  • there were atrocities on both sides and both sides should recognize the atrocities on their own as well as the other side. One thing I don't understand was the fighting between the scots-gaelic of the ulster plantation and the irish gaelic

  • @lookatmepleasesir the scots in the north were lowlanders mostly, the irish and the highlanders got on great but no one likes the lowlanders...

  • @lookatmepleasesir Its funny the way you atrocities on both side? Hmmm we Irish fought because there was so much prejudice because we were catholic and didn't want a foreign power. When we stood against it there was many slaughterings by the british, all throughout the years, but once a british soldier dies we are classed as "terrorists". Still nowadays it happens. We fought for the freedom of our country. Same thing in Ulster, its Irish, not scottish. Plantations should never of happened.

  • @mcgzer I'm talking about Ulster. Even if the plantations should of never happened they happened, 400 years ago now. Ulster Scots are Irish.

They made us yanks feel right at home. Talk about rebble songs. Sweet lamb of Jesus.Thank you for making or trip one of the best.

  • Wow! This is incredible. Hats off to the Clancy Brothers!

  • Typical Irish, all the comments involve swearing xD P.S I'm just joking with you, I'm part Irish and just enjoying the music.

  • @TheTarquin9a get back to the pub some gypsy boxer stealing your beer

  • oh fucking get over it you fucking wankers, by the way your music is fucking shit, sounds like a load of old drunks in the pub, hang on it is a load of fucking drunken racist twats, dont insult england when your the rasicist uneducated people out of the 2 countrys

  • @GODZILLAtalibanslaye That's what I'm saying. That violence was used in the beginning is in itself a sad indictment.

  • humanity had to resort to such means as it was striped and beaten out of us dont be surprised when you savage a man, treat him like a dog and he bites back

  • It is a shame that humanity has to resort to violence, regardless of the cause.

  • may they rest in peace <=,(

  • It's common sense there are many beautiful Irish and English people in this world. Take for instance the champion of anti slavery William Wilferforce who was a Brit. Grace is easy to recognise, and so is malice.

  • According to Wikipedia the Irish kept European civilisation alive through the 8 centuries of the Dark Ages. Europe owes a Debt of Gratitude to the Irish.

This achievement might explain a competitive noncompassion to us in the Great Famine which saw 1.5 million Irish die, and another million flee, all while net exporter of food. But we all know better now. As PM Tony Blair made his Apology. Amen. See Cahill, Thomas, "How the Irish Saved Civilization" (1995). Tom McLoughlin, Australia.

  • @Tom5578 And guess who wrote that in wickipedia?? An irishman of course. Try a library old chap, for in that place of calm and learning, you will find the truth to be very different. As for debt, the micks have been living out iof everyones elese wallet for centuries, even now they are bankrupt and it falls to others to "bail" them out again. 500k died in the famine, and most of those through disease caused by filth, nice to see you appear to be a parasite living from the fat.

  • @MrMickroach Why come on here and spout hate?? It is ireland that is bailing out france, UK and germany....nothing to do woth the irish tax payer. Really don't know how someone could have no life to the extent that they try and pick fights on youtube. Try to get a girlfriend and be nice to her.

  • @Frankieireland No hate there, not from me but hard facts! Does it make you angry to be told the truth?

  • @MrMickroachit qualifies as hate when you call irish people as a race"micks".It also qualifies as hate to tell lies about the famine that the British govt has apologised for.As I said, try and fool a girl into believing you're a nice person and you will find that the need to be a BNP youtube warrior feels less enticing than simply just listening to nice irish trad music like the clancy brothers or even better volunteer for afghanistan and head straight for a roadside bomb.slán leat mo buachaill.

  • @Frankieireland What is hate by calling you micks? Seems like you are psychotic....and no, the British goernment did not apologise for anything at all! There was a pan european famine but to you "people" it is always just about you and remember, most who died in the 1840s did not die through starvation alone, it was through filth and disease. Tell me, why do you mick have a hang up about the BNP? A minority movement in the UK......and its noce to see you know the IRA design the roadside bombs!

  • @MrMickroach it's a derogatory term.Obviously you have BNP sympathies, that's perfect, thank you.tony blair apologised for the famine, look it up.it was not a pan-euro famine and most people didn't die from disease,it is advisable to use books as reference points instead of BNP pamphlets.I hate the BNP because i hate all prejudice and ignorance.i don't think the IRA designed the roadside bombs but if they did then i'm proud.

  • @Frankieireland No it is not a derogatory term, but it does show how shallow and psychotic you are for even writing that. IS calling you paddy also derogatory? What tony bliar did is his own business, no one but HM the Queen can apologise on behalf of the British and indeed, for the famine, there is absolutely noting to apologise for. You and your fellow micks seems to have a hang up about the BBP which is a small "fringe" movement and no one takes seriously. As for the IRA, it is fact .

  • @MrMickroach yes it is derogatory as is paddy, both are offensive. Your government apologised for the famine, my government graciously accepted, end of(you also apologised for the killing of a 12 year old little girl the other day). You're obviously a war crimes apologist, in genocide denial, a monarchist and a BNP supporter, there is therefore no point in trying to reach someone like you through reasoned argument as you just throw back insults because your arguments are so flimsy.

  • @Frankieireland It is not derogatory at all you buffoon. If the adder shot was added so it was mick shit, then that would be. And no, whatever Tony Bliar did, he did it of his own volition, no one, and that means no one can apologise for anything on behalf of the British except HM the Queen. Funny how the little and non essential ROI has never, ever apologised for its collusion with the IRA and 80 years of terror. But then that is how you people live, insular and selfish!

  • Definitely better than the Dubliners.

  • exactly 61,000 views at 6:25 PM November 4th 2010 in Chicago. Can only hope to see more.

  • I moved from Ireland to Scotland when i was a kid i used te think it was a derogative term for a catholic, almost everyday i was called a "FENIAN BASTARD!".

  • @TheYearTwentyTwenty I wish some1 would call me a fenian bastard. I live in deep south ROi & have never had the pleasure. To quote from the life of Brian, "you lucky luckly bastard" Never be ashamed mo chara, you come from 1 of the greatest races 2 have ever graced the earth. Tiocaidh ar la

  • @borledx Don't get me wrong i've never been ashamed or anything. I just wanted to point out the ignorance of some people, how they hate something they have no intention of understanding.

  • @borledx Why would anyone call you a fenian? We all prefer to call you a fuckwit and twat, for that indeed is what you are.

As for great race, tell us one great thing the Irish have ever done for the world/

  • @MrMickroach Knobhead. Chances are the Irish built the road you drive on, it certainly wasn't some cunt from Oxford.

  • @Johnoco66 Looks like you are a twat from Ireland who is ignorant. The roads in Oxfird were almost certainly built by men of Oxford....you stupid cretin

  • @MrMickroach I'm from England. I just don't like gobshites. K

  • @Johnoco66 Best hold your counsel then. Better that we think you are a twat, than you write something and remove all doubt!

  • THE definitive version, I believe. This coming from a die hard Dubliners fan.

  • What they didn't teach you in history class about Germany during World War 2.Germany and the world has been lied to and lied about.

  • sang from the heart. why do crank bigots come and listen to these story songs?

    Clancy Brothers go on boys!

  • @GazaMillar sad knucklescraping loser. feck off!

  • @kilomeister people fighting for something thats already won :L so who's the sad bastards ?

  • Great song: take a look at this group... groups.yahoo.com/group/Irish_Republican_Association

  • i use to have the album Wrap the Green Flag, which had this on it....this was easily the best song. RIP Clancys and Makem.

  • My deepest respect to the Irish freedom fighters. And all that fight against imperialism and colonisation,.

  • Good version, but Ken Curtis & The Sons of The Pioneers have the best version.

  • best Irish song ever by a mile.

  • I remember my grandfather singing this to me as a child along with whiskey in the jar. He is a very proud Irish man. He hasn't been back to Ireland since he left in 1950 at the age of 7.

  • @xxGODDAMNITZxx He should go back as soon as he can. It was wonderful this past june, and july.

  • rip

  • why do good people have to die and the bad live

  • I was sorry to hear of the death of the last of the singing Clancy Brothers who between them did so much to thrill audiences, help the folk revival and inspire new generations of musicians. The song here is a fine rendition of a classic now known to so many people.

  • r.i.p,,, from one carrick man to another,,,

  • @stpaulibhoy1888 nah mate K.A.T

  • Erin forever

    Tiocfaidh ar la!

  • I first came across this song sung by The Jolly Rogers on their Midnight Buffet CD. They do justice to both the Clancy Brothers and the Dubliners. It remains one of my favorite songs.

  • I'm A Proud Fenian Bastard Too :)

    Up The Proud Fenians :)

  • Tiocfaidh ar la!!!!

    A beautiful song... beautifully sung!!

  • Fantastic comment. That must have taken you hours to come up with such an educated and succinct pronouncement, just one slight point that needs making. IT WAS THE BRITS THAT RAN AWAY WITH THEIR TAILS BETWEEN THEIR LEGS.

  • IRELAND FOREVER

    FROM WALES X

  • IM A PROUD FEINIAN BASTARD

  • Great song, great band, great rebellious spirit 26 + 6 = 1.

    Saoirse!!!

  • I had chills up and down my back when the drum was playing

  • I usually think of Tom Clancy as best with loud, boisterous songs, but he does a very nice job with this. Lovely.

  • theres actual a funny story to them trying to sing loud when they did their first show in chicago or new york they only had i microphone so in order for them to be heard they each had to shout

  • ...all thought should be at those that rule-usually the elite of all nations...

  • This song is spoiled only by the drivel hung on it by latterday weepers. Of course the Irish peasant was badly treated. As was the American indian still 50 years later. There were no refugee camps in Ireland - as still in the US and Gaza. Learn your history fully - then weep.

English were among Fenian leaders murdered with the Irish.

I knew the Clancy brothers well and Tommy Makem who joined for a while after Tom Clancy's death. Only Liam Clancy is left now and well into his 70's.

  • The Clancy Brothers remain the best vocal group that Ireland ever produced. I sung their songs and still do everywhere and yes --- I sung them in the Republic That Once Was Vietman.

  • well said my brother,to divide and rule is their only plan!!!

  • I know my history englander i dont need you to fuckin teach it to me

  • Only the sick and the ignorant use bad language to make a point. I had far better things to do when I was 22. Pity you don't young man.

  • Im 25 ... but you are right the language was un-called for and for that i do apologise. But your understanding of Irish history does not seem to be deep enough for you to make comments like the one above

  • I have 40 years on you and have tried to study Irish history for at least that long. I don't know it all but I have a pretty good handle on it. Unfortunately, descendents of some of the wild geese have a slushy view of the great exodus from Ireland over the past 160 years.

Irishmen are entertaining realists who have moved on to build a better life, at home and abroad.

Remarkable people who deserve our admiration.

Other races have suffered also and many still suffer today.

  • @kargwain187 you do ireland proud with that language sir.

  • @mirbuckle Well , if a racist english person wants to start bending the truth to his own agenda and call me all sorts of things i will argue with him .... where as you seem more intent to ignore him and argue with me , why is that ???

  • @kargwain187 classless trash, a disgrace to all Irish along with the 38 monkeys who voted you thumbs up. Only a bafoon has to tell his enemies what he knows.

  • @Enochsawit you are from canada, far removed from the reasons i said what i said. The people who voted thumbs up did so , because they understand why i said what i said. The normal thing to do if you dont understand , is not to shoot off your mouth to attempt to understand first and compilate a responce from a position of knowledge. If you wish to understand i will explain it, even though you have chosen to insult rather than question.

  • @kargwain187 Wrong, My family was burned out of Ardoyne in 1971 when the R.A. were modeling their ethnic cleansing for future conflicts. I left Ireland as a young man. I will always insult sectarian bigotry for it stems from the small minds of small people. Ireland will never be free as long as its so called heros are enslaved to the griefs of the past, along with manipulated half truths. I hate neither loyalist or republican but comments like yours keeps Ireland locked in the 1970's

  • @Enochsawit you can insult me if you like the fact of the matter is , here i am in Ireland, living and breathing it. I will not be insulted and told a false history by a man who claims im less than him because of my nationality and i dont care who disagrees with that. Be they canadian , irish marsian or if their entire lineage was burned out out of ardoyne. I am proud of my country and i will defend it when a foreigner wants to denegrate it with the drivel he wrote.

  • @Enochsawit

The RA were modelling their ethnic cleansing?

I'm not sure what you mean since it was the Loyalists who were conducting progroms and burning out Catholic neighbourhoods resulting in the IrIsh army having to set up field hospitals over the border to cater for the streams of refugees. In fact OIRA were too busy with class struggle and non-sectarian politics that they left the communities at the mercy of the genocide. Some old militants had to arm themselves to defend them, hence PIRA

  • @Cathain78 Try selling that to the protestant families burned out of lower ardoyne in the early 70's. our family being 1 of them. It was the PIRA that was doing the cleansing not the stikies.

  • @Enochsawit shut up sir everybody knows that it was the protestants burning out the catholics...

  • @sadoldemilio - And sad but he's been gone a year and a half now too. Now there is the next generation of Clancys and Makems to carry it on.

  • Oh God, this is NOT Bold Fenian Men. This is Down by the Glenside.

  • I know!!! i cant find Bold Fenian Men anywhere because they keep calling this bold fenian men when its actually down by the glenside! Have you found it on youtube, its one of my favourite songs..

  • our day will come

  • When you consider that in the middle of the Potato Famine the landlords shipped cartloads of WHEAT to England, there can be doubt in my mind that the cause of Fenians and other Irish resistance groups had the moral high ground all right. Henry the second was a fool to invade Ireland, weak resistance or no.

  • im 16 we know all about the brits but they are all dead thosr who done all those things. lets stop the hate ok. tommy from roscommon

  • Fekn Roscommon... you have your shite.

  • @michealealn123

Try and tell Bobby Sands Family this, Some family's were badly affected, And remain Bitter, I have sympathy for them, But I can also see Your Point, Its a delicate subject!

  • There is no question that the British had and still have a hornet's nest on their hands in the form of Ireland and Northern Ireland. And wheh you study the laws of the time and the very fact that in the middle of the Potato Famine cartloads of WHEAT were sent to England for export, there is no question in my mind that the Irish were right to rise up, even if they never won directly.

  • so true, alot of people don't know that and the propaganda machine still goes on in the uk

they never give the history and from history comes the outcome today

  • I'm weeping right now- 'When will they ever learn?' indeed...

  • Tom was lucky after ww2 the stories ive heard well he could have been hung and it wasnt for his singing

  • Give a listen to Pat Sawyer's version of this song that is posted on YouTube.

  • they loved dear old ireland and they never feared danger....i keep every irish man/woman in my daily prayers who died for us in battle/war,whether it be on our soil or foreign!!!!!!!

  • amen

  • This is Tom Clancy in his prime.

"I've heard it said" that Tom was a bit of a Fenian Man after WW2.

  • When I hear this, my heart aches for for family long gone who loved this music.

  • Fantastic song, branded me from childhood, this and Pete Seeger's Ramblin Boy with the Weavers. So strong, so sad. Like the Redwood over the child mass grave in Killarney Cathedral.

  • This is the best version i've heard so far... and i don't expect it to be surpassed..

    Glorio....Glorio...to the bold fenian men....

  • mari sung this years ago?

  • Very nice music.

I just got the CD from David Kincaid, it's pretty good stuff too.

  • brilliant

  • A great song keep them coming, Thanks

  • This song has been confused for a very long time , and incorrectly titled 'Bold Fenian Men'

This one was written by Peadar Karney, where Bold Fenian Men was written by Michael Scanlon,

For more info on this and hundreds of other Irish songs google martindardis [great song anyway]

  • This song is called 'Down By The Glenside' and not Bold Fenian Men , there is another one called Bold Fenian Men

  • You know I was having trouble finding out what to call it. On the CD this is titled as Bold Fenian Men but I know the Dubliners have it as Down by the Glenside, which is why I just put both titles in there.

  • Get the wolfe tones "bold fenian men" off limewire
