However, the biggest drawback for Russia was the fact that we supplied the Mujahadeen (sorry about spelling) with stingers and that was the game changer. However, that is just a lay persons perspective. Also, as I look back at that period I wonder if we were wrong in our policy in arming the opposition to Russia. Russia's purpose in Afghanistan?

No one knows what would happen in the event of general war. Even the participants would only have limited information. Modern warfare technology sounds fine in theory; but no one has ever switched it all on at once. You don't know what the other guy has. You can't model something with so many unknowns. The results could be expected to to be a devastated and uninhabitable wasteland in the northern hemisphere at the very least. Something like "On the beach" (Nevil Shute) is probably correct.
