i find this video offensive. a cochlear implant doesn't make the person hearing, it just helps them to hear. this is like saying that a person who is visually impaired shouldn't have glasses, or a person without a limb shouldn't have prosthetic limbs. i admit that people are more open-minded now, but this is seriously.. full-on hating on a little device.
I am deaf, 24, i finally recieved c.i. few months ago recieved it. i admit the acting itself is funny, but way it say strongly against to c.i. is little insulting same time. I want to have c.i. because i want to able communicate better with hearing, plus most importantly: my career will become a veterinary, i need it for my happiness and for able communicate with customers. the irony here is that i use C.I and i'm a BSAC instructor where i teach people how to snorkel and suba diving at a local swimming pool and out on a trip to the sea.

I was born with normal hearing but when I was 5 years old I came down a severe case of mumps that left me deaf in my right ear. I would love to hear properly, I would love to be able to tell where people are when they call out to me when they can't see me... Cochlear Implants are not about 'fixing' anything they are about restoring a sense, adding something. People who attack the concept are fools.
I don't know why you folks make fun of Cochlear implants. Being deaf and blind is very lonely. And the implant is a wonderful technology, hope they can crack the blindness situation. But I don't know if this works for all ears and deafness. Major FAIL. Not so funny.

Maybe it's just my sense of humor! This video was made back in the early 90s where there was lots of raw controversy about CIs emerging among the deaf community. Judging by some of the responses you've received to this vid, it seems to me that the "raw controversy" about CI's you think faded since the '90's is as much alive today as it was then. It is still a sensitive subject because so many from the deaf community are absolute assholes to CI users. I'm sure you know what I mean. my daughter is still deaf. the CI doesn't make her hearing. She only hears when she has it on which is 80% of the day. When she does hear, it sounds digital and electronic, not like a "normal hearing person". It took a lot of work, training, and practice to get where she is and I am extremely proud of her. Our whole entire family still signs, why because she is still deaf. why did we get the CI? because we wanted her have the best of both worlds and be able to communicate with anyone she meets.

I have high respect for deaf people because I have seen a lot of successfull friends but some are just arrogant and taking it personally, if you are against CI that is your opinnion and your descission and we respect that. What a shame there is so much misinformation about the CI. I just listened to a so called sound of the CI. It is so incredibly wrong. I have a CI and the sound is very close to what I remember as normal before I went deaf.
Also I want deaf people to know that spoken language is beautiful. Just the same as sign language is beautiful. I am a hearing person, being that I am, I choce the c.i. for my daughter because what a tragedy it would be for her to miss out on things like music,hearing the birds sing,the wind blow, and so many things.True,I dont't know or undrestand what it is to be deaf,but i do know and understand what it is to hear. ok i want to say this i cant judge a deaf person because i've never been deaf in my life but i know it has its advantages but being hearing is not a bad thing at ALL sure we dont have as good perivial vision but i dont think the deaf community should judge us so harsh because we lovee to hear the cant judge us because they have never heard. I think this is not funny at all if it were true then fine but its not my son got a cochlear implant and yes IT IS the BEST thing that I have accomplished in my life and just seeing him advance socially and physically due to the implant in astonishing to me I didn't expect so much from it. As a hearing impaired person (which I believe you are as well), you should know that hearing impairement is different for each individual. My son has auditory neuropathy. What works for one person, may not for the other. And, the last thing folks with impairements should be doing is criticizing choices. I certainly don't criticize the choice to NOT have a CI.
I believe that if a deaf child understands what a cochlear implant is and that it might not work once they get it, then they should be able to choose. But parents should not just DO it without the child's consent.
(P.S. I am hearing, and more often than not, I wish I was deaf. I'm currently learning ASL in HS.)

I am deaf, 24, i finally recieved c.i. few months ago recieved it. i admit the acting itself is funny, but way it say strongly against to c.i. is little insulting same time. I want to have c.i. because i want to able communicate better with hearing, plus most importantly: my career will become a veterinary, i need it for my happiness and for able communicate with customers. I am just never happy with silent world. it just drove me crazy. But everyone's entitled to their own opinion.

Two things that really bug me about this movie:
1. Obviously whoever made this doesn't know how both lightening and metal detectors work.
2. The technophobia that seems to surround CIs and other medical technology. I had a bone disease and had to use crutches for years, now I have new metal joints and can jog and play sports again. If people want to embrace it, technology can make their lives better.
People should get the facts and not propagate.

I was born with normal hearing but when I was 5 years old I came down a severe case of mumps that left me deaf in my right ear. I would love to hear properly, I would love to be able to tell where people are when they call out to me when they can't see me... Cochlear Implants are not about 'fixing' anything they are about restoring a sense, adding something. People who attack the concept are fools.

Before you go crazy on this, it's only a joke... think of it as the "SNL" (Saturday Night Live) version of joking about CI's. I'm a CI recipient, and I think it's hilarious. Maybe it's just my sense of humor! This video was made back in the early 90s where there was lots of raw controversy about CIs emerging among the deaf community. So now the attitude has changed for the better. Just live a little and laugh, will ya??

What if some you saw some soldier from Iraq who had his leg blown off. Do you think he would want to walk. Of course he would. It is a modification to be able to talk. You want to be deaf take it off then. If that soldier wants to walk around with crutches then fine that is up to him. But to have this conversation about a modification like a CI is opinion. And like politics or religion it is not a good subject to talk about. No one is going to change their mind. Acceptance is good for you.

my daughter is still deaf. the CI doesn't make her hearing. She only hears when she has it on which is 80% of the day. When she does hear, it sounds digital and electronic, not like a "normal hearing person". It took a lot of work, training, and practice to get where she is and I am extremely proud of her. Our whole entire family still signs, why because she is still deaf. why did we get the CI? because we wanted her have the best of both worlds and be able to communicate with anyone she meets.

I have high respect for deaf people because I have seen a lot of successfull friends but some are just arrogant and taking it personally, if you are against CI that is your opinnion and your descission and we respect that. Parents out there with a baby with severe to profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, please strongly consider a ci for your baby. Also I want deaf people to know that spoken language is beautiful. Just the same as sign language is beautiful. I am a hearing person, being that I am, I choce the c.i. for my daughter because what a tragedy it would be for her to miss out on things like music,hearing the birds sing,the wind blow, and so many things.True,I dont't know or undrestand what it is to be deaf,but i do know and understand what it is to hear. God has blessed us with the technology and why not take advantage of it!

I'm hearing and work with Deaf children and other Deaf professionals(some have aides, some have CI, some none)and I think it's wrong to say all Deaf people should get hearing aids or implants...that is what living in this day and age is all about: CHOICE
It's not about BEING LEFT BEHIND, if I had a Deaf or hh child, I'd struggle with the decision of having them hear or depriving them of a deep connection to the Deaf community.

they are not being left behind. they are progressing as a community and culture. in the dark ages the Deaf were alone and only knew and could barely communicate with their family. now they share a more universal language which allows them to have their own community separate from the hearing community. are you proud of your heritage ron? why should the Deaf not be proud of theirs?

Deaf people are proud of their culture and their language. Just because the majority of the world is hearing doesn't mean the Deaf community should change to become like everyone else. There isn't anything to "fix" about them. If the majority of the world was deaf would you have someone to implant you with a device to make you like everyone else? for one this video is humor. and a the implant does restore hearing like people think. your ear has 16000 nerve receptors and the implant has 24 so its like covering at an art piece with large sheet of paper and making 24 microscopic holes in the sheet, obviously that is not see the piece of art. yes the brain will adapt to it but it is NOT HEARING as a average person know its PLUS it will eliminate all residual hear a deaf person has

Why? It stays with you 24/7/12. You have sleep positions limited? Users can't swim, wrestle, and do other fun activities. It has risks such as damaging nerve system on face, causing pain and dizzy. Putting them on babies against their wills. I know a Gally student, who had CI and it worked, bought with his money to have it removed, when he became adult. It's so burden to carry it all the time. Users are unattractive. Why bother with CI?

If you really do want to know more about this, I would love to help inform you. I didn't think you were actually open to new information. My son does not have to sleep in any special position. He can swim. He can play like any other kid. He rides rollercoasters, etc. He can take his implants off anytime he wants to. He wants them on except for bed and sometimes quiet time in the morning. You do show ignorance on the topic. Ignorance is not a put down. It's a condition easily remedied.

There is chance that CI can damage nerve system on face, prevents them from swimming and other activities, had to sleep with it, etc. 90% deaf ppl can dream in color and 50% of your ppl dream in b&w; we have better periphereal vision; avg deaf child of deaf parents score higher on IQ than avg hearing child of the same age; and we drive safer. Without CI or earring aid wouldn't help deaf people alot. Like I dont understand why deaf people wouldn't use the CI. So seriously CI changed my life to normal. I enjoyed my life.

Can't the children be bilingual and bicultural? They can choose later if they prefer either culture. Provide them with the opportunity. If my son is deaf I will let him have the implant but learn Sign as a family. It all depends on whether the deaf community is willing to accept these children.

I'm hearing impaired too. The reason why I dislike cochlear implant is because CI makes people look like robots. Plus it is very unnatural to put something in your body. Hearing aids work miracle for me and I love it. One of my "friends" from my church has his CI but he said that CI had never helped him. He said that his mother forced him to have CI when he was young. I feel bad for this guy.

As a hearing impaired person (which I believe you are as well), you should know that hearing impairement is different for each individual. My son has auditory neuropathy. What works for one person, may not for the other. And, the last thing folks with impairements should be doing is criticizing choices. I certainly don't criticize the choice to NOT have a CI.

I believe that if a deaf child understands what a cochlear implant is and that it might not work once they get it, then they should be able to choose. But parents should not just DO it without the child's consent.
(P.S. I am hearing, and more often than not, I wish I was deaf. I'm currently learning ASL in HS.)
