@LMTR14 Well at least you're getting into the spirit of things! Lighten up man . . . you can still listen to the things that make you happy . . . if you get fed up with self-torture.
This whole album resonated with me when I was in my formative years and still sounds as fresh and different as it did then. That drum fill at 2:04 just sounds so brilliant - that gated snare sound that Padham and Collins came up with (at Gabriel's request - he stipulated NO cymbals on this album at all) is just such a fantastic sound. Love it.
\The most sinister, clostrophobic, exciting, moving and incredible album. Owned it for 25 years and it sounds like it was made last week, one of the best ever.
I remember being 20 when I first got this cassette and was blown away. Beginning to end this 3rd album is awesome, and this is my favorite track. It's been 23 years. Thanks for implanting this back in my brain.
@ttmilbr The cassette that I bought over 20 years ago still sounds fine so I've never needed to buy the CD. The music still sounds fresh (and great to hear Kate Bush too).
FANTASTIC does not begin to describe this timeless wonder from the Master Peter Gabriel!! Came across this fascinating piece of info regarding the song on another site (unfortunately have to rename namelesst: "This was inspired by Steve Reich's album Music For 18 Musicians. A composer who studied at Juilliard, Reich experimented with electronic textures that Gabriel wanted to try in a rock format."
I don't know any other artist that can dissect collective fear and instinct and reassemble it musically. I mean, this song is like an emotional carpet bombing!! I remember listening to this on my headphones and belting it out loud in my bedroom (poor neighbors). This whole album ruled my youth- truly excellent.
Your comment rings so true. I loved the live album as well. I've never heard anyone so eloquently express the most basic human instincts in popular song.
I had just been utterly screwed by my employer when I first heard this. I used sit at my keyboard with a feral grin on my face at 2AM pounding out code for an impossible project, listening to this and imaging the "silences" leaping out from behind a chair and eating the project management team, making the sound at 1:48 as they did so. This song probably kept me from killing them all myself.
Heh. In a manner of speaking I suppose. I "knew how to stop" in that I didn't kill them *all*, just a few of them. I left the rest for the other developers.
Nothing quite like the sound of the string of hertas on Phil's toms @ 2:03. This blew me away in 1987 when I first heard it as an extra track on a mini CD of Big Time.
Belated.. happy birthday dear mr gabriel and stay as creative, inspired and touching as you are.

This track alone merits the purchase of a decent amp, speakers and turntable. A truly menacing masterpiece like this needs to be played loud.

Totally agree you feel the angst in the song and the music is so intense. his music is like Hendrix and Zepplin still relevant

All of his releases are great but this one stands out as his most urgent and inovative. Very dark and very addictive

Combine Peter's signature ethereal marimba patterns and Phil's unmatchable drumming abilities and you have one great song.
