This is my cousin Billy Stewart from Wash, DC. Billy was a Chess Recording artist in the 50's and 60's and was discovered by Bo Diddly, and his uncle Calvin (Hound Dog) Ruffin. Billy wrote and recording the 60's hits "Sitting In The Park" and this classic "I Do Love You". Billy died in 1970 when his vehicle plundged into the Neuce River in NC along with 3 of his band members. I am proud of my Family's Music History-Recording Artist Dane Riley

Billy Stewart is my favorite. And I'm an old white dude. It reminds of when I was a foreman in a machine shop in North Hollywood. I hung out at "The Palacio" which was a dangerous place back then for cavachos. A little hot married Mexican gal broke my heart and I never got over it. I did get my revenge on every woman I ever dated and married thanks to my Martha.

What a fabulous recording; a different session that made it to vinyl. Example of how incredible he was as a vocal artist. He could have given us 100 different recordings and every time it would have been solid gold. The background vocalists harmonized differently, and this one is much more like a "rehearsal" one-take. But he is so magnificent a singer, it's like a "final" take!! He always sings at the top of his lungs like he's sending it off into the distance to disappear out into the world.

Billy Stewart was such a unique talent that I would have loved to have seen how he developed as black music transitioned from the 60's to the 70's. Of course that sentiment applies to so many other artists who died in their prime during that period. What I like about this music is that it captures a spirit of joy that truly should be the possession of all of us. Yet so many of us can feel this only during the brief 3 minutes of this song.
