Love it! Life is short so I'm going to watch all the episodes and like the Sopranos I'll wait till the next season comes around. GREAT SHOW! Thanks to Netflix for bringing it to the US.
I have Seen a few episodes and it seems like a great show, but listening to the Norwegians in the series speaking English with the stereotypical Norwegian-English accent makes it hard to watch. Especially when you know (most of) the Norwegian actors can speak better English but choose to speak this way for comical effect. (and I'm a Norwegian btw, yay, woopdidoo and whatnot.)
Finally something to watch. They could have easily done this sort of thing after the Sopranos, but they chose not to. It could have been a spin-off of some sort and done well.
By being this much harmless and non-intimidating they can end up being the extreme opposite: scary for being too perfect to be true – and this show really puts an effort into saying that even though many things in this country seem to work almost flawlessly, “not everything is what it looks to be” (norwegians can still be imperfect humans after all – well, every once in awhile, at least.) :)
I’ve visited many countries before and none are quite as intimidating as the scandinavian countries (I’ve also visited Stockholm/Swe). They look like socially, economically ,politically and genetically perfect countries. As if they were the “chosen ones”, a sort of naturally conceived “elite” by natural right.
By being so much virtuous, pacific, beautiful, with almost no crime to speak of, highly tolerant, polite, with such a great educational system, non-corrupt, so proud of itself and so full of perfect girls everywhere like that (girls with flawless “gold-like” skin, as if they’ve just been out of a sunny beach all day long! – with perfect skin and hair conditions on top of that!).
This show is interesting for many different reasons. It's really able to catch a glimpse of what the norwegian society is like (despite some exagerations for some obvious comic value, of course). Norway is certainly a very curious country (I went there on vacation some years ago). I’d say it’s a little... “intimidating”... just for being virtually perfect in almost every way, you know? It’s a welfare state where everything happens almost idealistically on a regular basis.
does anybody know what the song is called in the intro, the one that starts playing when the train comes out of the tunnel ... sounds like traditional Norwegian music but I really like it! can't find any info about any of the music in the series though :/
@EnvelTheTrader who cares? its the world we live in its easy to make assumptions about a group of u hear about on tv all the time. if u are going to quit a show over that then maybe u should grow a thicker skin
@EnvelTheTrader they are not educated? They are smart and joke about stupid stereotypes, I think this show is mainly made for norwegians, but they tried to mix in taliban sterotype jokes for the USA (not a secret that USA has bin obsessed about taliban last 10 years) Only thing that i dont like about the series is that they mix english and norwegian 50/50 in every sentence, like giovanni understand norwegian after 5min..lol
@DinSokk i dont know see i hate that they need stuff like that to try and make the show better. when the show is good as is. i dont know i dont care after that joke im not watching it anymore, plus giovanni said it in a serious note he didnt joke with it thats what ruined it.
@DinSokk ruined the character to me. i looked at him as an smart and educated man. and that sin came i quickly turned off the show and didnt go back to it.
@EnvelTheTrader Maybe you should give it a try? If you really cared you would understand WHY this is part of the story, and you do not know how it ends, or what? Frank's response is built on the stigmatization of women. In fact, the point of view are suspicions against the Muslim from the police's side. You must see the setting in its entirety.Don't be so fanatical that the good points disappear from you.Well,it's up to you to choose to only see racism in this, devoid of objectivity.
@EnvelTheTrader hmm ... if it is not you who are so anti-anything that looks like the anti-Muslim, that your own view is actually considered to be stigmatizing.
@zorin333 that is true the guy couldve said it in a nice way, he couldve said "sorry, touching woman is a sin" so i agree with that BUT problem is the writers wanted to portray him as an asshole, which gives off a negative view about muslims.

Always thought Steven wasn't given enough screen time in the Sopranos so will be interesting to see how he fares in a leading role. Heard the BBC have bought the rights to this here in the UK so I can't wait to check it out.
@JoeAck83 In the USA, Netflix bought the rights, and it is now (as of Feb. 6) being offered on their website as a 'Netflix Original Series' (an online "watch instantly" deal, not on DVD -- yet.) I've already watched the first two of the eight Season 1 episodes, and the show is of course being renewed for Season 2. Hilarious show. So, why am I telling you all this? Well, I also read somewhere that it is being released, one way or the other, in the UK on the same date. So I hope you get to see it.
@brucenator Thanks, I most certainly will see it, very excited about it. BBC 4 are definitely going to air it, I guess after it's finished its run in Norway. There has been no commercials for it, so I think it will be sometime in March/April before it is shown in the UK. I like the premise and think it's a clever idea to put an American in an unfamiliar setting. It should do well outside of Norway, where I've read it's been a huge ratings success!
Great series! One of the best and funniest series I have seen in a long time – the meeting between the american culture and the norwegian culture, and the difficulties that comes with the two very different cultures meeting, really made my day. Extremely funny, yet very intriguing and exiting. 9/10 from me.
@hovslageren I've been commenting on this show all over the place. Such a great and funny show. Thanks to Netflix, who bought the rights to the show in the US (good move on their part) all eight episodes are available to watch online right now (with subtitles) on the Netflix web site. I just watched the first two episodes last night. I want to savor it, so now I'll probably just watch one episode a week over the next six weeks, as if I were watching it on Norwegian TV.
we're a small country. it's a good production. yes, the comments are a bit overzealous when it comes to expressing pride. having lived in quite a few corners of the world i am mostly shocked but not surprised (oxymoron, i know) how we bring each other down and rant at each other. in all levels of our society you find this mentality and it makes me nasious. don't be an ass about it, but there's nothing wrong in expressing pride. Norway <3 USA <3 f!"#¤% all you haters.
@mwohano yeah, I don't quite get all the hater comments that come out of my country, either. I'm just so glad it's already available (as of Feb. 6) in the US (with subtitles) via Netflix after only two episodes have aired in Norway, as I understand it. Thank-you Norway for producing such a good, funny show, and thanks to Netflix for buying the rights! This is THE best new show around.
@dunnudoit Du tror ikkje at du kanskje kunne holde tebake di derre nasjonalistiske tendensan..
3P1C SERIE! I love Lilyhammer, best series ever! Can't wait til' next wednesday when the next episode airs on NRK's net-TV! Already seen episode 1 and 2 twice!
As a norwegian I want to use this opportunity to thank America for the cultural exchange between our countries. We give you "Lilyhammer" and you give us Youtube and Youporn.
@dunnudoit Hell YEAH! Amrikaner'n Steven ga oss en jævla god hovedperson i den dritfete serien her ass! Det var ikke bare NRK som ga noe her, Frankie the Fixer er jo som pedo-Johansen i serien sier: "Rosinen i pølsa."
Thanks so much for the heads up! I live on the east coast of the USA and Norway is my dream for some reason. I enjoy learning all I can about Norwegian way of life. Whats funny is I used to see Steven Van Zandt often wondering around New York City..so this is kind of a synchronicity for me. Hope to visit the Lofoten Islands in the near future..especially Au... wish me luck and best wishes for you and yours
@1gustavia just so you know, the way this show portaits Norwegians as blonde sheep head eating people that ski everywhere they go while wearing funny sweaters is just as true as someone saying that all Americans are obese McDonalds eating lazy stupid fat asses who never leaves the car. It does not show common norwegian way of life, but the stereotypical norwegian way of life :-)
@monequu Really? I thought all Norwegian lensmannen were women who dropped their "dinner" on the sidewalk. (Joking!) I assume you caught the Johnny Fontane reference in that scene. I about died. That's one of my favorite scenes from the first episode.
Actually it's funny you mention that. I recently talked to someone from Turkey who actually thought that Desperate Housewives was somehow a realistic representation of America. Give me a break! It's a TV show! Even our "reality" shows are fake!
Men homo norvegicus minus. Deal w/ it.
This is a NORWEGIAN production, not a Netfix production. Netfix has only bought the rights to show the series in the USA after the series were made and ready to premiere in Norway. Netfix has no involvment in the idea, production or otherwise. Nor has any other American broadcaster or production company. Do you guys really think that the large American TV production corporations would invest and produce a TV series in Norway with so much Norwegian language and local people and culture in it ?
@Cta2006 oh so that's that's why they picked (and payed) fckn STEVEN V ZANDT for the leading role and not an Norwegian actor? one episode is rumoured to have costed around half a million dollar. I am sure some independent Norwegian film company came up with that. why not be happy that your beautiful country gets the exposure? netflix are not the bad guys.
@harddayslongnights half a million dollars is not that much money in Norway :-) Steven was asked by the Norwegian production team if he was interested, simply because he has a long with Norway through his many years touring in Norway. Steven has in the last 5 years taken a serious interest in various Norwegian music artists (he has his own radishow in the US where he introduces new and interesting bands). When approached and asked, he apparently was'nt to hard to convince.
@harddayslongnights if you read the Lilyhammer article/review from the NY Times, it clearly states that this is not made by Netflix, but by Norwegian producers, for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, primarily for Norwegian viewers. They chose Steven because he fit the role as an Italian mafia boss from AMERICA much more than any Norwegian actor would do. Just like George Clooney, who recently did a commercial for a Norwegian bank. If you have cash you can get any actor. Simple as that.
@monequu I also got my information also out of the press, from an interview that was done with Steven van Zandt. But at the end of the day - the show looks great no matter who did it. and I do love Norway so cheers for that.
I guess those (PR) journos should maybe get their story right.
@harddayslongnights It is a Norwegian-American cooperation and Steven Van Zandt was given full artistic freedom. He had influence in both script and production. It all started in Norway but you are right that he has a big hand in the final product. We Norwegians have been informed about this project in more than one year. There are not many TV shows produced in Norway. When a star like Steven Van Zandt will join in a TV series,it's hard not to grasp the details of the production:p
I freaking love this series! Last night the second episode aired in Norway and more than 1 million people saw it! Very high ratings considering only 5 million people live here. Hope the US, Canada and Latin America will enjoy this series as much as we are! :)

NO ONE GIVES A SHIT IF YOUR FROM NORWAY
Wasn't aware that this was being shown outside of Norway, can't really imagine it being all that funny without being at least somewhat familiar with Norwegian culture
@Ethermalol Its like the movie Borat, you dont have to be familiar with Kazakhstan to understand the humor in that movie,it's all turned up a notch to make it more funny :)
Sorry aboute my english im Norwegian.
And to all my fellow Norwegian countrymen writing "Norway<3" it's kind of gay and ......... Well GAY!
@Ethermalol@Ostebrix This is the best new show that is out! Really funny and great writing! It is now available in America (as of Feb 6) on the DVD rental website Netflix as a 'Netflix Original Series' (only for online "instant view," not available for DVD rental -- yet).
Ostebrix: It must have been really exciting to get to play an extra in such a great new series. I've watched the first two episodes so far, and I spotted you in the first couple of minutes of the 2nd episode. CONGRATULATIONS!

I LOVE Lilyhammer. I have seen the two first episodes on Norwegian Broadcasting and they are just hilarious :)

Norway <3 USA <3 f!"#¤% all you haters.
mwohano 1 month ago
@mwohano yeah, I don't quite get all the hater comments that come out of my country, either. I'm just so glad it's already available (as of Feb. 6) in the US (with subtitles) via Netflix after only two episodes have aired in Norway, as I understand it. Thank-you Norway for producing such a good, funny show, and thanks to Netflix for buying the rights! This is THE best new show around.

It does not show common norwegian way of life, but the stereotypical norwegian way of life :-)
monequu 1 month ago

I am sure some independent Norwegian film company came up with that. why not be happy that your beautiful country gets the exposure? netflix are not the bad guys.
harddayslongnights 1 month ago
@harddayslongnights half a million dollars is not that much money in Norway :-) Steven was asked by the Norwegian production team if he was interested, simply because he has a long with Norway through his many years touring in Norway. Steven has in the last 5 years taken a serious interest in various Norwegian music artists (he has his own radishow in the US where he introduces new and interesting bands). When approached and asked, he apparently was'nt to hard to convince.
Cta2006 1 month ago
@harddayslongnights if you read the Lilyhammer article/review from the NY Times, it clearly states that this is not made by Netflix, but by Norwegian producers, for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, primarily for Norwegian viewers. They chose Steven because he fit the role as an Italian mafia boss from AMERICA much more than any Norwegian actor would do. Just like George Clooney, who recently did a commercial for a Norwegian bank. If you have cash you can get any actor. Simple as that.
monequu 1 month ago 39
@monequu I also got my information also out of the press, from an interview that was done with Steven van Zandt. But at the end of the day - the show looks great no matter who did it. and I do love Norway so cheers for that.
I guess those (PR) journos should maybe get their story right.
harddayslongnights 1 month ago

Ostebrix: It must have been really exciting to get to play an extra in such a great new series. I've watched the first two episodes so far, and I spotted you in the first couple of minutes of the 2nd episode. CONGRATULATIONS!
