pretty cool , very useful, i ve ur ebook and i ve also subscribed ur utube channel ur way of teaching guitar to a complete beginner is excellent. I like ur concept of moving forward as a tortoise not rushing into things.
Wonderful Explanation. I try to explain modes to my guitar students and it's always such an awkward thing to try to explain for the first time. Your chart is going to be invaluable for me from now on. So many different ways to look at the amazing math behind music. I really like your explanation. Thanks for making this video.
@realjuvelive It depends. They are just another tool or concept. Over rated probably. But I do find them handy. Not much of an answer, I know, but it is something you have to decide for yourself.
@tortoiseutube yeah, in the second part your playing the different modes starting on A but in this example you use C to make it easier to understand the intervals ?
@Grock66 How is that confusing? A is contained in the C major scale; you're just starting on an A and playing a scale by using notes contained in a C major scale.
Oh wait another question (youll get sick of me after a couple days). you said if u start with the the B note and use it in Dorian its A major. thats becuase its the 12th note from the root and its not a flat or sharp? or just that its a perfect fith? this stuff is intresting to me
thanks for replying man. i sat down and wrote the whole graph down and im gonna sit and study it. and so i have one more question if u could answere it. u said in the beginning that it was the C major scale, so if i wanted to make the scale in oh say F major, is it just starting with F and mapping it out the same way through out the fret board?. i also went on ur site and checked out the DVD course u recomended. can u use pre paid CCards paypals?. i should have looked but i didnt see were
stupid question. for ex. if i wanted to do a scale and start with B just for the hell of it but wanted to do it in Ionian, i just start with B(the root) but just use the pattern of the Ionian, or am i getting this mixed up?
back to the Ionian scale can your third chord of the scale, G. Be a G5 major instead of it being just major. I noticed you made the B7 major at the end and I wondered about the 5th note of the scale and wondered why its not a G5. I can see its not necessary but just if you want it heavier.
perhaps I misunderstand stood you when you were talking about the B and the 7 at the time. You were talking about the C-E-G in it and then you said stuff about the 7th. Then you said that its a Cmaj7th chord (where I screwed up) which threw me off because B is under the 7. Also I know you don't call it B7 Major. And you call it B7. I just wanted you to not misunderstand me. My bad I fell like a newb now.
aoelian is the relative minor.. or 6th mode of any major scale.. also known as the Natural Minor scale (in the key of C Major it is A-B-C-D-E-F-G.. and A)
I've left comments on most of your vids....for this one, I will tell you that this is by far the easiest way to interpret modes of all the other lessons anywhere on you tube. If folkscan grasp the idea of a "scale" then they shol dbe able to look at any of your videos 2 -3 times each and have a damn good understanding of what is going on...you've saved a lot of folks plenty of dollars in lessons by your "simple but effective way of explaining things!
Thanks :) I've been playing for 20 years and my son is just starting out @ 14 yr old, and I am finding it really hard to explain stuff I never learned the theory for but know just where everything is and how it all fits together just from playing. It is also a nice refresher tutorial for me. Well done, and thanks again.
well done jb. one of the most lucid explanations I've heard. excellent. but wouldn't a keyboard explanation be easier? not meant as a criticism by any means, but a comment.

@Grock66 the 6th note of the major key is its relative minor, 6th note of Cmajor key is A, this is what I can make out of it.

killeyewill 2 years ago
If you are playing B dorian, that is the 2nd mode of A major.
The modes of A Major scale are:
A Ionian, B Dorian, C#Phrygian, D lydian, E Mixolydian, F# Aeolian, G# Locrian
tortoiseutube 2 years ago
I thought i got it but now I dont again... I thought all major scales had only "whole" notes (no flat notes)..
DAMN why is this so hard... =(
iets1243 2 years ago
Hehe, this is confusing
martomj 2 years ago
A major scale has both whole (w) and half (h) notes. Also depending on which scale you're in, it will have sharps or flats (not both).
Major scale follows this formula: w w h w w w h

1: Every major scale is exactly the same. Uses the exact same pattern. It's just moved up or down the fretboard to get different keys.
2: Not sure about prepaid cc's.

killeyewill 2 years ago
You got it. It's a movable pattern. If you start on B (with the Ionian pattern) then you are playing in the key of B major.
If you start on a B note with the Dorian pattern, then you would be playing in the key of A major. :)

The 3rd chord of this scale (C major) is Em. G is the 5th chord.
B7 major? What's that? There is no B7 in the key of C. And why call it B7 major? It's just B7. And B7 is in the key of E.
Seems you are asking about power chords. (Root and 5th).
Are you?

I think I might actually get it now, maybe.
Someone tell me if I'm getting this wrong, but are you just starting on a different place in the scale for a different mode?
Wait, does he have the modes up there right though? I thought Aoelian was major, not Ionian.
