  • hes got skills

  • What a wonderful tribute Michael would have loved this performance!!

  • This is just about the best thing EVER!!!

  • This guy freaking rocks!

  • hmmm catholic church and michael jackson. am i the only one who thinks theres a connection to? ^^

  • @KTRTWVPAUS To Clarify, Trinity is an Episcopal Church

  • @trinitywallstreet sorry i was irritated because of one comment here.

  • @KTRTWVPAUS that was my reason for coming from fb to this link was to comment. for a second there i was foolish enough to think i was the first one to come up with that. jesus christ!

  • @marceloboisao - it's a digital (ie wholly electronic, pipeless) organ by Doug Marshall & David Ogletree. The console was supplied by Fratelli Ruffati of Padua, Italy. It replaced an Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ damaged in the 9-11 attacks. That in itself was rather controversial - the church said it was beyond repair, but it has subsequently been acquired by another church where it is to be restored - Trinity's claims as to the extent of the damage were seemingly greatly inflated.

  • A fabulous performance. I would love to hear this artist performing on one of the worlds great theatre organs. What a skill of art demonstated here. Thank you.

  • What is this organist's name?

  • @churchwhistles Robert Ridgell. He's now the organist at the Cathedral of St. Paul in St. Paul, MN.

  • Amazing playing

    And Music.

    ;)

  • really?

  • Is this the Marshall & Ogletree Opus 1. Wow! Just as they say, it is truly amazing. It sounds even better that many pipe organs.

  • @jvdurante84 Speaking as someone who's played this particular instrument, I have to respectfully disagree. Sure, it sounds better than a bad pipe organ, but I'd much rather have a mediocre-good one.

  • The church allowed him to play there because he can emphasize with Micheal Jackson having been a pedophile. (Cruel? : yes, Worth mentioning: totally).

  • @echoingheads Trinity is an Episcopal church, not Roman Catholic.

  • @evn3 Touché.

  • @evn3 - yeah, because the Episcopal church/worldwide Anglican Communion hasn't had its fair share of paedophiles either... the vast majority of clergy and organists in both Episcopal/Anglican and Roman Catholic churches are decent people who find paedophilia utterly repulsive. Please do not tar all Catholics with the same brush.

  • @AnOrganCornucopia It seems that you are reading much too far into my inane clarification of fact. It is widely known that pockets of church leadership were partly culpable in the sexual abuse of children by a very small number of priests. However, I highly doubt that any reasonably informed person really thinks that the vast majority of lay catholics or clergy are pedophiles or sex criminals.

  • @AnOrganCornucopia Naturally, this is a very sensitive sensitive issue as this does reflect poorly on all catholics too some degree. I understand your pugnaciousness, but it really is unnecessary. In the United States among many circles it is common to "make fun" of what may seems like highly distasteful things. Youtube comments sections are naturally quite low-brow, and thus by responding to any "humor" you find distasteful you will be a busy man indeed.

  • Oh for goodness sake. Who cares how you two spell. That's not the point. We are talking music/talent/MJ here!!!!!

  • @BrianTobias we are fairly certain Mr. Ridgell did this on the flly with no sheet music at all. Thank you for your kind comment.

  • Is there anywhere the sheet of this beautiful arrangement ? well done !

  • This is just amazing. I wish al lot more organists would play stuf like this and not Bach al the time. I`d say its time for a temperary Bach boycot and play only pop and other music like this. it is valid because the service has already ended. Fire away, I`d say

  • this is a serious work of music. Organ is not for the light of heart, it is unfortunat that organ is associated with church music. Organs are large and heavy instruments that are difficult to move.

I think the arranger of the organ work did a decent job of putting elements of organ repertoire and MJs work together. There is a lot of variety of color and music elements in the work.

  • @Jewdai Couldn't agree with you more

  • **and

  • It's a shame this kind of music can't be appreciated when played on an organ. There's a pretense that music played on an organ MUST be religious or classical in origin… but here's an exercise of modern music arranged brilliantly for the instrument. People can't accept the organ repertoire's modernization, and it's killing the organ. If playing modern works on this marvelous, versatile instrument was acceptable, the organ would again be relevant and wouldn't be facing the slow death it is now.

  • TACKY!!!! I know many a musician who'd be looking for a new job after that!

  • You know I'd go to church everyday!!!!! if they'd play pipe organs like musical instruments, and not religiously or quietly. Organs are made to be loud and joyful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • boy what hypercrites, your playing THRILLER in your church-thriller is about demons and death-you priest people are fake anyway, you rape children, etc.

Even mj's JW's would allow thriller, but you guys are. And why out of all songs did you pick thriller-oh, it's beacause your demon possesed. At least mj did'nt play around with God.

  • @heyathere1000 This isn't thriller!

  • @TheEzekiel300 oh, but priest are still not suppose pay tribute to mj, their suppose to worship God, so shame on them.

  • @TheEzekiel300 oh, but priest are still not suppose pay tribute to mj, their suppose to worship God, so shame on them. And their doing this in church, church is only a place for worship to God, no one else, hypercrites.

  • @heyathere1000 one: you spelled hyocrites wrong for the third time (and this just means you cant spell). And just to correct your mistake (as in im sorry for butting in), that man isnt a preist, hes just the organist/youth choir director

  • @YunqHunniie0654 you really need to go because your talking about me spelling hypocrite wrong, one word, a word hardly used by many people, a word that some people don't even know what it means. Besides you spelled three different words wrong, at least mine was only one word that a lot of people don't even use hardly, you can't even spell the most common words, ha ha.

Now leave me alone and go mine your own business. Remember you commented me first, now scam and leave me alone, go.

  • @heyathere1000 hey, look im still talking. its scram...not scam

  • @YunqHunniie0654 .......

  • @heyathere1000 i suggest you shut up. I'm a chorister at Trinity Wall Street and its nothing like that. What you just said about MY chorus director was rude on so many levels. and you spelled hypocrites wrong

  • @YunqHunniie0654 Well, I suggest you shut up. You have your opinion and I have mine, now scam. And who cares if I spelled hyprocrite wrong earlier, I only spelled it wrong by one letter, have you ever hear of typo? or mistake? You was able to read it, weren't you? Now go.

  • @heyathere1000 no, it isnt a mistake if you spelled it wrong twice. You obviously dont know micheal jackson either because they are playing Beat It. Who cares if it was a church? Michael died anmd they are doing a tribute. We all have opinions, i know that, but your opinion is wrong. Its like saying "most black people are so fat". Yes its your opinon but is it the right thing to say? And you have bad grammar too. What a shame. Also, your fighting with a 13 year old. Now go.

  • @YunqHunniie0654 If I were you I would'nt embarrass myself anymore than you already did. You said I mispelled hypocrite wrong which was only by one letter or two, look at your spelling mrs. ignorant: It's isn't not isnt. It's and not anmd. It's opinion not opnon. You spelled 3 words wrong, now stop embarrassing yourself. And my "one" word misspelling in a whole paragraph has nothing to do with my intellect, people make mistakes all the time such as yourself mispelling 3 words in a papragraph.

  • @heyathere1000 Really? I spelled opinion correct the first time i spelled it, and i put an asterisk with the correct spelling of 'and' in another comment, cuz i recognized my mistake. unlike u did. I spelled 'isnt' the right way. A comma isnt a letter. And as i said before, its not a typo if you misspelled the same word twice. Also I didnt say you could see your fighting with a 13 year old. Im telling u that. U talk about my spelling. Bit? Dont you mean bet? And again u spelled it wrong twice.

  • @YunqHunniie0654 I bit I know way more than you do about mj. And the reason I don't know what the guy is playing because he's not good at plaing mj songs in my opinion, maybe he's good at playing church songs, etc. I bit I can recognize mj playing beat it because he's good at it, so there, ha ha.

And how am I suppose to know that your 13, I don't have invisible eyes, I can't see you behind this computer, and who knows you might be lying. Also yourthe one that commented me first, now you go.

  • @YunqHunniie0654 I bit I know way more than you do about mj. • Wow this is amazing!

  • Can you anywhere buy the sheet of that wonderful arrangement ??

  • Wow! If people heard the pipe organ played like this more often, this instrument would truly once again be seen by all as "The King of Instruments"! Great performance! Thanks

  • this sounds freakin' epic!

  • you know what, this dude was having so much fun playing this tribute, that everyone else joined in and had fun :D

  • FANTASTIC!

  • hahaha is Good!

  • Is that Scott Farrell?

  • \m/ KattolikA RockS

  • Organ concerts at Trinity really rock!!

  • @Episcopalcriticiser ...I am Roman Catholic also and unless we are celebrating the Tridentine Mass, last time I checked the postlude isn't part of the Mass, so what this guy is doing is valid. It's the same as say a carol singing service or an organ concert. We have those in Roman Catholic Churches, do we not?

  • Oh dear oh dear oh dear - all the negative comments from people who know very little of the history of church music. Many of the great masses from the middle ages onwards were based on secular tunes (L'homme arme springs to mind) by a multitude of composers. I don't care much for Michael Jackson, but this organist is clearly a master musician, and should be honoured as such. A simply brilliant improvisation.

  • This is so cool it ACTUALLY brings tears to my eyes! :D

  • Awesome! I love it!

  • @marceloboisao It's called an organ

  • @jkenefick - I dare say he was asking who built it!

  • @Episcopalcriticiser what did you want them to do, re-write the lyrics to his music and make a few changes here and there to the scores and make it into a hymn?!!!

  • @Episcopalcriticiser pipe organs are pipe organ, a musical instrument. Anyway, god is supposed to be a pretty open guy, so im sure he wont mind!

What happens if the church has no organ, a piano instead, does that mean the piano is sacred too?

The music was played as a tribute to someone who had died.

  • @Episcopalcriticiser your an example of a church member, stuck in the victorian era. The organ is only a musical instrument at the end of the day. There is nothing to stop anyone playing any kind of music on it. The church is only a church in a service. Each church has its own ways, but being stuffy is one sure way to lose the congregation!

  • @Episcopalcriticiser That's right criticiser.....your church only encourages the molestation of little boys by the members of your clergy and then ships them off to do it again in another diocese. The nerve of you sir or madam.

  • @Episcopalcriticiser You are not worth of being an organist in the first place. This man pays a tribute to a man who changed so many, who was and still is so dear to many and who, now and forever, will be missed by all. Instead of whining about this piece being played here you should look to it from the other side: MJ moved so many people, hes worthy to be remembered in gods place.

  • Wonder!!!

    All the Best!!!

  • what a lovely Bloke ! ! !

  • MJ would have liked the organist's outfit.

  • it is nice man

  • Wonderful playing.

Wonderful crowd reaction at the end.

Does the congregation always stay and listen to postludes? U hope so, this man deserves it.

  • Amazing......... You Really are a very very very good organist. You know how to bring things to life!!!!!

  • Bello

  • Cool! Quite the improvisation...guy can really play!

  • Fantastic!

Sounds like a Louis Vierne improvisation! : )

  • Would you tell that organist that I want a copy of that music...WOW very impressive!!! Great Job!!!

  • Me too! (if it exist) Did he write it himself or were there just scores of the two songs used for this hommage?

  • lol. everyone starts laughing. wicked.

  • Now that's what I call an awesome postlude!

  • i played this!

  • Funny thing is (no offence) but you look at him and think - typical organist LOL.

Here we go again, Bach prelude, Bach Toaccata, Bach Chorale but no...A tribute to Michael Jackson.

Find me an English Cathedral that would allow me to play music like this.

Amazing. Proves a point - there is so much more than Bachs organ works!!

  • Comment removed

  • After 22 years at St Paul's Cathedral, London, Christopher Dearnley's final postlude was 'Misty' by Errol Garner!

  • @tommyupoo so much more, I hope that many organists follow this example

  • @tommyupoo but I like Bach :)

  • @tommyupoo Soo much more, if only more organists would discover this fact

  • Does anyone else find it creepy

  • No.

  • beginning does sound a bit demonic, but it's still cool :)

  • This is brilliant! I'm a pro player and would so play this at the end of a service or recital! Please can anyone tell me how to get the music?

  • Wow a standing ovation at MASS?!? Brilliantly played, Michael would be very proud. Wow, even the priest comes up to him and says well done afterwards!

  • it is scarey how good Michael's songs sound played by orchestra

  • What does it matter??!! it's a great piece to hear ;) If this music continues to be played in Trinity Church, I'll emigrate to the US!!!!!! Fantastic performance

  • Heard that instrument over the weekend what a piece of crap! Why in the world would they replace the Skinner with that Digital crap that will be worthless in 10 years! What a tragedy!

  • @davbear221 I've heard it before and it's not crap! But it's certainly nothing like real pipe organ. I'll just stick to St. Thomas on 5th ave. Better choir AND they have John Scott

  • @davbear221 Because the M&O was originally intended to be temporary, installed due to damage to the Skinner from 9/11. Not to worry, they'll probably have a pipe organ (maybe even the old Skinner) in there not too long from now, the M&O has been a point of much frustration recently.

  • @menschmaschine5 - what's been wrong with the M&O? Speaking as one looking to acquire one...

  • @AnOrganCornucopia I can't speak for very recently, as I no longer live in town and haven't been to TWS in quite some time, but about a year ago it was having major issues. Parts of the organ would randomly stop working, and in fact the entire thing went nuts and they had to resort to an electronic keyboard on at least one Sunday morning. The thing is, it's a computer, and computers don't last very long; this M&O is 8 years old at this point.

  • @menschmaschine5 - fair enough! Thanks for the ultra-prompt reply! Mind you, a lot of pipe organs with computerised solid state electric action are little better... but I'd still rather have a good pipe organ where space allows. Digital can be good in that you can have lots of percussion! I know that some pipe organs these days (e.g. the Mormon Conference Center Schoenstein in Salt Lake, UT) include them.

Please check out my channel - I think that it will interest you!

  • Give him a break. It was clearly an awesome tribute to a great musician AND it was for the postlude. The fact that someone's mind can conjure up something like this, is just mind-blowing to me. Also, if you had never heard Michael Jackson's songs before in your life, you would think that this is an incredible modern-day piece.

  • If they had done that here in the UK in a church like Trinity! God he would be fired immediately!

  • It's impressive and the organ sounds magnificent. BUT... isn't this just a little more than inappropriate for use in church? I can't believe he got away with it and didn't get fired.

  • Did you see the wide shot of the church afterwards? It was before or after a service, not during. Get off of your soapbox and enjoy music.

  • Hey man, there's a time and a place. And no, I didn't see the last MILI-SECOND of the footage. Sorry I didn't watch all the way until 3:47! Dang, maybe if there had been some other shots of the church I wouldn't have written anything.

  • -praise band-

Yeah, that tells me everything I need to know.

  • Tells you what?

  • woah...

  • The organist's name is Robert Ridgell.

  • WOW!

  • Nice!

  • BAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.... fuging ABC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAA!!!

  • Merci LOVEVA

  • INCREDIBLE!!!!! What talent!

  • WONDERFUL!!!!! What a phenomenal musician!!!!

    HATS OFF!!

  • totally cool... I agree the organ is probably the most magnificent sounding instrument on the planet... and to play todays music on it is difficult to say the least...Actually I was thinking I would hear Thriller not A-B-C, but man o man, this guy was rockin' it!!!

  • I love all of these people detesting this improvisation at the end of the service! Improvisation pulls in all facets of music whether you chose secular or sacred. It's done in a classical manner with a Fugue subject built on the song "A-B-C". I suppose it's ok though when someone wants Goo Goo Dolls or Sarah McLachlan played at a memorial in A CHURCH via CD or audio cassette. Give it a rest and enjoy the video for what it was/is.

  • The controversy is a travesty - he was innocent. It is far - far worse to condemn 1 innocent man than to let go 10 guilty ones. The organ is an invention of man which God provided by the talent of its inventors & is not a restricted sacred instrument and it is indeed fitting to pay tribute to Michael in this original manner no matter what faith one is. Michael did not leave faith be a boundary to help countless others in the course of his life and for that alone this tribute is quite fitting.

  • lol you're obviously not as liberal as the 'rest of them.'

  • oh shut up and die

  • Yep your a good christian, your why the christian church is dying dude, stp being so conservative in your faith and get out of the bubble that you formed around it.

  • It would be even better if you gave the name of the organist in your video's description.

  • that's bad ass

  • Comment removed

  • Organists rule! That was great! And no doubt he also transcribed the music -- f'in brilliant!!

  • cant really even tell what song it is half the time.

  • I agree. I could only hear only one tune of his that was familiar.

  • i think maybe there was more of the piece to go? cos if you look right at the end he attempts to go for a piston but then bails cos of the audience's applause? just a thought.

  • Nice little fugue on ABC and--seriously--the man has some serious, serious chops!

  • Classic!!

  • no one's even listening to this crap. they're all walking around. typical. and by the end, everyone in the church is gone. this is just vile.

  • Yeah, my mom's an organist, and while she doesn't ever play Michael Jackson for a postlude, no one ever listens to her either.

  • Actually the applause wasn't pre-recorded. The majority of the congregants were located in the rear of the nave towards the narthex; the camera showing the altar being over their heads.

  • I know. I was, apparently unsuccessfully, giving a sarcastic reply to elizabethcellist's comment that "no one's even listening" :-)

  • Man that was awesome.

  • cool man!

  • Brilliant and a timely tribute to a great musician. Makes me proud to be Episcopalian!

  • Great job - thanks!

  • It's real! It's on the church's website. Trinity Church, Wall Street!

  • Oh hey that's the church from National Treasure!

  • postlude on sunday

  • Was this actually done as the postlude or is it editing together something that happened at another time with shots of the crowd after service?

  • Ottimo
