Glad to see the comments with @dsbtalal. I'm trying to do the same thing, set up a file server with network shares, and that's all. I didn't know if I was on the right track with Ubuntu Server. I already installed it but now I will take a look at freenas instead. Thanks for the great post and this time it's the comments that helped!

@dxbtalal Sure I'll send u a PM with my AIM. So from what you're saying I gather you just want a shared folder anyone can access. So no access restrictions or anything?
@maximum988 Maybe you can help me - i'm a Linux virgin. I want to build my own NAS. I want to use it to rip blu rays, reencode them, be able to stream them to a media player, download torrents, administrate files (Like uploading CAD files, and show them to clients - with user accounts that only permits reading specific folders for clients)
Any advices on what to use and how to install? - Sorry for noob questions, but i want to get started soon and learn about Linux.
@caseywtw The FTP server I used was called ProFTPd you install it by "sudo apt-get install proftpd" configuration is text file based but I wouldn't be surprised if someone wrote a web interface for it.
Dude I just installed ubuntu 10.04 today and when I rebooted my pc I was bought to cmd looking page(terminal)--so I entered my username and password-- I don't no wa to do after that--- please tell me wa to do
