  • subtitles? please? =(

  • His ghost notes are so tasty!

  • Funny thing, I always learn a lot from Gavin's videos as a guitarist and it always inspires me to try new things.

  • Complete Genius! Inspiring

    and yeah

    Fucking awesome bass kick

And Overall tones are better than orgasms

  • Genius

  • That song at 5:40 he is talking about is Half Light, most probably.

  • 3:18 DUGGAH DUGGAH DUGGAH DUGGAH DOM DOM DUGGAH DUGGAH BOSH! haha sweet.

  • Great advice for any "flashy" drummer. :)

  • I always wondering why he did the who fast drumming subtle thing at the beginning of Sound of Muzak but didnt do it when the vocals started.

  • I love how it sounds like hes out of breath after playing something slow and simple, and then he plays something insane and its like he hasnt broken a sweat

  • His sonor kit sounds FUCKING PHENOMENAL!

  • Thank u mt. Harrison! Greetings from a bassist

  • what an inspiration!

  • He explains in 7 minutes what it took me to realize three years

  • SOOO LOUD

  • Buddy Rich: The Godwin's Law of drummer videos.

  • Well my eyes are pretty stuffed so I find myself squinting due to the keratoconus in both eyes and reattached ritina in my left eye which renders that eye pretty much useless. And I'm always fighting the black dog. These Technical musos have great parents and great genes so in a way they are cheating.

  • Like playing sport instead of music.

  • He has alot of "conceptual and technical ideas yes.But no musical ideas.

Technicality is very short term to me.I go wow that was awesome but it gets very boring very quickly.

  • @Jellybeantiger are you deaf? or did you just not watch the whole video??? and have you neither listened Porcupine Tree? Maybe if you research a little and pay attention you will realize Gavin is a complete drummer, musicality and technique.

  • @Jellybeantiger I totally disagree with that comment. Gavin is one of the most creative musicians around.

  • Porcupine Tree aint no Genesis.Music is more technical drumming wise but doesn't hit the heart like Phil's drumming sorry.

  • Dig diga diga digs bosh

    or something

    that cracked me up

  • WTB ... Gavin a wireless headset!

  • @KarateMastR57 Most of the people I have played with are self taught and only learned by ear and never learned how to read and write music. It's not that they are crappy musicians, they just never learned to count and that is very frustrating.

  • @COLUMBINE1818 Buddy Rich never read music and was the best drummer around. He come way before Harrison and Donati before that.

  • @Jellybeantiger There's an exception to every rule, but seriously who do you know that plays at the level of Buddy Rich? This day and age it's to your benefit to learn to read music and count. Just watch the Dream Theater auditions and all of them count and read music.

  • @Jellybeantiger I can't listen to buddy Rich. It's probably his tinny kit or his ridiculous speed but I don't find it very entertaining to listen to. I can listen to Gavin all day. :)

  • GOAT

  • That Ride cymbal gave me an erection

  • "King Krimson"?

  • 3:20

Mutes the crash cymbal with out playing it... brilliant.

  • @Philzwhodrumz Drumming is in the blood he can't help it! ;D

  • @Philzwhodrumz "Here comes a chorus: dugga-dugga doggu-duggo bom-bom dugga-dom bosch!" *mutes cymbal*

  • @LavAzza1982 Congratulations on posting a longer version of my comment.

  • @Philzwhodrumz muscle memory. when you've been doing something all your life, it becomes instinctive.

  • he´s the most interesting clinic-guy to listen too

  • The most inspiring drummer since Neil Peart.

  • I saw Gavin in concert back when he played with Renaissance (early 80s)...he's a great drummer...I agree with aspects of what he expressed here...it can be nice when each musician in a band learns to be sensitive to what the other musicians are playing...it's about creating good music...great discussion, Gavin...

  • I'm a guitarist, but this is going to help me so much programming drums, he's so right, less is more so often

  • WHO dislikes this?????

  • LOL @ 0:39 "...I've lost the will to live by about sound 200."

  • What an incredible snare drum sound!

  • Thanks Gavin! You are a god!

  • his voice sounds like a cross between steve merchant and ricky gervais :D

  • That is such a killer snare sound.

  • This guy knows his shit!

  • Gavin=GOD

  • what the guy below me said. i just learned so much in 8 minutes. gavin harrison just won me over with this video.

  • i just learned so much in less than 8 minutes.. wow

  • stak tak ditabou hum pf !

  • this is one of those videos that every drummer should watch at least once... i feel like it made my playing a lot more musical

  • Hottest fucking drummer alive.

  • ..."to get the idea"...TO GET THE IDEA???? Oh my God! He's a Monster!

  • damn when he suggests the 16 hits with the snare instead of hitting 16s on the ride.... brutal!

  • Excellent vid. Should be mandatory for al beginning drummers! No, for all drummers!

  • wow

  • I think he might be talking about "Dark Matter" at 5:40

  • @RedBarchetta47

I think he was rather talking 'bout "Half Light"

  • @ledzep1994 Yeaahhh, that's the one. Thanks

  • Eloquent as ever. All drummers should hear this. Btw, if you can find the recording of GH playing with Level42 it's quite an eye-opener, especially if you're familiar with the songs and the way Phil Gould played them!

  • its true what gav said, it must be from the heart without count, feel is everything without feel there is nothing.

its not what you do its what you dont do, the point is kiss( keep it simple stupid)

a great mantra for ant aspiring drummer, keep it simple but from the heart. no pun intended but the rest will flow

cheers drummers for reading my analogy

tight skins and godbless you all x

    dave jepson

  • I don't understand what curling is? Is this a common term?

  • @Fortificatio its essentially a term he made up to visualize and be creative with fills. He is saying that you know where you are going to end up and where certain hits are but not what the finished product is. Curling refers to a basic shape of fill and be able to put pieces in it on the fly. A very cool way to think about it. Hope that helped!

  • This guy is like James Cameron for drummer. So many beautiful concepts in his mind.

  • God spoke

  • He is a REALLY creative genious...=)

LOOK AT WHAT HE POINTS OUT AT 5:55 :NOT TO REGARD THE SONG AS A DRUMMER BUT AS A PRODUCER.

" Drummers are expecting the oportunity to play licks in between "jaaja that`s a great point of view..to help the entire song and not your ego as a musician beu what u be: bassist..drummer .guitar player... Love this man!

  • 2:57 FUCK. Instantly Favorited.

  • And now you probably know why nobody disliked this.

  • god, Im not even a drummer, but his playing is so immediately recognizable.

  • Could listen to this guy talking for hours, he's really inspiring...

  • I am not a drummer either, but I could listen Gavin talk about drums all day long-Adorable, Genuine and Genius. Adorable Too :) !

  • 2:38 tell that to Lars Ulrich^^

  • @SuperGorak I think Lars would more than less agree. Note the drastic difference in style from 'Justice' to the 'Black Album'. The BA was arguably their most popular but toned down drum production to that point. Metallica mostly was originally a favorite of musicians and punkers and hardcore metal heads. Then they went undeniably mainstream with a more basic sound yet somehow both Lars and Metallica as a whole simultaneously maintained and changed their signature. Simplified sound made that.

  • @jtnoodle Don't take me too serious :)

Basically I know nothing about Lars' work on the Albums. I just know his live playing.

Also I like how people say that he's bad because he doesn't show any inventive playing and the others who glorify him for that he doesn't use the double bass drum all the time.

I'm just a fan of this little feud

  • I don't even play drums and this is enlightening.

  • his drums sound is the best

  • wow no dislikes!

  • @rottinq yeah, that's because only proper musicians come to this man! =p

  • don't know why this always comes to my mind when i watch harrisons videos ...but this should be Rated A... for Awesome

  • his kit is soooooooooooooooo punchy! epic

  • With a drummer like Gavin behind me it would inspire me to write so many riffs. Unbelievable sound and choice of hits. Wow!

  • porcupine tree is like 10x better than Dream Theater...

  • @naooki Ö!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @naooki They're both great. I like both of them. they're both prog metal and its hard to say one is better than the other.

  • the best drum kit sound ever. and the best drummer with a lot of interesting ideas and point of view.

  • Love the quote at the end. "As a bass player all I want the drummer to do is to play in time." As a Drummer I want the guitar and bass player to be able to tell me what time it is so they can show me that they understand what I'm playing. I've played with a bunch of people who could come up with cool riffs and when I'm creating a drum part I ask them what time it's in and they say "i don't know." Everyone needs to count.

  • @COLUMBINE1818 NOTE: I am not bashing you personally nor starting a fight. it's just that how i feel about this is that it is preference and not a need. Feels like a religion, like preaching christianity by saying everyone needs to count. Personally, I play what I like to hear, be it porcupine tree-esque or dubstep or dance. If playing with mates, we use trial and error to come up with the pieces of a song. I like mistakes in a song too because life would be boring with too much organization.

  • @yumberri Whatever sinks your titanic dude. It just irks me when I play with people who either don't count or have no idea what time it's in. Even if you don't know initially, you should be able to play it once or twice through and go oh yeah it's 11/8 for example. It's beneficial to everyone to count and know the time. If you're just jamming for fun then you can relax a bit more.

  • @COLUMBINE1818 the snare on 2 and 4 isnt creating drum parts lol..

  • @DAlva630 You missed my point entirely.

  • *bows*

  • That kit sounds like gold.

  • I played 3:19 over and over again haha

  • wow. tell me GC does not carry a wireless headset mic? On the other hand, great point of view.

  • Best sounding drum kit known to man.

  • terrible microphone. cannot play & talk at the same time

  • Who didn´t know what modern rock sound is....... just this! :)

  • honestly I only like select porcupine tree stuff, and while I dig some of the concepts of the vocals and he sings his style well, it's definitely not my favorite. However, being a drummer, I have to listen to everything gavin ever does.

  • Underrated? Porcupine Tree? I think people think they are very skilled, but just don't like the music, which I don't understand, but, their loss.

  • This guy is pretty much jesus in my book. Once I saw him live with Porcupine tree, I crapped my pants. I'm still crapping my pants to this point... I started crapping my pants 3 years ago then pretty much? by far my most favorite drummer of all time!

  • @BGuss I agree, I was a little concerned when he started with PT, but after one tune knew it was the right choice. His drumming with OSI on the 'Blood' album is amazing too.

  • Gavin, will you drumy me ?

  • great lesson!

  • Nice to see all likes. This man is awesome... what a drummer and what a musical mind!

  • Gavin's ride cymbal sounds incredible.

  • I play bass and drums too!

  • Great, amazing and perfect.

  • Ya know what I mean...?

  • thanks for an awesome video, loved it!

  • anyone know where i can find the rest?

  • wow...it felt like it was only a 2 min video!!! i learned so much!!!

  • any dislike... this is what he deserves!

    such fantastic, his drumming!

  • Gavin is a genius. Best drummer there is. His kit sounds absolutely amazing.

  • Gavin's "ballad" pattern is more interesting than most people's craziest fills.

    And more musical.

  • genius

  • I WAS THERE!!!!!! :D

  • @danevati nice ;)

what other songs has he played?

  • so insightful. gavin is one of the best alive.

  • He's so... perfect.

  • Diggadigga duggadugga bombom duggadom BOSH!

  • I need to stop thinking like a drummer, Damn

  • this guy inspires me so much. everytime I watch gavin play I feel like going and playing new stuff on my set. I feel like everything about him is perfect-technique, chops, musicality, sound, etc. easily in my top 3 favorite drummers, along with jojo mayer and travis orbin.

  • @TtAbrams You should check out Benny Greb if you like musical drummers that add a lot of subtleties to their playing.

  • @PoeticJustice05 In my opinion, Benny's the greatest drummer alive. :)

  • @idrumfofun1100 He makes a great argument.

  • @idrumfofun1100 Totally agree. Just like Gavin he blends technicality and musicality effortlessly... although I personally prefer Benny's playing, they're both incredible.

  • Most excellent!

  • "when to play fills"

ALL THE FUCKIN TIME!! Fuckin METAL.

  • clean drumming

  • THIS GUY ACTUALLY KNOWS HOW TO BE A GOOD DRUMMER! THEY FUCKING LISTEN!

  • Interesting video.

  • His bass drum sounds so big, deep, and amazing in the house!!!

  • WOW!!!!!! JOJO MAYER.....GAVIN HARRISON?! ALL WE NEED NOW IS MORE NICKO MCBRAIN AN BRANN DAILOR!!!

  • @punkrockdrummer1990 can't believe you put those last two with the first two. you're daft, bro.

  • @stylerprofyler nicko mcbrain is very underated,...he has chops but he plays for the music, id say hes my fave drummer even tho hes not to the same technical standard as gavin or jojo,...he just has this quality in his drums parts that i connect with check our where eagles dare,....funny how everyone covers it wrong ud be shocked how hard it is to play RIGHT :P

  • I love this guy!

  • Master.

  • Another classic GH Video! Thank you man!

  • Wow, this guy is awesome.. I feel the same way

  • Gavin's more than 'just a drummer' - he's transcended into drummer/producer territory, that's why everything he touches turns to gold... I play guitars and not drums, but he's the ONE professional I respect the most!

  • i alt+tabbed and thought ricky gervais was playing drums. they sound similar.

  • Please join my baaaaaaand

  • I want his snare >.<

  • He does unbelievable things on Anesthetize. The best rock drummer for me.

  • Such an amazing session and they couldnt give him a head microphone? Poor Gavin <3

  • awesome drum sound!!!

  • I think Gavin and Christopher Nolan are twins

  • One of the most beautiful drum sets, and one of the bast drummers EVER!!!

  • I understand these are different bands and also dislike getting into the old immature comparation diatribe, but: I hope Dream Theater's new drummer watches this video and decides tu put some of these ideas in practice, at any level. (If he currently doesn't do so - hope he does -) ...and his own ideas, of course.

"Less is more" would've been a good and short video description :P

Well done Gavin. I'm completely in accordance with you.

  • really fuck WMG and all the other shit fuckers.we´re not here to steal anything,we are here to have a good time and to learn something

  • Oh mai gawd that kit is fucking Beautiful

  • I was there, this was at the Guitar Center in Hollywood. I wish these sort of places that post his clinic footage would post ALL of it. This stuff is like crack to me. I wish the play-a-longs would work.

  • His two playalong videos from the same session are blocked by WMG for copyright reasons. Anything you can do about that, GuitarCenter?

  • Ahhh, I want more!!! This guy's got a lot of great insight and conceptual ideas.

  • This guy is like, the smartest man I have ever heard talk about music haha. Great perspective.

  • Porcupine Tree are so underrated.

  • @ChucklesMginty They are not "underrated", they are invisible to the mass... like most of the prog bands.

But when you know them, I guess they are in your top 10.

  • @ChucklesMginty *is? or prcupine tree's musicians?

  • @ChucklesMginty

LOL Porcupine tree are definitely not underrated. Just not very well known. Big distinction.

  • @ChucklesMginty Actually I agree but I think that with their potential they can do something even better...

  • @ChucklesMginty who cares. Great band doesn't give a shit too much on rating.

  • What type of drumset is he using?!?!?!?

  • @TheFlight999 It is a Sonor SQ2 kit! Very expensive!

  • @TheFlight999 Sonor

  • @TheWho852 thanks that set sounds amazing

  • 20" K Ride

  • He makes such great points! I love this!

  • Normally, when I hear this accent, I prepare to be robbed at knife point.

but this gentlemen is a dead set incredible drummer.
