can anybody dance like padmini?? she is one of a kind god creation..she got it all..beauty n talent...great dancer n actress...she is not with us now but wont be forgotten..god bless her soul:)
@voxlibertatis/evahartwig: she is not slavic beauty, she is Padmini famous indian dancer/actress of her time....she was from Travancore [kerala].... oleg strizhenov is the gentleman
@plassey65 I didn't say "beautiful". I said "slavic beauty". Beauty can belong to a person of any sex. And the word "beautiful" CAN be used for men in SOME context, for example, when you want to show some kind of particular attitude towards the man. (E.g.: a mother can say: "My son is beautiful.")
@madhuvirk: I think they are supposed to speak a different language, maybe the hero has learned the local language. But it's in Russian because the film is in Russian. It's like, for example, if there was a Russian film version of Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice" - the actors would be speaking Russian even though it's an English play that takes place in Italy.
I didn't think that the U.S.S.R., back in 1958, allowed Russian people to view anything except movies about the joys of collective farming or some Russian ballet.
The thing about Russia for us Americans is despite the Cold War's tension with Western Europe and America, there was a brotherhood with India. Commisar Secretariat Brezhnev is among many rulers after Stalin's death that sanctioned the funding for Indo-russian projects. India was Russia's "golden country" and still is. The two go back several centuries so the political union isn't an unexpected surprise. In the 1950's Russia only allowed foreign films that were from India to be shown.
If you are Indian and go to Russia, a senior citizen my ask you where you come from. If you say "India", it's like "Ohhh! My friend!" and then comes the stories of seeing Bollywood films in the 1950's. "Mother India" was a huge hit in Moscow. It appealed to the audience because of rich family values. I also remember reading about Kishore Kumar speaking to the press at fourth Indo-russian film festival in Moscow in the 1950's. He even sang a song for TV...well...lipsynched it actually (chuckles).
The Soviet government allowed its film industry to work with India's on the project for "Mother India". Some of the set in the film was designed by Russians. Did you know the video clip is of a scene from the Indo-russian film "Pardesi"? Pardesi is about the first European navigator to arrive in India. He was Russian! I forgot his name but he chose to live there for the rest of his life and kept a diary. After Stalin's death there was a huge rush to woo India and the government did a great job.
I didn't know anything of these things. I couldn't have been more surprised when I saw the collaboration in the film between Russia & India. I can fully understand why a Russian might stay in India. It's sort of it's opposite esp. in climate. I think that it's always been a challenge to feed the Russ. people with their long, harsh winters & the sheer breadth of the country. (I live in a former Russian nabe. Many people had rickets & other bone diseases from poor nutrition esp during Stalin
The siberian region of Russia looks breathtaking. All that wilderness....it's no wonder Russia is a continent! The classification as a transcontinental region is unbefitting. It should be placed among the continents, in my opinion.
In India it was same thing prior to the 1990's. That's part of why Russia and India are still very close. They understood the similarity in their roots post-imperialism. Hard work as a virtue was praised. That's one of the values passed down from generation to generation. In America it depeneds on the culture you live in. National virtues are as gray as Bush's pubes. It's unfortunate the media spent alot of time portraying Russia has having a socially-backwards, corrupted people for 30 years.
Well, Stalin didn't help. Hard work is only useful when you get to enjoy the fruits of those labors. Laboring to enrich others is feudalism, no matter what name it's calling itself these days.
@voxlibertatis I did get to see some Russian films in the '80's. One of them was the best rendition of "The Three Sisters" that I'd ever seen on stage or screen.
oh what a great song!i am seeing this song for the first time.i liked it very much.on seeing the comments i acme to know about the pride of pamini and lataji!!!
Thank you very much for posting this beautiful song, sung by a melodious singer with a beautiful voice (Lata) and performed by a beautiful and talented actress and dancer (Padmani). The Pictue quality is very sharp and superb and I thoroughly enjoy watching it over and over. Thanks Again!
Thank you thank you thank you for uploading this. Padmini is a distant relative of mine. I knew her later on in her life, so I never got to appreciate how unbelievably gorgeous and talented she was in her heyday. She enchants the screen, whether it is a Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi, or Russian movie!
Indeed, watch all her Hindi movies from the 1950s. You will be prouder than ever about her . Beauty, sensuality, gracefulness, talent-- she had all these qualities in abundance. She was a special south Indian gift to Bombay cinema. To me, she and Vyjayantimala will remain national treasures. How nice that you had her in your extended family!
every part of your comment bears truth Chamooga. Padmini and Vyjayanthi also Ragini and Kumari Kamala (Kamala Lakshman). No other dancers came near them. Sai Subbulakshmi sisters were also good
Hmm... I saw this movie many times on TV here in Russia and it was coloured in early 60-s, in my chldhood. Maybe you're talking about restoring its colour quality? But this movie was coloured all time!
"I"m very grateful to you. Without your help I would never manage to meet he great vesir [i think it's like that]. I will never forget about it. I couldn't leave without informing you. I'm in great hurry to get to Russia. Thank you"
Chamogaa ji thanks for sharing this video. When one tthinks about b/w film, one associates film's actress with Lata ji,s voice. Accordind to me Actress's contribution for film's sucess is 49%but Lata ji's contribution is 51% Padmini ji was also a very gracefull dancer like V J and Waheeda ji.5*****
To me, Padmini in this film is the very definition of an apsara from Indra's celestial court. Extraordinary dancing and acting talent and traditional south Asian femininity in physical form, attire and expression--- lovely Padmini had every trait that contributed to her charisma. The word "star" doesn't do justice to her goddess-like image. Thanks, EvaHartwig, for bringing so much joy to me and others.
... Isn't amazing that all commentators here including me, a hopeless Lata devotee, forgot to credit this divine singer for the magical song. If Padmini gives visual life to Lata's song, Lata gives vocal vibrancy to Padmini's dance. You can't enjoy one without the other.
As a Lata fan(atic), I am very fond of this song and have heard it many times... But, thanks for forwarding this video... Not often have I found visuals that match Lata's awesome voice.. Surely, in this case, the visual virtuosity enhances the vocal versatility.. Thank you, once again!!!
Brilliant, flawless, beautiful are few words to explain the above song and dance. Padmini is one of the most accomplished Bharatnatyam dancers I have seen. Just look at her expressions and moves. So beautiful. Tony, thank you soooo much for the song. Goes right to my favourite.
she was good however the pinnacle of Bharatanatyam dancers was Kamala Lakshman. She has danced in a few films. Look at "Thillana" from Chori Chori. She was a Padmashri also.

This has been posted in B&W by another fan called Sunaharegeet titled Pardes 57 - Na Dir Dim. In it is mentioned that Sparks has released this DVD in Hindi. I assume that same should be available in English also under title of Strangers. If u understand Hindi - you can buy the Hindi version probably available in metros like Delhi & Mumbai.

Was this movie famous in Russia? Can I get a copy with English subtitles?

Yes, I meant beauty in general as a quality of a person belonging to a nation. So, sex is not important here.
