Because these are pre-release versions of Android - work was still underway on Android, and the visual look was changed multiple times until the final version on the G1 and Magic.

boy that is a slow OS.. Even Windows Mobile (which is a doog) is faster. Nothing new here, why would new developers jump on this platform where there is one with already over 40MM users?
You have no freaking clue what you're talking about dude, the Android OS is based on the linux platform and when implemented properly into a phone, It's blazing fast.
u sound just like the microsoft fans that push windows mobile. I have the same Touch HTC phone with Windows Mobile, and its veeeery slow.. installed Android, and its muuuuuch sloooooower..
And this are facts, no rage fans from either side telling me about it.
On the OS itself for the phones, the first Android phone will be released later this year on the T-mobile network, called the HTC Dream. It'll be the first, and itll be the only phone out at the time that will truly support the android platform.
Things like this are people basically hacking their phones to run things that they were not designed for, hence why it's so slow on this phone. On something that it was designed for, it'd be much faster, and much more usable.
I work at a T-mobile exclusive dealer and I can personally say that the android software is freaking kickass, and TONS faster than windows mobile phones.
Please do more searching before you make a comment about the OS which you know nothing about.. or at least visit the android developer community.
It's an amazing piece of software and on the linux platform, it can only succeed being faster, longer battery life (Linux has less of a drain on the OS, so less drain on the batt) and more effecient.
don't mean to be disrespectful, but c'mon, the important thing here is the experience.. the win phone is a corporate "thing", the android phone is consumer, so your experience in the latter is more battery intensive. I would not be surprised if the battery on the Dream actually runs out faster on android than windows, due to the fact on how people use the phone.
If you work for Google, fine, push the darn thing, but if you are really open handset, then you should really be open minded as well.
The experience? What, the experience that android WASN'T designed for? Excuse me, but you are just plain stupid. How can you expect android will work fine on a WINDOWS FREAKING DEVICE? It's like trying to put WINDOWS on a FREAKING PPC MAC!! The HTC Dream (which is DESIGNED for ANDROID) is now out, check out some videos of it and you'll see it's BLAZING FAST -- doesn't even COMPARE to WINDOWS! Just like LINUX on a PC...
its a slow os cuz that phone can not handle it... the i-phone started out slow a litle but annoying as hell firmware updates fixed that fast but the android will run very quickly on upcomming phones like the HTC Dream P.S. Windows Mobile kicks ass
I really like the Touch Dual, it's a shame that the current model makes you choose between 3G and WiFi. As for Android... my friend, your definition of "works" seems exceedingly generous indeed.
Its not even half of the OS looks good though had a go on my touch dual. the navigation is alot better than win mobile. This is going to be a real iphone competitor now and knowing XDA developers they will dump the HTC Dreams Rom and port it to other HTC phones.

this happens with some appilications, sometimes you "run out of memory" while you have much memory left, soft reset will fix
