I already installed it but now I will take a look at freenas instead. Thanks for the great post and this time it's the comments that helped!

  • @dxbtalal Sure I'll send u a PM with my AIM. So from what you're saying I gather you just want a shared folder anyone can access. So no access restrictions or anything?

  • @muhammad517 What do you want to do with your server? Ex webserver, FTP server

  • @maximum988 Maybe you can help me - i'm a Linux virgin. I want to build my own NAS. I want to use it to rip blu rays, reencode them, be able to stream them to a media player, download torrents, administrate files (Like uploading CAD files, and show them to clients - with user accounts that only permits reading specific folders for clients)

Any advices on what to use and how to install? - Sorry for noob questions, but i want to get started soon and learn about Linux.

  • @Anima87 Sorry I took so long to respond to you. Uh theres a custom linux distro for NAS stuff called FreeNAS.

  • @maximum988 Just wondering but how would you go about setting up a basic FTP server for use with Windows 7 and Macintosh?

  • @caseywtw The FTP server I used was called ProFTPd you install it by "sudo apt-get install proftpd" configuration is text file based but I wouldn't be surprised if someone wrote a web interface for it.

  • @maximum988 Okay, thanks, thanks for getting back to me so quick too!

  • @caseywtw Oh no problem. I'll try to remember to let you know if I find some sort of ProFtpd admin GUI
