Excellent video! I always come back to watch this from time to time for inspiration.
I have a question, though. I was wondering how he was able to get his brushes to behave in the manner they do from around the 0:43 mark through the 0:57 mark in Painter. I'm currently messing in the brush creator to figure it out, but I'm having some difficulty. It looks as though the brushes are responding to rotation or pressure or something along those lines.
@Wilsty88 Under Shape Dynamics in your brushes window you can set Angle Jitter to "Direction" Try messing with that, it should get you there or close.
@Monstergoat66 late reply but yes, this is very hard to do. it takes an intense understanding of composition, color theory, and other fundamentals. it isn't as easy as grab shape A and place it next to shape B. This is years upon years of study at work with a medium that has no limits
you read into what I originally said waaaay too much.. I actually haven't said a single word here regarding my true thoughts on Andrew or any other form of art for that matter. You jumped the gun at at an alarming rate on this, but we all do that. And everyone goes through "creative lows", that's part of being an artist. There's no such thing as an artist who is on his game 100% of the time. Same as athletes, actors, and so on. Gotta work through it. And yeah I agree to disagree lol
Oh come on you know I love you. Do you really hate me that much? If you do, do you mind explaining to the rest of us how you actually hate an anonymous person that you never seen, heard or met?
Anyways, it's been fun watching you fly off the handle. You're great entertainment!!
No, I don't hate you. I don't hate anyone. I just happened to read your comment at a point where I was going through some creative lows. It's been real. Agree to disagree?P.s. I'm not Anrew Jones, but you really should look at some of his other work. It's pretty inspiring.
I was never mas to begin with. I just think your comment was beyond ignorant and you came off as a condescending ass hole. And I'm not your bud. You're clearly a moron.
it took 4 separate posts to wrote that jibberish? ha
what did you do, write one passage to me, then think about it, then come back and write the next 3?
let me level with you- I didn't read more than 10 words in any of that stuff you just wrote.. save yourself the headache and don't write more than a sentence or two because I have a tendency to just scan past the garbage lol..
but i'm sure what you wrote was important though, thanks!!
You really are stupid. YouTube only allows a certain amount of characters. Her's one sentence for you, You're a passive/agressive fuck that would shut your ignorant mouth in two seconds after being hit in it. (And i KNOW you read it, so don't lie. Someone with your ego wouldn't be able to help but to look at what others think of you. Now you're backpedalling because you realize what an aassinine fuck you are. Peace, you Canadian fuck.
tsk tsk we have some really angry people in this world lol
hey- on a scale of 1-10, what would you say your anger level is right now?
Do you realize you're getting mad at text on your computer screen on a site called youtube? Did you think about that? Cause all this is is text and words here.. you're reading words on a computer screen from an anonoymous person and your blood pressure is about to burst LOL

I Knew you didint have the balls to defend the shit you said. You're a pathetic wannabe who gets of on putting down legitiment artist.s. Further more I take grat offense when i see some begginer wanna be with an ego tear down those who have spent a life time inspiring others. The whole point of all of this is that you would do some more research into the artists that you have no problem tearing apart. (I'm guessing there'd be some major brown nosing if you ever meant any of them. amateur critcs suck ass and you definately fall in that category. Insult my intelligence again you bitch and see what happens. You're worhless.

I'm glad u don't like Andrew. His work is for the enlightened. Not the pre-maddona wanna-be's such as urself. u need to dissapear
I have no anger. If I met U in person I might drill u in the mouth to shut you up but I don't need to be angry to send a wanna be fuck wad pretend artist like you into next week. If you met Andrew ud kiss his as and then drive him crazy with questions. You're not origional. wow look at you go!!! it's fun getting you all wound up LOL !!! Either: A) you're a mentally ill person who's getting his panties in a knot over this issue here in cyberspace
B) You're actually Andrew Jones under a false name and I *really* offended you lol
which is it, A) or B) ?? My guess is B).
Hey, if I so much as *burp* does it set you on fire this easy too? LOL take a chill pill dude you're gonna give yourself a heart attack
Now thats more like it. Civil. Now we can talk. What are your thoughts on cloning an image in Corel Painter? You know, using the 'quick clone' feature and then brushing the strokes on the new cloned layer while it picks up the colours and image underneath it. What do you think about that? Can you clone a photo of a celebrity to the point where it looks like an oil painting and then say you 'painted' or 'drew' the final artwork? Just wondering.
You wanna show the size of your brain by discusing the symantics of the program? Did you see anything like what you're talking about in THE CLIP WE"RE DISCUSING? And thank you for letting me in on the secrets of the clone brush. I always wondered what the hell that thing was for. And why are you such a hypocrite that you would even use Painter and then so blatantly slam an artist for also using it?
On top of all that, I've never once heard Andrew arguing the points of his art on whether it's "painted" or "drawn". That's your issue. I think it's fucking lame to try to downplay how inspiring his work is based on the tools he uses. Are rulers out of the question, too? They're sort of like cheating. If you wanna talk shit about an artist to make yourself feel better, you should have picked one a little less proficient.
I only looked up this video to see some work from an artist I really like. I didn't know I'd be subjected to your "head up the ass" opinions on him or on art because I assumed most other people viewing it were ALSO FANS. Do you think Alex Grey "cheats" by taking DMT to conjure images? He's only "copying" the human form, right? So, being the purist painter you are, do you grind yours from pure pigment, or cheat and buy it from the store? (I'm guessing Arron Bros., if they have that in Canada.)
look closer- the shapes being added to the image are being brushed in and are from a clip art CD- did you listen to him? Rewind.. listen again.. just drag your cursor (yes, with your wacom) and the shape is painted in.. the shape is PRE DRAWN.. lol.. I use a wacom every day .. what he's doing is assembling PRE PRODUCED SHAPES.. watch it again.. there is nothing being drawn here regardless of the speed of the video..yes my little friend.. rewind... listen again... lol...
yes, but the root of the drawing, the 3d model created in Zbrush is his alone. It's not like he uses the shapes as is, U can see him warping and modifying and making lots of artistic decisions before placing them. You wouldn't call someone who uses Photoshop brushes a pseudo artist would you? But in fact this is nothing like that, because these Painter stencils give A.J. much more artistic control than PS brushes. It's like saying any programmer who uses a library isn't a real programmer.
You know what? It's just as vulgar for you to say that it's "cheating" as is my choice of vocabulary. You are correct though, I should have aimed my anger for your ignorance in a much more edited way. Look through Android's website at a more comprehensive collection of his work. If you still think he "cheats" then, hell, you'd make one hell of an art critc. Maybe you could get a job teaching art criticism at a junior college for short bus kids. See, no swearing.
I always used to look at digital fantasy art like this and wondered how in the world did this artist do this.. the detail level in the artwork was almost in-human.. now, watching this, I see that the shapes are 'brushed' on in seconds.. practically none of it is drawn at all lol.. I'd love to learn this software but I would feel like I was majorly cheating.. especially when someone asks me "you drew that!?".. what could I say.. "yes, I drew it" ?? I'd be lying, lol. I love it though
Are you fucking kidding me? You don't think he "drew" anything? Ever heard of Wacom? Or the digital pens they make? He uses one. You hold it just like a brush. The scenes are sped up, diphole. For people with short attention spans. What do you think, that these images just apeared out of space and all one has to do is point and click? You're trully a stupid person. I hope to hell you're not an "artist". Absolutely ignorant comment. I'm givin it thumbs down, and your head up your ass.
Well, next time maybe they'll think twice about leaving such a stupid one. I'm sure I wasn't the only artist offended by the implication that "prctically none of it is drawn at all" and that it's "cheating". Omg! Mine was only a reply! What's wrong with u?
@1flawed2u weak people attempt to disqualify things they can't do or understand by believing that a machine did the work for that person.
Anything other than putting the honus on themselves.
Ultimately though, art is largely a magic trick, so by showing such a specific strange and interesting process andrew jones does let the cat out of the bag to the layman. It is very useful for an artist though to see.
can i ask something? i got corel painter x. The zbrush is something new? i mean i got to download that brush cause i cant see Zbrush in my brushes :P.
I love Zbrush, personally I think it is easier to use than other 3d modeling tools because you dont just pull and move poly points, and vertices, you actually sculpt with brush, and you paint on your 3d model, none of that uvw mapping stuff, you can textures and color.
@macjsus Yeah, that's all well and good if you're just creating a 2D still image, but if you're planning on animating your character you really can't do it all in Zbrush. You'll need to know how to lay out UVs and push and pull points in a regular 3d package. Zbrush is great for adding details and generating the various maps and textures for your model.
Helps put the piece into perspective, was wondering how it was done, feel less blown away, but defiantly interesting to see the processes involved. Thanks for sharing.
Ok so what exactly did he do? He created the composition in Z-Brush by making a collage of ready made shapes and then coloured everything in Painter? Were those shapes already available or did he create them himself? I'm not really that familiar with Z-Brush I just heard it was a 3D programme. I'm probably wrong.
Z-Brush lets you compose fully rendered 3d models for use in illustration, animation - anything you can put your mind too. It comes with ready made human constructs or you can do what Android did and compose your own human/monster/vehicle/thing out of the various tools, shapes and effects available.
Its 3d modelling without the hassle of having to know advanced programming and maths.
I just spoke with a friend from college who's affiliated himself with the programme, he told me it was like sculpting. You can just pick points and extrude and mould them with alot less hassle than in 3D Max and other programmes. Is that true? It sounds like something I could get into, since I do enjoy modelling but hate the technical curve of 3D Max.
Yeh sculpting actually describes it pretty well. Like most new creative programmes it can be pretty frustrating to get to know but once you got it it can expand your work to no end.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Amazing at what? At putting shapes together!? Its a collage of shapes and colors. Its a short lived art cause its like those music programs like E-jay where u just throw some loops and rythm's together made by others...
I have an old computer running CS2 photoshop...I've got to get these new programs...so amazing

Fiddling with pre constructed shapes to decipher forms in your mind, to inspire and act as a launch pad for your own creativity, is hardly cheating.
The creation is still crafted with your mind, everyone can see different forms in the same cloud in the sky.
...but if you personally prefer to look at work where the artists, has worked tediously on tiny details then thats fine I guess.

WTF? Why does the painter X he's using has a square color wheel AND a triangular color wheel?
And those custom palettes aren't nothing I've ever seen before.
And yes some people are dick riding fanboys...

Amazing at what? At putting shapes together!? Its a collage of shapes and colors. Its a short lived art cause its like those music programs like E-jay where u just throw some loops and rythm's together made by others...
U guys in here are to easily impressed.
