In Through the Out Door was in a lot of ways, the closest Zep ever came to having a bit of a "prog rock" element in their writing. There was more use of synths on this album than any other they ever released. This song has a very epic and powerful feel to it because of the synths. Makes you wonder, had Bonham not died what their music woulda became in the 80's.
Well from hearing this outtake one can understand Plant's reticence to play without Bonzo. Bonzo was the engine, the glue that held it all together. Without Bonzo they could and can play the great old stuff but create new material? Don't think so. Don't get me wrong, the '95 P&P show at the Gorge from row 11, stage right was really amazing. But it wasn't truly Zep.
JPJ created most of their song's structure and arrangement with JP doing some, but mostly guitar riffs with solos, RP on lyrics and of course JB layin' down the skins. The only thing JPJ never did was sing. He played keys, bass, guitar, mandolin, violin, basically any string-percussive instrument on rhthym and leads tho lead guitar solos were all JP.
Definitely underrated and had the least ego of any legend RnR'er.
They ARE legends...never to be duplicated or repeated.
Baton Rouge May 77,,,they were a Hour and 45 minutes late as they got caught in NOLA to BR traffic on I-10 and played 5 extra songs for that digression. Awesome show.
the "produced by Jimmy Page" was an honorary title at this time i believe, JPJ and RP produced this album, i love this outtake... it gives me chills as a zep fan.... what happened to the little JPJ riffs??? a great zep song..... i cant understand 50% of the lyrics....
ya, rip bonzo, yes ITTOD is a jonesy and percy album, bonzo still banged and page still ripped.... the thing is, if you loved the 1st 8 albums this album is just the 9th and final of the legacy.... every song is just the continuing history of the story of the greatest band ever,......
I'm a keyboard player originally and when I heard the bass on this song I wanted to know who was playing it. When I found out it was the same guy doing all the synths and the bass guitar that was it, had to pick the bass up straight away!!!
I was fucking there. I might be 56, but I don't have alzheimers, nor do I forget how to spell altzhimerrs. Zepp nailed this song on the night, long live rock and roll.
I think this is one of Zeps most under appreciated albums. Listening to this really makes me think of Jonesy's solo work. He was so quiet, but he was just as brilliant as Page and Plant (and Bonham). There really was magik in those 4. Nothing duplicated to this day.
I agree that Jonesy and Robert were the ones who were arriving to the studio on time for these sessions and that it was Jonesy who wrote most of it. But Jimmy did some great playing on All My Love, I'm Gonna Crawl and also some great guitar synthesizer playing in Fool in the Rain. Bonzo's playing on all the tracks speak for themselves. All in all it ended up to be a team effort when Jimmy and Bonzo dragged their asses into he studio and did their parts.
For the longest time I thought they had never actually "rehearsed" Carouselambra. I thought it was brought to the studio as "ready to play" by JPJ, with each one recording his parts with the engeneer. I really like what I'm hearing - it shows that this song could have found its way to the stage.
@TheHuntingdrummer - Dude, HOW WRONG can you be ?? Can't you hear everything is different here ? Just check out the LYRICS, for Christ's sake ! It's a prototype !
Its a trip how your such a zeppelin fan you can literally look at a photo and know what tour and year it is by the hair, clothes, drums, jewelry, and such. If your that person let me know with a thumbs up. Can help be in awe of these fools...simply the finest band ever!!!!!!!!
@baronsting Funny you say that because I can look at Zeppelin photos (or photos of other bands for that matter) and tell just by their clothes what year the photo was taken.
I always thought it wouldve been cool to go into a big guitar solo jam after the slower middle part. That wouldve made it a really really awesome song.
whoever comments on other peoples music is like a DJ your a record player player!!! stealer of other peoples shit. fuck you no one cares what you think, go fuck a rotweiller.
@Forinformation Carouselambra is better than Stairway and Black Dog put together, IMHO. This has always been one of my favorite tunes from my favorite band.
@goldplatted45 I'm sorry what the fuck did you just say? thats so not true presence was a total masterpiece let me fucking remind you asswhipe that not only was achilles last stand on presence but hot dog was on inthrough the outdoor so was fool in the rain and many other geat songs some of his best fucking solos are on presence and in through the out door you fucking moron.
Don't take the music too seriously - the lyrics can be inane but they need to sound GOOD, something Zeppelin always managed to do. This song is epic, way ahead of its time.
If this song and the album in it's entirety seem different from the rest of the zep stuff that's because it is! This album was mostly produced by Plant and Jones while Page was far gone in his addiction. It is the least Page driven album because they couldn't get him in the studio on most days. He'd walk in occasionally and lay down a few guitar tracks then vanish again. JPJ's overpowering keyboards on this track are a perfect example of the band trying to cover for Jimmy. Ok, school's out ;)
I love Pages style of playing but a band that sticks with riffy rock year after year gets old, This is my favorite album because they pulled through and made it
The lyrics are like some returning prince to his kingdom stuff like in the Song Remains The Same movie, but the music (from the very first riff to the climbing crescendo to the transition to the mellow segment) is just SO appealing and progressive sounding to me that I don't even really get into the lyrics until the end where Plant says pick the fruit and guard the sea so prophetically. The song sounds futuristic STILL.
I know what you are saying (yes, this is the future from the late seventies) , but some songs just ALWAYS sound progressive (forward thinking as far as technology and possibility...NOT progressive as in politics) with their momentous structure, etc. This is one of those songs...much like "Won't Get Fooled Again" by the Who...or various songs by Pink Floyd or Yes. They have a timeless quality because of this.
delacrux, thats because its a bootleg you fucking idiot!! How fucking stupid are you? On a scale of 1 to 10, you must be about fucking zero you knobhead!!

Boy, whenever I hear these two track room mic type of recordings of Zep, I am totally amazed at how full their sound without the benefit of a full PA. Immense.
This is my 3rd fav LZ song. There's 3 notes this song hits that just send me. JPJ and B3 is truly amazing. It's great to be in with the creative process. What a thrill! luv it luv it luv it thank you thank you thank you. Diane
@vincevega0 Yep, if not for him, it wouldn't have happened. This song is my favorite, a classic as important as Stairway in my opinion. John Paul Jones was the glue that kept this one together.
@dougww1ectebow I often wonder what Zep would have evolved into, if they had lasted into the era of digital synths. Plant's "In The Mood" gives a hint.
One of my favorite zep tunes. The bridge in the middle (key of D with 1/2 time drum parts) is beautiful. I know Mr. Jones made the group more than a classic rock group. If you ever wondered what the Rain Song would sound like in piano, check out the vid response (rain song). I would also like to know where these rare recordings are coming from. Relative or studio engineer with access to the masters? Thanks for posting.
I believe J P Jones was upset that he wasn't involved with the 95 No Quarter project. Basically Page just joined Robert's band. Robert already had Charlie Jones as a bass player since Now and Zen, Manic NIrvana and then Fate of Nations when drummer Michael Lee Joined in. So I believe Jones might have said something.
Read in bookstore - flipping through one of their available biography - that it would have been the opening song in their 1980 North American tour that got cancelled because of Bonzo's death.
No ONE person alone was ZEPPELIN! Page the producer (created the coveted drum sound!) Bonham to execute it, JPJ to hold the bottom (and ALLof his plethora of musical skills he shares with Page) And, well, Plant was THE quintessential (sp) Front man. Why argue whose what? They form a body.
once you give it a few times, it really grows on you. It was my least favorite on In Through The Out Door, and now it's one of my favorites on that album.
Alot of Zeppelin songs were made around one Jones riff.( in this case a synth riff)See Wanton Song,,Fool in the Rain,Trampled ,Black Dog(bass riff). And they manage to make something epic out of all those.
You're absolutely correct. Jonesy was not given credit on MANY Zeppelin songs that his hand had a major part in...Kasmir, for instance. Why wasn't Jonesy given writing credit for the string arrangement? There's much more to John Baldwin that No Quarter, folks. He was one-fourth of Led Zeppelin.
Well, even though Bonham is my favorite of the four, Jonesy was not given as much credit as he should have gotten. Without him, there would be no Stairway to Heaven, no Kashmir, no Trampled Underfoot, no No Quarter, no Carouselambra. Without Jones, there wouldn't even be Led Zeppelin.
Definitely right. I would even say Jones is the biggest contributor out of the bunch. You pointed out that without him there would be no Led Zeppelin. That's how big of a contibutor Jones is. No Jones, no Zep. No Zep, no reason to live anymore. lol jk I'm a die hard fan of Led Zeppelin, but not literally lol.
i like the tempo for sure.

TheSanityInspector 1 year ago
@TheSanityInspector
After the 1st album Plant chose to insult the guitar and did a lot of commercial wannabee stuff. HOPELESS.
In 1993 he returned with Fate Of Nations, incl loads of Zepp stuff live.
Synths are shit and mainly ok to make a demo.
Nothing beats good old keys like Hammond.

Thanks for posting.

any one know why Jimmy and Robert gave J P J the cold shoulder at the hall of fame that was kind of weird
roxydog2004 2 years ago 2
I believe J P Jones was upset that he wasn't involved with the 95 No Quarter project. Basically Page just joined Robert's band. Robert already had Charlie Jones as a bass player since Now and Zen, Manic NIrvana and then Fate of Nations when drummer Michael Lee Joined in. So I believe Jones might have said something.

Read in bookstore - flipping through one of their available biography - that it would have been the opening song in their 1980 North American tour that got cancelled because of Bonzo's death.

Oh, and BTW, many songs were born from suggestive beats created by none other than my hero: John Henry Bonham!
Page himself has stated that.
FaiellaBen 2 years ago
No ONE person alone was ZEPPELIN! Page the producer (created the coveted drum sound!) Bonham to execute it, JPJ to hold the bottom (and ALLof his plethora of musical skills he shares with Page) And, well, Plant was THE quintessential (sp) Front man. Why argue whose what? They form a body.
FaiellaBen 2 years ago 5
You're absolutely right. There were four people in Led Zeppelin. I can't believe more people don't realize that.

Think this song off of "in through the out door" would have made a great live number, sadly although it was rehearsed it was never played live.

once you give it a few times, it really grows on you. It was my least favorite on In Through The Out Door, and now it's one of my favorites on that album.
beau96080 2 years ago
Yes, John Paul Jones was totally underrated and didn't get the credit he deserved. Just listen to the bass on The Lemon Song! Unbelievable.
And the riff to Black Dog was his, by the way.
hiramchik 2 years ago 4
JPJ is zep a far as arrangements were concerned,Page has taken a ride on the back of his talent for a bit longer than you think-incredible man.
ledzeplad 2 years ago 2
JPJ was the better musician. Page the better producer.
Codackussell 2 years ago 4
listen to the bass on the studio version of this... it's really really great
MrPinkZeppelin 2 years ago 4
Alot of Zeppelin songs were made around one Jones riff.( in this case a synth riff)See Wanton Song,,Fool in the Rain,Trampled ,Black Dog(bass riff). And they manage to make something epic out of all those.
abrahamlincoln0900 2 years ago
You're absolutely correct. Jonesy was not given credit on MANY Zeppelin songs that his hand had a major part in...Kasmir, for instance. Why wasn't Jonesy given writing credit for the string arrangement? There's much more to John Baldwin that No Quarter, folks. He was one-fourth of Led Zeppelin.
NastyNole1 2 years ago
He received no quarter of the credit
shikamaru412 2 years ago
Well, even though Bonham is my favorite of the four, Jonesy was not given as much credit as he should have gotten. Without him, there would be no Stairway to Heaven, no Kashmir, no Trampled Underfoot, no No Quarter, no Carouselambra. Without Jones, there wouldn't even be Led Zeppelin.
DustinEagle13 2 years ago 10
Definitely right. I would even say Jones is the biggest contributor out of the bunch. You pointed out that without him there would be no Led Zeppelin. That's how big of a contibutor Jones is. No Jones, no Zep. No Zep, no reason to live anymore. lol jk I'm a die hard fan of Led Zeppelin, but not literally lol.
RockerForLife74 2 years ago 5
Were they really his riffs?
If so why didn't they give him writing credit?
They did on this song. So that makes me think the other riffs were Page's.
