I saw this once in Arizona. I first noticed a large group of pigeons perching close together on a high electric wire over a busy street. A few days later massive amounts of sparrows were in the same area all sitting very close together. Then I saw the reason. A large eagle had come in to prey on them. They actually were banding together as a defense measure! When they flew it was in a group like this, to confuse and rebuff the predator or perhaps to show intimidation. Quite impressive.
@CasuallyObservant It's also a social thing, the dominant males get the best places on the tree/trees to nest for the night, with the others near the outside.
its gorgeous isnt it! the same thing happened to me....we thought it was a tornado! we tried to film it but it was too late....thanks for putting it on youtube!
They're not scary they're cool! It's just Starlings settling down for the night. Many people think they're pests but their flocking behavior is amazingly! You can walk right into the middle of a swarm and they'll never touch you. I've done it with barn swallows. Barn swallows don't gather into such large swarms but they're even cooler!
i saw the same thing in south-west greece. We were about a kilometer away and there must've been about ten thousand. When they change doirection you could hear the rush of wind
if you've ever stood outside when a big flock of birds flies overhead the sound is just amazing. of course the group of birds i saw werent as big but still.
Saruman's been at it again..

A very good example of systems theory. The whole is always more then the sum of its parts. The human body works the same way as does everything else.
