I am compelled to point out that Dr. Moyo is incredibly beautiful as well as a sweeping intelligence. She's my favorite economist right now....few have the guts to say what she's saying. With Christopher Hitchens dying, Dr. Moyo will be my favorite intellectual, I think...it's just a pleasure to hear both of them speak. (I was stunned to hear she is eight years older than I am...she's a bit over forty, looks half her age, with more wisdom than most!)
All countries should practice protectionism by localizing their economies through manufacturing as much of their own goods as possible. Our present 'free' trade system is wasteful and inefficient... not to mention oppressive to countries that are still treated like colonies by Western govts. Today, even when something is grown here in the US, it will be shipped across the world to be processed and then sold back to America again. That is just plain stupid. A few benefit while most suffer.
@IndividualAutonomy Free markets can only operate within localized economies. An economy based on globalization and transnationals will inevitably lead to corporatism. So, between the two choices, I'll take a free market limited in scale. It's the same reason some think that govt can only act efficiently and ethically on the small scale and local level. If sanity means supporting our present dysfunctional system, then I'll gladly accept the honorary title of 'insane'.
I would love to see the stats to back up your claims. I don't have stats but local economies can be corrupt or even more so proportionally than international companies (we would need to compare how much and which would still be more efficient). You could always make a video.
@IndividualAutonomy I don't need stats. My basic claim is that a free market has never existed on the large scale. Considering there are no examples, the proof for my claim is the lack of evidence. The point I was making was about free markets on the small scale. Many such examples exist of that. Many bartering systems of agricultural and indigenous societies in the past were free market or closer to such an ideal than anything. But, to be realistic, a completely free market has never existed.
There are degrees of free markets. Of course pure free markets with the assumption of property norms of have never exisited. That would be free market anarchism. A pure free market fetish is not what I care about or even corporatism itself. It is an economically efficient system relative to another that takes into account various other aspects. Cutting off trade not just world wide but inside the US and even at the state level of more is economic poverty.
If it's stupid, then why don't you go into business and compete with companies doing that in such an inefficient way? You clearly don't understand economies of scale.

@qtutoringhelps I know how corporatism works. I understand economies of corruption. Maybe you should wake up and smell the reality. ROTFL
