For the person that asked, AFAIK, the train featured in the opening credits is Amtrak's Crescent (years ago called the "Southern Crescent", run by the Southern Railway until 1979). It still runs today between New York and Lousiana with newer locomotives, Amfleet and Viewliner cars. Beautiful, comfortable train that's still well patronized. Runs over 100mph speeds between NY & Washington and good stretches of 80mph running between Washington and New Orleans.
i miss the show. i would intenionally miss school to watch it cause it was that great to me and i didnt mind watching the reruns. they should make shows like this now a days.
I still enjoy watching this show in the reruns. Quality like this is rare nowadays. I still wish the remaining cast would get together for a reunion show. Bubba, Parker, Sweet, Corbin, Dee, Darnell, Doc Robb, Officer Randy, and Ron "Sherriff McCombs" Culbreth.
@Mattea68 - Yes, you're right. This show had such a well balanced cast. One thing that puzzled me was Geoffery Thorne's departure. Did a good job as Officer Sweet. I've searched the web but haven't found any info as to why he left the show and where he went.
@dreamnasium -Hi Mr. Thorne. Truly a pleasure reading a response from you. Good to read of your accomplishments as a professional writer & contributions you've made to sci-fi shows, including one of my favorites, ST Voyager. My family and I are still fans of In the Heat of the Night and always enjoyed your realistic portrayal of Officer Sweet, especially in the episode with Ed Ames (from Daniel Boone) as a dangerous racist sherriff. If you don't mind my asking, why did you leave the show?
@dreamnasium- Glad that it was a successful career move as your work has shown that. Do you stay in touch with your former cast members (Alan Autry, Crystal Fox, Denise Nicholas, Dave Hart). Understandably you were actors doing a job, but in watching the show one gets the impression that as a group the cast seemed to have a reputable, family-like bond inspite of the personal problems that cropped up. Of course problems that any human being can have.
I just had to come back to listen to this...I remember watching it in the 90's, I used to hate it because it wasnt cartoons. lol...But i remember i always LOVED the Intro!
@ooSicknesSoo Yeah. Those are my favorite (and what I hear from many old timers) they loved the old police cars. The Chevy Caprice's and Dodge Diplomats.
Boy does this bring back memories. I always went to my grandparents' house after elementary school back in the 90's and my grandpa, brother and I would always watch this show. I could still recall how the song went.
@qg300 Me neither I have looked everywhere for DVDs. MeTV where I live runs a one hour episode from Monday through Friday but that's it. I remember when it use to come on for 2 hours on TNT and WGN.
It shows how wide a range Carroll O'Connor had. He went from playing bigot Archie Bunker to Bill Gillespie, who was married to a Black woman in the series.
That couldn't have happened in the movie, which came out when several states still had laws against interracial marriage.
Also, in response to your other post about Howard Rollins, I agree.
Fortunately, to me, Howard/Rollins makes up half of the Phillies infield! ;-)
who sung the song for the intro

Sung and written by Bill Champlin who is best know with the band Chicago. He also wrote hits for George Benson and Earth, Wind, and Fire.

Um, actually, Champlin only performed the song. It was really written by Quincy Jones and Alan and Marilyn Bergman.
