It's really nice! Can you share schematics or some explainations about how to drive HDD heads? For example, i can form analogue CVs and pulses with my modular, but what i should do with HDD?.
Wow, this is what i want to do, I started with circuit bending ,but well, i was seeing stars from breathing all that soldering smoke. And a bit lost since there are no rules.
I am trying to figure out what you did over there. Its amazing, beautiful work!
Well, you can`t completely avoid solder fumes, buy you can learn how to breath while soldering.
Experimentation and being no rules is exactly what attracts some people to circuit bending. I like those glitches and strange noises but most of circuit benders don`t make some music with that noise that can be listened. It is always just noise and only noise. It gets pretty boring quickly.
Thank you for your comments, and wish you luck in your work.
Yes, darling likes to burn. :) I never measured, but I expect those HDD heads can pull quite much so I`m not that surprised they blow.
I`m not sure when I`ll continue with this project. I finished beaters and they are quite lightweight. I used bamboo barbecue sticks and paper balls made with wallpaper glue. Sure, beaters affects the speed but not that much. I can set the negative delay to compensate the latency if needed.
no probs, I think you can link 2 darlington in pins together and link the outputs so that way the current is shared between them, they should not burn up so quickly.
maybe an update, you could line them up front of a kiddies xylohone, that should sound cool.
I already have 2 pins per HDD It can handle 1A, that still isn`t enough at safe side. : )
About driving the xylophone... that was one of the ideas. I bough some old xylophones at flea market, but eventually decided to go with spanners instead as it is more in spirit of recycling.
that must have been satisfying to see them all in action. the sound is interesting, minimal clicking tones... and the bounce sound adds flavor. I'd like to see what you accomplish with the addition of beaters.
Yes, it was satisfying to see it in action. The sound itself isn`t important even I liked that bouncing one myself and I could leave that one as it is. :) I`m planning to attach beaters to arms and I expect versatile, and much more interesting sound. I`ll try to find some time for it. ;) Thanks for a comment
All the testing is done, and when I find some time I`ll do the instalation. Probably modular design rather than boxed. But this is so low prioritized project right now. I did it over the weekend while I was waiting for the important parts for other projects to arrive.
You know, not all people create things to earn money out of it. Don`t get me wrong, I`m not running away from the money, but my creative side is not inspired by the money. Some people knows how to have fun and enjoy their creative side.
And, why you want me to teach you how to do it? I just don`t understand your point of view on "reasons" to be creative and I don`t support that way of thinking. :|

cool, been watching a few vids on stripped down hdd, love the oldschool commodore psu!
I fried a couple of the darlington driver chips trying to make a parralelle port robot, they loves to burn don't they?
whens the next vid with the drum sticks, will the extra weight affect the timing?

so, a different Mm size spanner to each note then?
the otherday I found out maplin stock uln2803a for about 83p! twice the price i was getting them on ebay but a hell of a lot easier.
djdavies83 2 years ago
I wan`t be able to cover the octave range with different spanners. The goal is to make art installation without special practical usage.
I`m really not working on this project right now even it is almost finished.

Yes, it is good PSU. :) I mounted a power switch and 2x DIN7 jack so I can power 2 synths with it. I already have too much wires around. :p

I'ts great!! the only thing that you miss is a box or some container, for all that electronics and wires.
It seems that you have to study all MIDI standard! that, and make it all work together is a really great job!!
Congratulations!
I'd like to make something with some old hdd i have (they have powerful magnets) maybe like speakers or a laser show... mhhh, just thinking...
