There's Italian Genesis fans, and then there's the rest of us. Italy caught onto Genesis more than any other country, and they were justly rewarded with a totally free concert on the band's last tour in 2002. Viva Italia and thankyou for this wonderful upload :)
Phil was better with these kinds of lyrics vs. the later stuff that was just repetitive and nonsensical -- like Paperlate or Sudio or Take me Home or Edge of Night. Definitely a great drummer.
I would call this song the tipping point. It has the gated drums, Famous Phil style of lyrics, and a fairly complex drumming, It's a shame it wasn't released to the radio at that time. It would have done very well. I still think it would... thank goodness it appeared on three sides live, One of the most hidden Gems..
One of the obscure but really endearing songs that Genesis put out. I just absolutely love this song's winsomeness. You could get really nostalgic with this song (1983 was the release year.)
@ProDigit80 easy on, fella. Shock news: Phil Collins is a soulful singer PAR excellence... and yes, even better than the uptight Gabriel, at singing the entire genesis ouevre. Oh, know it.
@fulcrum300 I just don't like the sound of his voice! It's a little thin, and I'm sure many would agree if these songs where done by a better sounding voice, it'd be a better song.
@oldfatbubba No way, there are PLENTY of worse Genesis songs than Whodunnit. Alone Tonight, Illegal Alien, Silver Rainbow, Invisible Touch, In Too Deep, Anything She Does, Throwing It All Away, I'd Rather Be You, Jesus He Knows Me, I Can't Dance, Never a Time, Way of the World, Since I Lost You, Hearts On Fire...and pretty much everything on CAS, save maybe 2 or 3 songs.
@Thekouder1 No doubt. I didn't mention it as I placed myself in the Collins era. I was really surprised when I first heard TA on some bootleg and wondered why the band never included it on an official album. I suppose
it must have been a difficult decision though we, as music fans, may have different ideas about the choices made by artists when defining an album track list and being limited by vinyl records capacity back then.
@tubellarbells When bands are in their first few years of touring, they simply can't afford to make a studio recording of every song they play on stage. Studio time is expensive. So, certain songs have to get cut if the band feels they don't fit well on an album. I guess this is how Genesis felt about Twilight Alehouse, so they eventually recorded it for a B-side.
Why didnt mention it The Day the Light Went Out as one if the best side-b records??

Probably the most underrated Genesis song of all time. One of my fave Genesis song post Gabriel era. Unfortunately, the least known, no video, no known concert/live cover by the band in their concert (it's only a supplement in the original Three Sides Live casette US version). The balance of instruments and Phil's drumming are awesome. The music catches the lyrics emotion perfectly. For the band/member of the band, please release the concert/live/video version of the song (if exist).
What I mean to say is that it seems stupid to me that you post a comment that refers to things outside of the scope of this page. I think most people coming here to listen to this song have no interest in what you're talking about. Here's the scope of the subject matter of this page in relation to the subject matter of your post:
song(You Might Recall)->version->album->band as a whole->individual member (Phil Collins)->personal life
along with Inside and Out, two great songs that it is criminal that never made a album. Loved this when it came out and couldnt believe that Paperlate got more airplay - always makes me think of a certain person in my life , the genius of music that can evoke memories 25 years on! Drumming on this is PC at his best
But have to say, as for Me and Virgil - what was that all about??
@Pookatube Like it or not! PC at the end of a another relationship song- very poignant though. Played it a few shows live and then dropped it. Underrated song tucked away at the end of abacab.
Agree with your comment re Rush - anither great band, who produce amazing music - looking forward to Uk tour 2011!!!
Sounds a bit Phil Collinsy to me. Comercialisation was obviously biting at this point. Sounds post Duke, which is a bad thing. Abacab sucked it's own turds.

Great song that should've been on Abacab. Phil's vocals & drumming here are top notch. Very catchy melody as well. One of the best post-prog songs they did.
Yes son! Forget your RAP and HOUSE bullshit!
This is prog, it was the CLIMAX of MUSIC in the 20. Century

@TheNorthBerliner
No. This song is intelligent pop, not prog.
The group could have pushed for its inclusion but decided not to.
It's on them, the crass idiots that they had become, that the song had was buried.
Praise the tune. Condemn the band's decision.

And though I know you couldn't care, you oughtta

In love and harmony, all of our lives?
