does the son die no matter what? as that scene is obviously in the beginning and i wasn't too aware of the controls yet, i tried to run off when the clown was saying that i didn't pay him yet, but accidentally stayed there and paid him. has anyone not paid him and saved the son? made for a more interesting story for the son to die, but i was just wondering.

I think this happens no matter what as it is one of the foundations the story is built off of. As you seem to have played past this part, you know what happens right after, the next scene.
