You really can do this. There are electricians who do custom work to set up your house to be run by remote or computer. Timers turn your lights on before you get home, play music, etc. You can buy windows that will automatically tint to darken the room or allow you to adjust the tint, make your blinds close automatically. You can link up your home to voice technology. Imagine issuing commands to control your home "lights""security off".
One should expect that. The computer that's automating it all has to wait for instructions from the Wii on what to do. The Wii has to render the interface given it by the automating computer. The Wii has to interpret the motion from the Wii-mote, change the interface, and send those changes as input to the automating computer. The computer then has to interpret and process those changes as commands to control the lights.
The automating computer then has to figure out the command to send to a dimmer which has to change the power being sent to the lights.
Propagation time over all those wires must also be taken into account.
All in all, it takes a long time, relative to a dimmer switch on a wall, to change the light levels. It would be very difficult to make a system like this instantaneous.
Not really. Bluetooth controller is plenty fast. Wifi is plenty fast. PLM/Insteon protocol is pretty fast. Each of these steps takes less than 1/100th of a second. The slowest part might be the web server itself.

Looks pretty cool. It seems that it'd be a hassle, though, to have to turn on the Wii and go into the channel just to do something--opposed to a remote controller that is.

You really can do this. There are electricians who do custom work to set up your house to be run by remote or computer. Timers turn your lights on before you get home, play music, etc. You can buy windows that will automatically tint to darken the room or allow you to adjust the tint, make your blinds close automatically. You can link up your home to voice technology. Imagine issuing commands to control your home "lights""security off".

One should expect that. The computer that's automating it all has to wait for instructions from the Wii on what to do. The Wii has to render the interface given it by the automating computer. The Wii has to interpret the motion from the Wii-mote, change the interface, and send those changes as input to the automating computer. The computer then has to interpret and process those changes as commands to control the lights.

The automating computer then has to figure out the command to send to a dimmer which has to change the power being sent to the lights.
Propagation time over all those wires must also be taken into account.
All in all, it takes a long time, relative to a dimmer switch on a wall, to change the light levels. It would be very difficult to make a system like this instantaneous.

Not really. Bluetooth controller is plenty fast. Wifi is plenty fast. PLM/Insteon protocol is pretty fast. Each of these steps takes less than 1/100th of a second. The slowest part might be the web server itself.
