Just a beautiful album that should really be mandatory listening for anyone who considers themself a fan of music.
@BusyB0X The song Roy Orbison song was called Only the Lonely but a completely different song. One of Roy's best, it was recorded I think in 1960 and was the first hit for him in Britain before Pretty Woman hit the charts..

"Only The Lonely" was also one of Frank's best albums, and I bought the original in 1958 and listened to it then! It is a haunting song about love lost, and the "lonely feelings and heartache" after such an event!

Fuck you @theartofdoom. He is simply implying that all music talks about now is getting High and getting bitches. Now shut your mouth and go bother someone else.
@JackOfZeroTrades Such ignorance, to state a thing like that! It is true that the current wave of neo-hip hop focuses its lyrics mainly on said topics, although if you somehow draw the conclusion that all modern music is this way, you must be either retarded or haven't given new music a chance. You have most likely been listening to mainstream music radio stations or caught a glimse of MTV, and then decided to base your opinion on that.
Would like me to point you to some nice modern music?
Wasn't this recorded about the time he was tangling with Ava Gardener - the one woman ho couldn't posses? This song, in fact the whole albumn is a total masterpiece.
@sfden50 Yep. This iconic song is from one of the first "theme" albums. I think she inspired this and most of the songs on the album. Ava broke his heart; maybe they broke one another's hearts. But agreed--a masterpiece.
well im 13 and i cant get enough of frank sinatra! hes my idol! this is the first time ive heard this song and i think its desperately beautiful. although i think his 'watertown' lp deserves so much more recognition! im still a bit of a newcomer but i think that the 50's and especially the late 60's were best for his ballads and really serious material-like this. thanks for posting!
@MrFashionized Well there are quite a few stories about him behaving like, for a lack of a better term, an asshole. But that doesn't mean he was a bad person, though.
@thinkorthwim69 if you can't say something positive, just shut the hell up... this man had more talent in a single hair, than you have in all of your body.

@jefflevin7 i've been a fan for only about 4 months, i can honestly say he was a tremendous artist, and this is my, if not this then blue moon, favorite songs of his.
I must confess for many years I never cared for this song. I thought it was contrived and phony. I thought it was just a "throw away tune" by Sammy Cahn & Van Husen. The music score is not available anywhere. Not even the publisher in L.A. carries it. I do have the karoake version which I sing all the time. I have grown to love this song over the last three years. Now, if I could only locate a chart for the tune.
'Only the Lonely,' 'No One Cares' and 'Where Are You' are at least 3 albums Dad should buy for the 14 yr. old writing about another Sinatra song. He's a fan and I congratulate him on his ability to relate to art that is truly moving. Frank was essentially an actor and he treated ballads like short stories which he interpreted with dramatic and musical integrity. He was the great poet of the last century.
@MrRa77oR What the fuck is with this comment. Women were not all bitches? Are you implying that now they are? What the hell is wrong with you, you chauvinistic fuck?
@halomanalden What does this mean"hating on this person",i only know old fashioned language,i've been drinking also but i still dont know.Just enjoy the music.
A perfect opening to one of the greatest recordings of all time--I'd never heard this song prior to getting the CD, but it is remarkably beautiful and poignant and of course magnificently sung by Sinatra.
FRANK SINATRA SINGS FOR ONLY THE LONELY!!. I LOVE THAT TITLE..I CAN LISTEN TO THE ALBUM AND FEEL THAT FRANK IS SINGING IT JUST FOR ME. BOTH SINATRA'S AND NELSON RIDDLES FAVOURITE ALBUM THEY WORKED ON.
Lord Francis, the phrasing, the breath-control, the flow. The Man. This is Mr. Sinatra's most minor-key tune. Around 1960 only Tony Bennett, of his rough peers, could have hoped to sing it.
@stopglobalswarming you are one negative person, and a very angry one I might add.Tell me why are you here? What is your purpose? What about FRANK.Do you have anything to say about the beautiful music of Frank Sinatra or are you one of those people who look for the most unlikely place to spew your poison. Why don't you grow up and listen to the greatest singer ever.It just might calm you down and make you more human.Come on give it a try.Frank did not like bigotry.
@beautifulchrist12 I have liked this music for decades. I just think it was sad that Frank loved the black radicals and lent to the notion that jazz was "subversive".
@stopglobalswarming - Everyone in their right mind back then supported the black "radicals", the ones posturing for equal rights. They weren't radical by today's standards. If you were pals with a black guy, and you had a gig in Vegas, and you could walk in the front entrance and he was forced to go through the kitchen, you might become a bit sympathetic yourself. And yeah, jazz WAS subversive, it was slightly countercultural, that didn't make it Communist, just "food for thought"
Mr. Sinatra took songs that others recorded and made them his own...no other singer came close to doing this...His passion, love, despair for Ava explodes throughtout this song and album. His music makes me feel like he did in such a great way like no one else. The best ever!!!!!
Perhaps Sinatra's Magnum Opus. Certainly Cahn & Van Heusen's. I have it on karaoke, but never had the nerve to sing it in public - there's absolutely no rhythmic cues to come in on, you have to depend completely on the chord structure and the lengths of the holds. Nearly impossible. Plus the fact, what a downer!
@jimspy1001 Wow, I would love to have this on Karaoke. It's one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums. I also love "Willow Weep For Me" along with "What's New" and "Blues In The Night". The "Only The Lonely" album is a great musical achievement in my opinion.
I do a singing show and sing "Luck Be A Lady", "My Kind Of Town", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "Come Fly With Me", "I've Got The World On A String", "Love And Marriage", "One For My Baby" and several other Sinatra songs.
@jimspy1001 no cues just means you come in when you want! haha go where the music moves you, but don't forget to count the meter so you and the accompaniment come in together. Should be a cinch.
@outtaker - Trust me. It's not. I think part of the problem is that the karaoke version is not quite timed the same way as the original. Add that to the fact that the original was arranged with "singer's discretion" in mind to begin with, and you find yourself hanging in mid-air half the time and coming in late the other half.
I'm a professional Frank Sinatra tribute artist (retired), and this is the one song I won't attempt in public.
@jimspy1001 Well it's then a matter of word placement and strict knowledge of the rhythm and notes; kind-of like an recitative accompagnato in the opera form. You cue the music from setting the vocal rhythm with the consonants before the beat and releasing clearly for the orchestra when you finish the musical phrase. No music is impossible to master, I tell you. This singer's discretion marking is similar to a col canto/colla voce marking in opera, and is great for personal interpretation!
@outtaker - Imagine you've sung along to a recording of Caruso doing Vesti La Giubba for 20 years. You know it backwards and forwards, and can always come in exactly when Enrico does. You know how long the orchestra rests while he's doing the "laughing" part. Now you get a karaoke version and try it on your own...only you find that the orchestra doesn't rest for quite as long as on the original. You have to undo 20 years of familiarization, because YOU ARE FORCED TO FOLLOW THE ORCHESTRA!
@outtaker (contd) - It's even more difficult with this piece because there's a rest in practically every stanza. In the phrase, "the songs I know..." you have to time it so that the orchestra comes in exactly under "know." There IS no singer's discretion because we're talking about a recording! If it were live, it would be different, but recorded music doesn't listen to the singer! It doesn't care! Yes, I suppose I could master it...but out of respect for the original I'm won't bother.
@jimspy1001 About you previously saying that you have the karaoke version of Only the Lonely. And about me hoping you can send it on my e-mail address at andrei.cocoranu@yahoo.com
My grandfather always listened to Mr. Sinatra; in fact, I think he's his favorite singer. I've been listening to different eras of music(mainly 50's jazz to prepare myself for university), and I'm thankful I remembered to listen to his man.

@beautifulchrist12 I like the music a lot. Too bad he was a commie.

@stopglobalswarming - But...like...he wasn't. I don't remember any commies endorsing Nixon or Reagan...
jimspy1001 1 year ago
@beautifulchrist12 I have liked this music for decades. I just think it was sad that Frank loved the black radicals and lent to the notion that jazz was "subversive".
stopglobalswarming 1 year ago
@stopglobalswarming - Everyone in their right mind back then supported the black "radicals", the ones posturing for equal rights. They weren't radical by today's standards. If you were pals with a black guy, and you had a gig in Vegas, and you could walk in the front entrance and he was forced to go through the kitchen, you might become a bit sympathetic yourself. And yeah, jazz WAS subversive, it was slightly countercultural, that didn't make it Communist, just "food for thought"

Popular music as Art!!
saintcruzin 1 year ago

Plus the fact, what a downer!
jimspy1001 1 year ago 12
@jimspy1001 Wow, where can i get a copy of the karaoke version?
sdpadrefan 1 year ago 4
@jimspy1001 - email me at jimspeiser@yahoo.com, this thing won't let me post a URL.
jimspy1001 1 year ago
@jimspy1001 Wow, I would love to have this on Karaoke. It's one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums. I also love "Willow Weep For Me" along with "What's New" and "Blues In The Night". The "Only The Lonely" album is a great musical achievement in my opinion.
I do a singing show and sing "Luck Be A Lady", "My Kind Of Town", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "Come Fly With Me", "I've Got The World On A String", "Love And Marriage", "One For My Baby" and several other Sinatra songs.
platinumplusenter 1 year ago
@jimspy1001 no cues just means you come in when you want! haha go where the music moves you, but don't forget to count the meter so you and the accompaniment come in together. Should be a cinch.
outtaker 1 year ago
@outtaker - Trust me. It's not. I think part of the problem is that the karaoke version is not quite timed the same way as the original. Add that to the fact that the original was arranged with "singer's discretion" in mind to begin with, and you find yourself hanging in mid-air half the time and coming in late the other half.
I'm a professional Frank Sinatra tribute artist (retired), and this is the one song I won't attempt in public.
jimspy1001 1 year ago
@jimspy1001 Well it's then a matter of word placement and strict knowledge of the rhythm and notes; kind-of like an recitative accompagnato in the opera form. You cue the music from setting the vocal rhythm with the consonants before the beat and releasing clearly for the orchestra when you finish the musical phrase. No music is impossible to master, I tell you. This singer's discretion marking is similar to a col canto/colla voce marking in opera, and is great for personal interpretation!
outtaker 1 year ago
@outtaker - Imagine you've sung along to a recording of Caruso doing Vesti La Giubba for 20 years. You know it backwards and forwards, and can always come in exactly when Enrico does. You know how long the orchestra rests while he's doing the "laughing" part. Now you get a karaoke version and try it on your own...only you find that the orchestra doesn't rest for quite as long as on the original. You have to undo 20 years of familiarization, because YOU ARE FORCED TO FOLLOW THE ORCHESTRA!
jimspy1001 1 year ago
@outtaker (contd) - It's even more difficult with this piece because there's a rest in practically every stanza. In the phrase, "the songs I know..." you have to time it so that the orchestra comes in exactly under "know." There IS no singer's discretion because we're talking about a recording! If it were live, it would be different, but recorded music doesn't listen to the singer! It doesn't care! Yes, I suppose I could master it...but out of respect for the original I'm won't bother.

@jimspy1001 A ballad like this, sung rubato, requires a live band that follows the vocalist. Yes, karaoke would be very difficult.

My grandfather always listened to Mr. Sinatra; in fact, I think he's his favorite singer. I've been listening to different eras of music(mainly 50's jazz to prepare myself for university), and I'm thankful I remembered to listen to his man.
