John Rockefeller once remarked that "competition is a sin". Their ideal system is a centrally managed socialist world economy. However, the world has been restructured in such an interdependent way that a return to full independence for a nation like America would be nigh on impossible. The US is now totally dependent on a flood of cheap, shoddy goods made in China. None of this is by accident, it is all by design.

This should be sought as a safeguard should diplomatic relations with a potential adversary diminish. Many goods from China are not only shoddy, they are dangerous. From toys with lead based paint to food exported to Japan containing poisons to cheap watches that fall apart on the 2nd week you use them. That is a fair, albeit superficial analysis.

Through the development of private industry throughout the 20th Century more people have access to a wider variety of goods than ever before. Not all of these can be produced within a single nation so what you are asking is for people en masse to change their habits regarding consumption. Isn't that what the Environmentalist movement asks for too? More stringent consumerism?
