  • who sung the song for the intro

  • Comment removed

  • I think Bill Champlin did.

  • omg! i used to watch this show with my gram ^_^

  • @Cynnbadd25 me too... those were the days, (pun intended!)

  • @rowdy8888 yes they were! i often wish for a time machine *sigh

  • love all episodes

  • This is a great show. Better than probably anything on television now. I can't stand TV because it's all trash.

  • @Noremorse10 Amen to that! These shows were well written and had likable characters.

  • For the person that asked, AFAIK, the train featured in the opening credits is Amtrak's Crescent (years ago called the "Southern Crescent", run by the Southern Railway until 1979). It still runs today between New York and Lousiana with newer locomotives, Amfleet and Viewliner cars. Beautiful, comfortable train that's still well patronized. Runs over 100mph speeds between NY & Washington and good stretches of 80mph running between Washington and New Orleans.

  • Thumbs up for 7th heaven!

  • i wish it was on DVD.

  • William "Bill" Champlin sang this, and he did an awesome job!

  • that has to be one of the best theme songs ever

  • Sweet was gone all the sudden he was good ...

  • Did Jean Stapleton ever make a guest appearance on this show?

  • i miss the show. i would intenionally miss school to watch it cause it was that great to me and i didnt mind watching the reruns. they should make shows like this now a days.

  • i miss this program so much.i miss all the ones that made it a big hit. Carroll made this show. i wish more tv stations would show this show!

  • Some of the shots in the opening sequence (if not all of them, I can't tell) were filmed in Hammond, Louisiana. I LOVE that old train station!

  • One of the BEST TV shows EVER made!

  • I still enjoy watching this show in the reruns. Quality like this is rare nowadays. I still wish the remaining cast would get together for a reunion show. Bubba, Parker, Sweet, Corbin, Dee, Darnell, Doc Robb, Officer Randy, and Ron "Sherriff McCombs" Culbreth.

  • @ACLTony cant forget Althea Tibbs and Harriet DeLong

  • @Mattea68 - Yes, you're right. This show had such a well balanced cast. One thing that puzzled me was Geoffery Thorne's departure. Did a good job as Officer Sweet. I've searched the web but haven't found any info as to why he left the show and where he went.

  • @ACLTony i often wondered the same thing

  • @ACLTony I'm right here.

  • @dreamnasium -Hi Mr. Thorne. Truly a pleasure reading a response from you. Good to read of your accomplishments as a professional writer & contributions you've made to sci-fi shows, including one of my favorites, ST Voyager. My family and I are still fans of In the Heat of the Night and always enjoyed your realistic portrayal of Officer Sweet, especially in the episode with Ed Ames (from Daniel Boone) as a dangerous racist sherriff. If you don't mind my asking, why did you leave the show?

  • @ACLTony hmm. Well. The short answer is it was time for me to be a writer instead. =)

  • @dreamnasium- Glad that it was a successful career move as your work has shown that. Do you stay in touch with your former cast members (Alan Autry, Crystal Fox, Denise Nicholas, Dave Hart). Understandably you were actors doing a job, but in watching the show one gets the impression that as a group the cast seemed to have a reputable, family-like bond inspite of the personal problems that cropped up. Of course problems that any human being can have.

  • Take me back foreal and was an Enjoyable Show. I dont even think i ever seen this on Dvd yet? ...Nice Upload

  • I just had to come back to listen to this...I remember watching it in the 90's, I used to hate it because it wasnt cartoons. lol...But i remember i always LOVED the Intro!

  • I miss this TV show

  • Watched this with my grandma in the 90's...good shows like this are hard to come by these days.

  • "IN THE - HEATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT - OFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF THE NIGHTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!'

Even though I only watched some of the show, childhood memories brought me back here.

  • Pawnstars!

  • The theme song always leaves me feelin' great- perfect therapy after a bad day!

  • Man I love those police cars :)

  • @ooSicknesSoo Yeah. Those are my favorite (and what I hear from many old timers) they loved the old police cars. The Chevy Caprice's and Dodge Diplomats.

  • i luv this intro

    it`s so EPIC

  • Boy does this bring back memories. I always went to my grandparents' house after elementary school back in the 90's and my grandpa, brother and I would always watch this show. I could still recall how the song went.

  • R.I.P. Carroll, Howard, and Hugh. We miss all of you very much.

  • @wallexus Also, the lady from the dinner I can't think of her name but she died back in 2008. So sad and what a great show.

  • Quincy Jones wrote the song, but Bill Champlin sung the song

  • This one of the best shows ever put on tv. WHERE ARE THE DVDS?

  • I agree, can't find DVDs anywhere.

  • @qg300 Me neither I have looked everywhere for DVDs. MeTV where I live runs a one hour episode from Monday through Friday but that's it. I remember when it use to come on for 2 hours on TNT and WGN.

  • WGN still runs the show, they show it on WGN america at 11:00 a.m chicago time

  • i like this show. it needs to be on dvd

  • Great show indeed! They need to put these on DVD! All seasons......

  • This is my favorite theme song of any show ever. That guy sang that song lol! I like it ever since I was 4 or 5 yrs old.

  • Man I was only like 3 when this show came on. I was too young to understand shows like this back then but now its all different

  • and Carroll O'connor aka Chief Gillipsie...R.I.P.

  • It shows how wide a range Carroll O'Connor had. He went from playing bigot Archie Bunker to Bill Gillespie, who was married to a Black woman in the series.

That couldn't have happened in the movie, which came out when several states still had laws against interracial marriage.

Also, in response to your other post about Howard Rollins, I agree.

Fortunately, to me, Howard/Rollins makes up half of the Phillies infield! ;-)

  • R.I.P. Howard Rollins aka Virgil Tibbs

  • In the Heat of the Night comes on WGN America @ 11:00 AM (channel 307 if u hav Direct tv)

i watch this show every day i luv Bubba and Jamison

  • Why cant they mke intros like that anymore ?

  • @kerrykop I dont know but they should!!!!! I love listening to this intro!!!

  • Classic Ford Crown Vic LTD.

  • Great show on a great station.

Sung and written by Bill Champlin who is best know with the band Chicago. He also wrote hits for George Benson and Earth, Wind, and Fire.

  • Um, actually, Champlin only performed the song. It was really written by Quincy Jones and Alan and Marilyn Bergman.
