Awwww so sweet I Owned one myself once she was a the best miss her a lot, she got 15 years old when she died, but she lives in my heart forever. Miss to have one again they are lovely birds.
they are adorable! I remember seeing a senegal baby - two months old, and he could already say a few words SO clearly, trully sounded like a human voice. I was very impressed :)
Though I couldn't afford one. I have a parakeet, he is very sweet, just doesn't talk, he picked up cellphone sounds just too quickly so he just whistles :) but maybe I will get him to say something too!
My Grey Misty is not and never will be clipped. He is only in his cage to sleep or if the house has no people at home (rare) He never flies into trouble only out of it!!
@myjg123456 i got my senegal about a year ago now, she cost me $600. I got her from a very reputable breeder and a lot of handling and training went into the birds before they sell them. also have to take into account the price of the cages, thankfully i already had a cage. a good cage can be another few hundred dollars.
I watch my neighbors sengegal when they go away....he's quite the character! Very aggressive, but VERY entertaining! funny, funny bird! Oh....and he's also very quiet, all the noises and sounds he makes are quiet ones except for one that he rarely makes.
They are absolutely adorable! We have a senegal parrot named Loki. Contrary to what you may have heard, he can screech quite loudly! We think he learned from the bigger birds, like the cockatoos, in the store he came from.
Thanks for sharing! I understand your nervousness when they fly; they could get hurt, so it's a necessary evil.
Aww so cute! :3 this was over two years ago so they must be tame grown up parrots now, when I got my senegal he was a lot older and he bites but he's getting tame lol
These are the Best birds in the world! We have two! just please keep their wings clipped... our first one flew out on a tree and we waited for three hours to get some help. Before help arrived, a hawk swooped down and grabbed him and flew back to his nest with him:( One of the most traumasizing events of my life! most people think other people just find them..
your baby senegals are beautiful. i have a eight year old senegal, i never knew how you could love something so little. justin is my good buddy,my baby and a friend when i need one. your babies are so tame, somebody is going to be very lucky to get your senegals
Omg they're just so cute, they make me think of my senegal parrot when he was a baby!! he maked that grerrrrr noise too:D My advice: Buy one right now:)
I wish I would've done a little more homework before buying my jenday. Everything I've come to learn about Sennie's since then makes me really want one! Can you give me an idea of their noise level compared to a jenday?
Senegals don't make loud screeches like the jendays do. But, at times during the day when there is excitement the senegal can make loud chirps. But, generally they are much quieter than jendays.
@rita191919 never had a Jenday, but at 5years old, my mother got us a Senegal, Around 1981, had this bird my whole child to adult life.I'm taking it so hard, he's gone now. past on 14th of this month.I'm 34years old, and very sad, my parrot was about as old as me.so healthy, day he passed, morning he seemed his normal self, so shocked here. But my Goofy, was one loud Sennie. could be heard for blocks! he love to make noise, and I loved it! did every sound in the world!
@rita191919 I don't know very much about Senegals, but I was volunteering at a local parrot rescue, and their only Senegal was quite noisy, definitely the loudest bird in the room. I guess it just depends on the individual parrot. This one was afraid of humans.
@socalgirl220 They may be quieter than Jendays but I wouldn't say they don't have loud screeches. They do have quite a sharp noise they can make in protest at times. So I wouldn't say they are a quiet bird, a Green Cheek would be quieter. When content, yes, quiet, making cute little noises, but when they want your attention, it can be piercing. Don't get me wrong, I love senegals, always have, I just don't want anyone thinking they're always quiet ;).
A fully flighted bird has to spend more time in it's cage to keep him safe. If it's owner has food cooking, doors open, or whatever...they can not let the pet out of it's cage. Also most pet cages are not large enough to allow this bird to fly. Most professional parrot behaviorist advise that a pet parrot who is trimmed is a much better pet. Your assumption that trimming wings is cruel and "crippling" is wrong and I pray that your birds stay safe!!
@rita191919 here is something to think about for you:
first of all,i am totally against to cut the wings of any kind of bird,IF there are no need to do so.i have a senegal since 1982.i do cooking, cleaning etc,my senegal is flying around everyday, without accident in all these years i have him.imagine, your parents would a doc have to cut off your legs when you were little because one day you may have an accident while you run and get hurt.just think about it.
@tuellich04 Used to work for a vet. It's not good to see a bird who flew into a pot of hot water or into a ceiling fan. You have been very lucky. It's just like a haircut. And as long as your bird has toys, and people to play with, They are fine. Comparing it to getting your legs cut off is pretty extreme, and no comparison at all. It's sad to see a heartbroken cockatiel owner standing in a vet's office with her dead bird in her hands because it got spooked and flew into a pot of water.
i know it is sad and heartbreaking to see someone holding his dead bird in its hands after what happened.i am sure it was a terrible death for the poor bird and it makes me miserable thinking about it.still,i am against cutting off wings.i made my entire place here totally safe for my parrot,so he can walk and fly around without hurting himself or nibble on any wire etc.the comparison i did may be extreme but some people have to read something extreme to understand.
@rita191919 it really does depend on the owner's situation and the bird. My conure is flighted, but he's a clingy little guy (as I've heard green cheeks commonly are, hehe). He only really flies when he thinks I'm leaving the room without him, at which point he flies to my shoulder.
I wish more people would do this to their birds, because people have absolutely no idea... I feel very comfortable with my oboe out of his cage because he doesn't fly.
About a year ago, i had a cockatiel, i tought it to whistle many songs, always took him out and also always clpped its wings, one day i took him out thinking its wings had not grown back, and guess what? it flew away, so i believe there is nothing wrong with clipping birds wings and they are much safer that way, but u do what you want with yours, just wanted to give u an example of what can happen, now i got a senegal, believe me his wings are gonna be clipped as well
How could you cripple those lovely babies for life, by clipping their wings exactly at fledjing time? Why didn't you give them the chance to learn to be what they are born to be? You could clip them later if you think they have to be flightless. Imajine a human baby prevented of learning how to walk. What kind of beeng it will be? What's the point of having bird which is not bird? I am sorry for sayng all this, but it is so insane to cripple this beauties.
You did not offend me....however.... I do not consider trimming wings as crippling them!! I allow my babies to fully fledge. They had been flying for quite some time and were very adept at flying and landing before I trimmed their wings. Trimming wings is for their own safety. We usually have several babies around here at all times, not to mention our pets. If we allowed all of them to be fully flighted it would be very dangerous.
If our babie's new owners decide to let them become fully flighted when their wings grow back, then that is up to them. When their wings grow back they will already know how to fly safely as we allowed them to learn when they fledged. My personal opinion though is that a clipped bird is not only safer but is a much better pet. I respect others opinion...but I sure hate to hear and read almost daily about pet owners losing their beloved pets because of accidents from not being clipped!!
Our senegal stays cliped. When he had flight he flew into a door. We are very lucky he's ok. We keeped him trimedto keep him safe. He is perfectly happy just walking around.
exactly....it can be very dangerous especially for little birds to be flighted. it is not worth the danger to keep them fully flighted!! pet birds are perfectly happy to climb and walk to where ever they want to be!!
@vbotev because some bird need their wings to be clipped because they will fly anywhere and they won't come to you so they will never get used to you.
that's why my bird needed to get his wings trimmed because everytime he got out of his cage he would just fly up on the curtains until he needs to get back in his cage wich was a hell to do because it's really hard to catch himXD
@vbotev i have a 8 week old cockatiel and i must agree i HATE the idea of clipping a birds wings :( but my chief was wing clipped just to make sure he doesnt fly around so we can properly tame him. i just cant wait for his wings to grow back!!! :)
