0.26 - so journalists were calling Goldacre urging him to say that swine flu was "stuff and nonsense". Looks like they were bang on the money whilst the government wasted ours on vaccines that they are finding hard to give away, and that are now approaching there use-by date. Looks like journalist and the public were right all along, probably down to a mixture of commonsense and what Malcolm Gladwell calls, 'blink'.
Look up, and you might see the point flash by as it goes over your head.
The point was that the media cannot handle the concept of a *potential* threat, which swine flu was. Either it is a threat, and we should all panic and buy more papers, or it is not a threat, and all the experts have been lying. There is apparently no room for anything in the middle.
@Merusdraconis I found your first sentence rude. The point Goldacre was making at 0.26 was that now [some?] journalists are respecting his advice about being accurate when reporting science, they now wanted him to 'lie'. If panicking the public would sell more papers, why did journalists want him to declare it 'stuff and nonsense'?
@macrobius When I was young the government wasted lots of money warning me that traffic was dangerous, while other kids told me running across the road whi;e it's busy was perfectly safe. I ran across the road and nothing happened! Looks like they were bang on the money whilst the government wasted ours on adverts.
@RealFrymaster Not quite analogous. You knew that traffic could be dangerous (and probably didn't need the government to tell you) and avoided it using your own judgement. Any flu can be potentially dangerous if nutrient deficient; so-called swine flu was milder than seasonal flu for which vaccines have a poor record anyway - and that has been recently admitted.
In July 1988 twenty tonnes of aluminium sulphate was put into the drinking water of Camelford. The townsfolk became ill. It would be interesting to hear Bens opinion on this. Might their illness have been merely psychological, and produced by the Homeotoxic Effect? Or does he agree with his colleagues Wessely and White?
@ swinkyuk. I used the Wesselyian's weasel word Homeotoxic, not Homeopathic. Thank you for seeing the point of view is moronic. It happens to be the point of view of Goldacre's psychiatric colleagues Wessely and White.
Equally like them, psychiatrist Ben Goldacre ALWAYS seems to be hinting at psycho-sociogenic mass hysteria. Perhaps he's not the "Scientist" he claims to be, as you have agreed he is the moron. I actually believe the townsfolk of Camelford were poisoned.
I will unsubscribe to the Now Show Podcast for allowing this Establishment Lickspittle airtime; making fun of vaccine-damaged teenaged girls is truly shameful. The point was supposed to be that the Daily Mail gave differing viewpoints on vaccines, but was this the Leader or different journalists opinions?
Shameful: what happened to "Primum no nocere"? 29 September 2009 - "A 14-year-old schoolgirl has died shortly after being given the new cervical cancer vaccine." Telegraph At 3.10 in this video, "12 year old girl paralysed after being given cervical cancer jab" She still is and to add insult to injury her mother is now falsely accused of Munchausens by Proxy. Goldacre is a disgrace to decency.
Actually, one girl dying out of millions is some-what a very common phenomena. Its not like it is ultra-rare in situations such as vaccines. The girl could well have had a violent reaction to a chemical within the vaccine, and therefore it would not be down to the vaccine itself.
The 'Bad Science' is being selective with evidence. In his book he links detox with a disreputable party trick of a foot spa but disregards beneficial detox methods such as coffee enemas that are in no less a tome than the Merck manual. What I object to here is ridicule of tragic human stories. Where is the logic in this: if someone dies after a vaccine it is because of an underlying condition; If someone dies after contracting flu it is because of the flu?
Ben Goldacre is a very clever establishment shill. He could well cause cancer by promoting Bad Science (yes, it is a double entendre). He is not a GP but a researcher at King's College London where he obtained an MA in philosophy. He is chummy with other former quackbusters.
Look at the work of people like Francisco Contreras oasisofhopeDOTcom , Chris Woollams canceractiveDOTcom and Phillip Day credenceDOTorg and read Martin Walker's free eBook 'Cultural Dwarfs' for more info on Ben Goldacre slingshotpublicationsDOTcom/dwarfsDOThtml
Actually, Ben Goldacre was once a researcher in Clinical Neuroscience at King's, but is actually now a full time qualified doctor working for the NHS. He also has a Doctorate, and also a seperate Masters degree in Philosophy. Just because somebody happens to have a masters in Philosophy does not therefore mean that their Doctorate becomes invalidated. Also, what is this Bad Science you believe he is promoting? and what-of cancer?
I based my comment on his statement, "If I said I had a PhD from Cambridge, US or UK (I have neither), it would only take you a day to find it." (on Gillian McKeith) He may well have been awarded a doctorate since, but 'doctor', like 'nutritionist' is not a protected term. Oxford University, where Goldacre studied, award bachelor degrees (BM BCh ) in medicine, so my presumption was that calling Ben 'doctor' was common parlance for GP.

lying sack of shit.
Most cancer is caused by viruses in vaccines like SV40.
Bayer ships AIDS in their hemophiliac "medcine"
Baxter ships out live avian flu in their flu vaccine.
AIDS and polio CAUSED by vaccine.
Swine flu not even a fraction as deadly as regular flu.
This lying buffoon wants you all to die early.
