I had never heard of this movement until I was in Kansas City, Missouri in April 08 and there was a group of women with signs. We ran up and hugged them and then found out about the movement!

Now here's my opinion. Free hugs are as cheep as giving five cents to the homeless bloke on the street. You may think that your helping someone, but your not really doing jack. The contact is hollow since you don't know the person.

To the giver of free hugs, the hugged is no more than a number. Another person that they can tick off on their tally sheet and make themselves feel good for 'making a difference'.

If you want to really help people, the Red Cross, St Vincent de Paul and the salvation army all need volunteers, as do many other charities out there. If you want to make a real difference in someone's life, then there's a good place to start.

On the other side of the coin i personally find these people funny, like a juggler on the street, or a human statue, or my friend who runs up to a MX guy, grabs a paper and yells "MINE!" as he runs off.
