  • Que contraste, del glamour a la terrible realidad marginal, indiferencia.

  • Contaminated water! there are 140 million people in Bangladesh, so according the the "US" doctor the entire population of Bangladesh are drinking containated water. Shawn when you were there did you drink mineral water or did you boiled the water.

  • Both. I know you may think it offends your impression of Bangladesh - but the fact is the quality of water isn't that great in this country. And blood tests don't lie - my iron poisoning dropped as soon as I left the country.

  • I don't know about you but I am from there and I never had any type of contamination from water because I always boiled the water. And in our village we had tubewell, and the water did smell iron. I am talking about Chittagong, but I think you were in the Northern part of the country where there is Arsenic poisoning.

  • Now that I am back in Dhaka, I am using a special nanotech-filter I got from Vestergaard-Frandsen. That is helping somewhat.

And you are right - I've noticed iron tasting water in both northern areas and in southern areas (like Barguna).

And just let me say this - that MUM brand mineral water? Completely bogus crap. I'll never touch that stuff again. People told me it was the safest way to go but I think it contributed a lot to my iron poisoning.

  • Is that special nanotech-filter affordable, then maybe your project can distribute it to the poorest of the poor part of the country. And I agree with you, MUM is crap, the owner of MUM is a millionaire (in terms of dollars) and he became that the "short cut way". Corrupted people like him are holding back the country from its progress. Thanks for getting back to me so soon. I like what you are doing.

  • well the thing is evry individual at different parts of the world are adapted to their environment... so we get less effects from the iron poisoning than shawn does... we can tolerate the heat that they wont be able to. u can compare these between the needy n us in BD. its like biological

  • yet the contamination have to be looked thru

the government looked thru the beverage companies for quality, the same way india did.. they may have improved, but upto how much u may never kno...

well anway, u shud buy imported drinks from supermarkets or sumthin

  • @igzibit - I'm not going to go around fighting poverty on one hand and drinking Evian water in the other. It's ridiculous the local water companies falsely claim their water is safe to drink when it contains high concentrations of heavy metals. Making sure local companies are held to account is a better solution than telling me to go around drinking imported drinks.

  • That's not exactly true igzibit. Iron isn't like a germ. Your immune system can (theortically) become biological immune to certain specific bacteria and viruses - but iron is a heavy metal. This is why iron and arsenic are known problems in Bangladesh. The effects of arsenic poisoning are well documented - but the effects of iron poisoning are less documented due to how the symptoms manifest itself.

  • Thanks ani19bd :) And, yeah, I don't trust MUM branded water anymore. I'm pretty sure they are the main culprit in my iron poisoning. I've avoided them since coming back and things are much much better thus far.

  • This is less a comment about the video (which I thought was good) and more a comment on the commentary. Two things occurred to me. First was there were many comments that regarded this as 'gods work'. While I believe this, people can also do good work and be agnostic or atheist. I've seen it. Second, the few brave hecklers could learn from leaving their home town for another country and experience life through a different cultural lens. Anyone that has the chance to live abroad should take it.

  • Hi damiont42 - completely agree with your comments :)

  • you have awesome taste in music!

  • Your work and video documentation is awesome!

I would like to contact Vestergaard Frandsen regarding a Global Unity Concert Series that bridges the Wealth and Awareness for Humanitarian Causes worldwide.

100% of ticket sales goes towards projects like yours.

What's your best contact info that we can talk more about it?

  • For there to be rich people there HAS to be poor people, its a sad but true imbalance of economics..

  • Shawn, your the man! Helping the people. I wished I could do something like what your doing! Keep it up.

  • It's always good to see someone getting out and doing something. Anything helps and it should not matter if the person is starving on the next block or the next continent. I feel sorry for the people who think they are too good to help.

  • hey khruit, a lot of these people get no help at all... so they die. So much for your quaint saying.

  • so are you telling me people who were once refugees or lived in desolate conditions are better off without help?

not exactly what my once refugee parents who are now business owners with 5 college educated and successful kids would say.

but i guess apathy is what some people choose to be in life...sad

  • your a fuk wit

  • Pretty sad that all those people are just laying on the street

  • If this guy is trying to improve the lives of people who live in bad conditions then he should get all the support he can. Especially since most of us aren't will to do what he does.

  • Fucking PointNerv doesnt fucking start accusing people of shit.

  • you dumb shit he doesnt put the fucking ads there asshole. its youtube. so shut the fuck up, they arent in the video.

  • youtube asks the channel owner permission to put adds up, Get your vag piercing cleaned before that FUNGUS takes over your peanut brain

  • hey PointNerv - here's the deal. 1) I didn't go on vacation, I went specifically to help people. See related videos from my channel for more info. 2) I have enabled ads in this video in the hopes of (maybe one day) helping to cover the costs associated with this work. But even with all these ads, I have yet to cover even 1/10th of my travel costs - let alone costs associated with the resources and help I've been able to provide. Oh and all these medical problems? I pay out of my own pocket.

  • @SouthFacedWindows - I'm not. Any money I have earned from banner ads or whatever haven't even covered the cost of my first plane ticket to Bangladesh - let alone the cost of all the materials, supplies, and resources I've provided...

  • Thanks for ur work 2. U are an inspiration to youths all around the world.

  • stop showing off about ur good work. JUST DO IT- by NIKE

  • hey bahabdoulaye - this isn't *MY* good work. It's the good work of all those who have supported me. These videos are my way of connecting those who are a part of this to the impact they are having on the ground.

It could be a donation, it could be voting on what I do, or it could be lending support in a dozen other ways.

It's only when you realize that will you see it's not showing off - it's sharing with a community :)

  • Oh by the way bahabdoulaye - I just checked out your video on African stereotypes. I completely agree with you. Africa is often portrayed in the media is a desolate place full of poverty and suffering. It's true - Africa does have many challenges with extreme poverty, but it is also a place with development, progress, and a growing middle class.

In fact, I found some parts of rural Kenya to be MORE developed than any part of rural Bangladesh...

  • Thanks for educating me about ur project. sorry for the bad "showing off" term i used. As for the video, am glad u watched it. U no africa is rich but africans are definitely poor (a healthy majority). so i don deny dat. but people here and the media have used bad images depicting africa in the worst manner in order to get donations or something out of the American public. this has made it harder for an african to be proud of Africa. dats why am making such video to educate people about True AFR

  • hey bahabdoulaye - we're on the EXACT same page. I *hate* how charities show pictures of crying, poor (usually African) children with sad music in the background. Why? They want you to pity them, feel guilty, and send them a donation.

Portraying the poor like that is a huge insult and a disservice to truly ending poverty.

  • Yup u GOT IT!! well said. thanks.

  • Hey friend, I don't know whats up with the scoffers. I hope your work is helpful to those in need. Much support to you.

  • Fuck, I love the part where optimus prime bitchslaps godzillas, with the puppies on fire.

I got bored. Made my own video up in my head. Shit was SO cash.

  • That actually sounds better than Micheal Bay's version of Transformers....

  • Tear drop...Tear drop...Sob...Sob...Things Like This Are Everywhere...Even in the US...Ive seen worse...these people have it good compared to what ive seen...I dont understand so horribly sad about that...And I also dont uderstand why whatever you did was sooo good..what exactly did you do...anybody can travel somewhere and tape a poor person...But i didnt see you help them any...

  • This comment is an epic fail. So much so I had to screenshot it for posterity:

    twitpic(dot)com/x9dh/full

  • wow! Ur cool!

  • Great video keep up the good work. I am puting this video in my favorite

  • Who wants 2 B my 82nd Sub today?

  • Great video... nice comparisons... expressions of extremes of life.

  • I'm a bit of a giver, if you consider genital warts a gift! MWAHAHAHA!!!

  • Now THAT'S a gift that keeps on giving! Thanks for the lol :)

  • congratulations and good luck on this project =)

  • What you see is what you get :(

  • Good Luck!!

  • I commend you for your desire to do this project. this is Gods good work as well as human beings. We are all children of God.

  • wats da name of da song being played?

  • "Nonsense" by The Rest. Link in the sidebar :)

  • Muy chevre el video, super bacano como mostras los radicalismos entre las personas muy ricas y las mas pobres

  • Great Video!

I hope you have more to come, I have subscribed incase you do!

  • Thanks for subscribing :) There are already two newer videos since this one if you're interested. Plus there are tons of oldies :)

  • Buen trabajo Amigo!

  • that was so nice

  • Thanks for being so polite. While there is definitely poverty in America - Americans have access to clean water at every faucet, every baby born is given free basic immunizations, and even if schools are underfunded and staffed - they still have a place to get an education.

There is a reason poverty in that part of the world is called "extreme poverty".

  • I so admire what you are doing, but I hope you will give serious consideration to the water issue your doctor brought up. You won't be able to help others if your liver fails.

  • يارب سترك

  • people like you make this world a place worth living in.

  • i know americans are always the ones saying that they support the troops and all, we don't have that type of culture over here in Holland but I'm considering you to be in the front lines of the war against world suck. You are a very special individual, the best of luck on all your endeavors.

  • it's just overwhelming when you see your footage, the difference is sickening

  • you are awesome

  • great video

  • Oh my God, I'm so sorry that it's taken me so long to see this!! I hope you're ok Shawn! I respect and admire you so much.

  • You are truly amazing!

  • The world is so unbalanced, when you live your everyday life in peace. You forget how unsettling times without such security can seem.

    Stay safe Bro.

  • you are si nuce. keep up the good work. you are really doing the world some good. this is really nice of you

  • You are living my dream. You are my hero. Thank you so much for doing all that you do. Thank you so much. You are an inspiration.

  • what was the song you used in this?

  • "Nonsense" by "The Rest" - its a legal free download under the Creative Commons :)

  • seriously man don't kill yourself, we all think what your diog is great.

i nearly cryed watching all your clips man

    Great job

  • truly inspiring as always -- get well shawn and keep up the amazing work :-)

can't wait to see your new vids from kenya!

  • Did you see my video about water filtering in Kenya?

  • Excellent job! You r a super hero!

  • Great Job, respect for ya.

  • don't kill yourself dude. how bad is your iron poisoning?

  • My parents think I'm not taking it seriously enough. My feeling is that there are 150 million people in Bangladesh and they drink the same water.

But, the doctor in this video did warn that iron poisoning/overload can lead to heart, liver, and kidney failure. I came back from Bangladesh with an iron level of 812. The charts doctors use only go up to 300 and even that is considered "excessive".

  • True, but what is the life expectancy and general health of those 150 million people? Please don't take all of our pushing the wrong way. We are all so in love with you and your project and would hate to see you get seriously ill. Besides, how will you be able to help if you're liver fails? What you do is one of the most inspiring things I've ever seen, but please try to balance your health with it.

  • Keep up the good job,You make the difference in our world.

  • You rock, bro. DFTBA!

  • What you have done so far is something so great. I hope one day you are able to go back & continue.

All the best to you xx

  • I'm sorry to hear that you are sick. You are so brave for continuing. Please take care of yourself!!

    -Sylvia

  • yes if you don't help yourself you can't help them!

  • great video,thanks!

  • Please let us know what we can do to help. You have an ally in South Korea. Peace and Love

    EPIK JUSTINO

  • The work you do is AMAZING! we need more people like you!

  • Earn some money for yourself and your family. Then go back.

Make sure your safe, you wonderful man.

    ben.

  • Keep fighting the good fight.

  • you are so amazing. <3

  • This video is great. You an inspiration to me, the other nerdfighters, and the world.

    -Francis

  • You know we'll all be here routing you on no matter what...

  • Take care of yourself first. I believe that you have a true calling, but you can't continue your work if you get really sick. I'll support you as much as I can. I've watched you from the start and you've touched my heart. Thank You.

  • I'm sorry to hear about the iron poisoning. You are very brave, you know. I'll talk with some of our students about water purification projects and share this vid with them for inspiration.

  • Amazing. This video made me cry.

I respect you in every way for everything that you are doing. Your an inspiration to everyone.

I really do hope that you do not have iron poisoning and that if you do, you will get better. Thanks for everything.

-your 14 yr old Canadian supporter-

  • Get well soon. Thank you for helping out my country. Balo Tako.

  • the kind of work you are doing is what i wish i could do. good luck to you!

  • you are a truly amazing person. this video was so inspiring and i am in awe of you and this whole project.

  • you're just awe inspiring, and you make me feel ever so humble. i'll donate, give what i can and do what i can now because of you, you have changed a lot of lives over seas and here in America.

  • Get better soon man.

  • hey bro, sorry about your iron poisoning. It's just sad how people are over there and when i look at my peers drinking smoking weed and all those things it just anger me, they donot care for their lives why can't they switch all those lives for people who want them.

you may not be known much, you risk your life for others, in all people do not care what you do.

theres one thing every night you go to sleep and pray to God you don't feel stupid you feel and know that you are a great person!!

  • You do such great work, but remember that you are allowed to think about your own health too. Stay safe.

  • Can't wait to see where this all leads.

  • I'm so proud of you, even though we don't know each other. I love the juxtaposition of excess and poverty, it's very very effective.

    Kudos, and safe journey.

    ~Trav

  • Shawn, I'm sorry to hear about your possible iron poisoning and it makes your decision to go back that much more inspiring. I'm excited to hear that you will be expanding your project to Kenya and cannot wait to follow your journey there as well. You have helped to remind me, and so many others on youtube, that a small deed can make a huge difference. Thank you. Thank you so much.

  • holy crap man.

I've been subscribed to you for at least half a year now, and I must say, this is the video that really made me cry.

I'm sorry about your iron poisoning, but I think going back to Bangladesh was the right thing to do. I'd love to do what you're doing with your life, but right now I'm in no stable situation to go.

goddamitt, I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm really jealous of what you've done. You've made people aware just how fucking lucky they are.

    GOD BLESS YOU

  • Ya the ad is still there on my screen after the video...Meet bengali girls now...muslins4marriage I dont know what link you need tho to block it

  • Should be gone in a few hours. If anymore ads bug you - there should be an X or close button right on the ad itself.

I enabled ads because I do this project full time and YouTube and Adsense are my only sources of income. It's not much - I haven't touched a penny because of that. But you never know what the future holds.

  • And yeah I finally saw that particular ad. It wasn't at all appropriate. Thanks for bringing it to my attention :)

  • Idk how you always seem to make me get goosebumps or even shed a tear once in a while.. but you do it.. its just a realiziation of how lucky i am.. and how much everyone takes for granted (including myself)

    Thank you.(:

  • the scene u show in bagladesh just keep me thinking bout manipal,india...place where i studied before....the 1st time i resides there i constipated bout 1 weeks....can u believe that???

  • Shawn you are amazing and inspiring. This video really showed the injustice of a world that is divided by classes and inequality.

Keep us updated. I would especially like to know when you'll come to Kenya because I'm going soon to volunteer near by in Uganda.

    Good luck :)

  • Yeah I don't control the ads - Google does. I can block certain things I don't agree with - but I have to know the URL of it first...

  • If it shows up again - please do let me know what the URL listed in the ad is (not where the ad leads to) so I can make sure it doesn't show up ever again.

  • There's a "meet bangladeshi girls" advert? Do you have the URL so I can block it?

I can only see PBS ads on my end...

  • "...to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you lived; this is to have succeeded." Ralph Waldo Emerson

This is just an excerpt from a quote which i think describes what you do perfectly. You are an inspiration to us all. Thank you

  • its awesome that your continuing to help the people who need it, but take some time to recover as well, i think kahlil gibran said something about even the vine must take from the earth so that it can give its fruits. or someting to that effect. basically i'm saying that make sure your in good condition to help, because if your going to help alot of people like i think you are your going to need your strength to do it. as always your a true hero man, what your doing is amazing

  • I cannot even begin to explain how amazing you and others who do this are. I don't have any money to donate and I don't exactly belive in the power of prayer but i want you to know that you will always have me looking to you as a great person and I wish you well on your trip to Kenya.

    Jeff

  • I've said this before... but what you do is amazing... and I never knew you sacrificed so much...

  • I appreciate the work that you are doing, and happy that you aren't giving on the people who needs help. May God Blessed you and the people around you, and those you touch.

  • Congratulations on completing the Bangladesh project an dmoving onto Kenya! :D

Youhave inspired me do something similar for my Senior Project (I want to go to China).

    How do I get started?

  • I literally bought a camcorder, packed my bags, grabbed my laptop, and flew to Bangladesh. That's one of the reasons the project is called "uncultured" :)

  • ami asha cori ami Bangladesh jabo

  • i had the same experience when i came home from india. i had to stay in my room for a weekend cuz it felt too weird to be in such a wealthy environment

  • Shawn. That is so awesome that you aren't giving up. Like, that is really noble. Thanks so much for all the work you are doing.

P.S. Where did you get that YouTube jacket.

    DFTBA

  • It was a gift from YouTube - they had sent it to my home address when I was in Bangladesh. I was only able to start wearing it after I returned home.

Thanks for the kind words Eric :)

  • Shawn, allow us to help you take care of yourself. We know it's hard for you to use your life savings to help others, but there is no need to be so humble. Please set up a small fund for your personal/health expenses, so that our donations to your project are not in vain; especially if we cannot even sustain the man making it happen. You are there to represent the goodness in all of our human hearts, in an area where we many of us cannot give up our current lives to do so. Thank you.

  • Great video make you think about how good you have it and you shouldn't complain cause some people have it way worse than you do.

  • you are awesome!! good luck. some day I hope to do what you do. just gotta finish school...

  • Absolutely astounding. Your compassion for people is awesome.

  • i hope your liver can take everything.

and you know - when all else fails your huge gimongo heart can take up the slack.

    corny puns anyone?

    anyone at all?

    aw...

  • You are an inspiration(:

  • Good Luck on your adventure! Support from New York City

  • Does that straw you showed me at the Plano TdN remove iron or just other contaminants - I am glad this project is continuing and I hope you get better.

  • It's a microbiological filter - it only removes dirt and biological stuff. It doesn't remove stuff dissolved in the water. So you can't use it to drink iron-heavy water, arsenic-laced water, or any other dangerous metals.

  • Oh that is kind of disappointing - but at least it gets rid of the dirt and biological toxins. When is it that you go to Kenya?

  • i wish that there were more people like you.

  • glad you're trip was a safe one. take care of yourself, though. you're doing important work, and you're health is important too, so keep an eye on yourself so you can keep doing that work.

  • inspirational. this is the type of thing we all want to do and always put off.

  • All luck to you

All peace to where you are

  • OMG I hope you'll be okay. I really admire you integrity for sticking with it and continue to help people out. GOOD LUCK XD!!!!

  • OMG you are amazing. I am so touched that you have done these great things and have helped so many. Thank you for all you have done.

  • Seeing those kids makes me want to cry...

  • Your so awesome!

  • Keep it up man.

  • I think what you're doing is amazing.

  • Great! hope everything turns out well soon.

  • Kenya? That sounds familiar! ^_^ *coughobama*

  • you are awesome!!! today i donated some money for this kid in my school who has cancer and it felt so wonderful to help.

  • Amazing to see the two worlds shown side by side. It really makes you think about how some people so little and others so much. Although I would consider myself middle class I am truly rich comparing to third world. I am so glad to be born in Canada, but because of your great work it inspires me to give, especially at this time of year.

Thank You, you truly are an inspiration.

  • I've been blessed to know you. You are one of the most giving and generous people I've met on the web. Bless your heart.

  • You are just an AMAZING, LOVING, CARING, person! It is so shocking to look at the difference between the two world. I can't even fathom how you felt. Keep up the good work and it is Spreading on You Tube, which is so important.

  • i love everything your doing, its great to see that a few people still care! ill talk to my youth group about donating to your great cause : ) thanks!!!

  • Thanks! But I gotta stress that if you convince your friends to subscribe to the channel, rate some of the videos, and join the facebook group - that would be just as (if not more) important! The more momentum this project the bigger the impact we can all have :)

  • okay! ill have everyone do that too! thanks again! : )

  • Awesome dude... i thank you from everyone!

  • AMAZING! My dad and I donated last week through John and Hank's tour.

  • Perfect! Because I didn't even have to touch the money on that one - it went straight to the organization (Save the Children USA) I had teamed up with for my video called Challenge Poverty.

  • Love your channel!!
