everyone throwing out stats need to take into account Nolan's era every year is below 4 except for 2 years. His first and last. And he had 8 years below 3. He didn't get much run support. 324 wins might be 424. Imagine what we would be saying if he had just a little more run support. The greatest of all time.
First of all, we won't even discuss wins and losses because they are terrible stats. I will say this however, his teams were not nearly as bad as people make them out to be.
Try looking at his ERA+. When you look at Nolan's ERA compared to the era in which he played, he's not nearly as impressive as say, Greg Maddux or Pedro Martinez. Or Lefty Grove for that matter. Or Walter Johnson.
ERA+ takes into account ballpark and era. Nolan's is not impressive.
Check out Ryan's ERA+ and WHIP. Hell, look at his K/9, BB/9, or K/BB ratio. Ryan pitched in an easy pitching era in pitchers parks for most of his career (Anaheim Stadium, Astrodome, Shea).
Ryan's career ERA+ in nearly 5,400 innings is 111 (just 11 points above AVERAGE).
Please, tell me how I fail. Ryan wasn't that great, let alone the greatest. If you believe that he is, then you fail, not me.
Let's put it this way. If Ryan had pitched for Yanks, Bsox, Dodgers we wouldn't have this discussion. He played against these teams making him the enemy instead of the hero.
You have something against a 3.19 era and 1.247 whip? strikeouts at K/9 9.5? hits H/9 6.6? I really don't know what to say to you. He was the most intimidating pitcher ever.
baseball is not an easy sport no matter what era you play in. YHO he pitched in an easy era. lol. as apposed to what? steroid era. soft baseball era?
Hey i have a baseball with his signature on it. Can anyone tell me how much its worth? It has his signature and the following text printed below it. 5000th strikeout 8-22-89 300th win 7-31-90 27th major league season.
I agree. Carlton is a legend as well. He could even be a better pitcher than Ryan. If I had to choose between Carlton and Ryan to start a game, I would rather go with Carlton, even though Ryan is one of my favorite pitchers.
Nolan Ryan was a beast. Don't let the 292 losses fool you, the reason for the high number is because some of the teams he played for didn't provide much run support. But imagine if they did, he would have gotten to 400 wins!
While the teams that Ryan did play for didn't provide much run support, it doesn't help him that he is the all time leader in walks. While he is the all time leader in strikeouts, and no-hitters, he only won 53% of his games in his career. When he was pitching, it was either feast or famine. You didn't know if Ryan was going to strike someone out, or walk someone. However, I give Ryan credit for a great career that lasted from 1968 to 1993.
you're right about the walk thing but Ryan ranks 7th all time with 61 shutouts. Lets face it all pitchers need good run support to get the W and his teams didn't provide that, with good teams his loss total would have been in the 230-250 range with 340+ victories.
I know he had pitched for mediocre teams for most of his career. If he would have pitched for a team like the Yankees, his record would have been better. He could have even won 60% of his games if that was the case. Also, hitters OBP vs Ryan was (.309). He also won only 53% of his games (.526), in his career.
I don't think he would have gotten 400 wins, but 340-360, would be a little more accurate. Don't forget, hitters on base percentage vs Ryan was over (.300), even though hitters only hit (.204), against him. He also won 53% of his games, so he needed every strikeout, and every no-hitter he got. And not to mention, he never won a Cy Young Award.
Would somebody please pay attention to me I'm so lonely and so miserable, I spend all my time masturbating to pictures of Nolan Ryan and posting shit all over YouTube because I'm a low life degenerate douchebag who has never been laid and never will be because I'm too fucking ugly and nobody likes pencil-dick Asian bitches..........I need HELP.
No comparision ! Nolan Ryan is the KING of K's...5714 strikeouts, 383 strikeouts in 1973, 7-no hitters...BUT of all the records he holds and makes him the greatest of all-time...ALLOWING THE FEWEST HITS PER 9 INNINGS..
you guys say nobody can throw as hard at the age he was but randy johnson can still throw 98 and he shown it in 2006 in the playoffs. he paces himself now probably because he couldnt handle it a whole year but both nolan ryan and randy johnson are superhumans. it's sad johnson will probably retire before 300 with back problems though, clemens came back to get back his K record. i want randy johnson to beat it.
i dont think anybody could do it anyway like he did he said wasnt gonna retire a relief or middle reliver he said he was gonna retire healthy and he was bringing heat down plate at around 95+ when he retired . butcha nobody gonna have an arm like that when there the age he was..meat and potatoes no STERIODS ! Nolan is one in a life time there is nobody in his league!

And yes, we would be having this discussion.

jjmacjjmac 2 years ago
Yeah, the steroids era. And Lefty Grove's era.
Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, and Greg Maddux all pitched in a far more difficult era. They are far and away better than Ryan.
His ERA+ is 111, barely above average. As opposed to 154 (Pedro Martinez), 136 (Randy Johnson), 132 (Greg Maddux).
His 1.247 WHIP isn't anything great as opposed to 1.052 (Martinez), 1.171 (Johnson), and 1.143 (Maddux).
Roger Clemens and Bob Gibson were far more intimidating.
Has nothing to do with his teams.

Greatness of Nolan Ryan is not only the 5714strikeouts and no-hitters...Ryan is all-time best allowing fewest hits per 9 innings...
Go see his 7th no-hitter on mlb dot com....see the 44 year old Ryan blow 16 Blue Jays away...that is greatness.
