I have read this post before and laughed a little too - you can't tell wind speed simply by looking at the waves; the tide, wind direction and other factors affect wave action dramatically. Besides, if the anemometer was reading 25 knots he was probably in about 18-20 knot wind anyway since the speed would have been apparent wind and not actual wind speed. And I agree: sometimes its a hoot to have too much sail up and lean her over. I've been out in 35 knot winds and had a blast, reefed or no.
There are some very rude people on youtube, if they had the balls or the resources to get out sailing single handed maybe they would not feel the need to bad mouth others. That looks like you were having real fun. Nice video
Ok why would he lie about the wind speed and why would a sailor talk shit about another sailor because he is washing the windows and laughin his ass off even the most serious racers love to be way overpowered for fun. and whoever thinks they can tell wind speed by the water is a dumbass the water doesnt instantly start rolling the minute the wind builds. Besides he is spilling air out of the main big time and still draggin the rail. oh btw that boat has a keel not a board crew doesnt matter
Thanks man I have been there, the only question i have is with that lite of a boat and no counterbalast, why use your only spare hand to film it. ...?.... Oh well you got the shot and that makes the story worth telling. fair winds friend. D
Wow, years later and your still getting advice on how to sail!1 LOL. I dont care, it looks like a blast to me. Yeah, trim it out if your racing, reef it if your going somewhere specific, but everyonce in a while, pull in the sheets, and heel her on over just to do it!! Honestly, 35deg scares the crap out of me, but you got to try it at least once. BTW, nice fenders. LOL
Thanks Slopcurlew30, to be honest....I was not racing anyone and not going for performance.. 110 blades are for gales as far as I am concerned. As for control- she was perfect. I can bet you I was prob. going faster then most boats that size heeled at 15-20 degrees. I was taking her for a spin in the bay when no one else was out there....you need not take the fenders off-those details are for accountants with motor boats.
Fenders hanging over, no reefs in the main and if it were really 25+ you should have had a least one reef with a 110 or a blade. The rail wasn't wet, it was buried and you were overpowered. A reef or two and a small 100 jib would have given you an extra three knots and would have straightened her up more. Trim man, all sailors love trim. Cheers
Well, actually an old narrow waterlined boat (like a 6... witch is really old) can easilly take about 30 degrees of heel with no decrease of speed. Then in the other hand these modern wide afters can barely take 20 degrees without a huge lack of speed... A viking boat would have sunk if more than 10 degrees of heel. So the amount of heel u'r boat can take/ which is optimal for performance varies of the type of the boat you're sailing.
The SanJuan 24's are a great boat, huh? What a load of fun to get them out in a blow when the chop isn't too bad! Great video. Makes me wish it wasn't December!
Nice quarter tonner! It's a fine day in victoria when you get sun and wind. Just picked myself up a Farr 727. At any rate, hope to see you on the water!
For the last time- the fenders were positioned that way because I was rafted to another boat. Don't be offended, but I am well aware of fender etiquette.. i cant believe I am writing about fenders or that people actually take the time to complain about fenders.
Looks like fun, DavidSaac25! Nice sailing--thanks for posting the video. Yea, it's great to push a boat... I enjoy reading your counter-comments--witty! I have a Cape George 31 from across the Straits in Port Townsend. You can see similar videos of her sailing in the Open Atlantic at ModernGeographic. Have fun!
Did you know 35 degrees of heel is slow? Did you know that 35 degrees of heel makes the rudder ineffective? Just saying. Learn to sail right and you might learn to sail fast and safe. just a thought.
Wow! Thanks for the sage advice you 'old salt you! Where did you get these expert "thoughts" (this is where you insert: I have done transpac, or 25 yrs. experience, race committee, same old bull)or you must be a naval architect to pick up such technical gems. It's fun to push the boat hard now and then.. just a thought.
P.S. check out sailinganarchy on web(there is a great forum designed specifically for this type of bitching). Cheers,
k, i understand pushing the boat is fun but its a san juan 24, i have one and i live in penticton. most san juans are old and you probubly shouldnt be pushing them to the extreme. but when someone adds some simple advice for how to sail properly, you dont need to be a total asshole and shut him down. this is youtube. there are commments for a reason.
Thank you i am 23 years old and it feels good for someone to think im not an idiot sometimes

Perhaps that´s 25 knots Windspeed, ok . . . but never 25 knots trough the water !!
Tom461 4 years ago
No of course not--> wind speed. Though 6-8 knots on a sailboat feels faster than 25 knots on a motor boat.

Prefer the fishermans reefing, ease the traveller or mainsheet.. I generally reef when it gets nasty (usually on the dock).
