I'm from Britain and Dan Gable is a hero of mine, MMA got me interested in wrestling and ive been learning its history ever since. Thank you Dan Gable for inspiring me.
Dan Gable is the Leonidas of the USA. He is a champion that should be thanked for everything he has done. God Bless Dan Gable and God Bless USA Wrestling
@jurom7 Karelin was a monster, no doubt. I always have been impressed by the Russian or Soviet wrestlers then. Ivan Medved, Sergei and Antoli Belaglozov and many many more. Karelin was a Greco Roman man but i've always enjoyed the freestyle wrestling a little more, but thats just me and i respect the Greco style too. I think i was a little buzzed on Samuel Adams when i made that bold post. LOL! Nice to see someone so knowledgeable about wrestling, it's a great sport. Cheers.

@norma1250 Its not really hard to figure it out yourself. You should have asked this somewhere else, with a comment virtually every 2 weeks did you expect an instant reply?
My Dad (who is not a "tough guy "& is really laid back) was friends with a lot of tough NW Iowa farm boys who loved to fight. One summer at the lakes they were drinking beer when they noticed Gable. My old man says that one of his friends went over to start some trouble & before you know it Gable tossed him into the lake, telling him to stay swimming unless he wanted to get a beating. My Dad couldn't stop laughing, the guy had to stay in the water for 10 mins, until Dan walked towards the park
That Iranian he was talking about was my father....however he didn't verse him since my father then got in trouble with the King of Iran and wasn't allowed to wrestled at the 1972 Olympics. My father claims that he would have won since he did more techniques than Dan Gable. But he doesn't say that Dan Gable was bad, he said that he was dedicated and really great at what he did.
@davidroeshot I'm an Iowan and wrestled in Iowa and would love to say Iowa, but you know there's great wrestling ANYwhere. Iowa, Pennsylvania (where it's extremely good), Ohio, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Illinois and Wisconsin has the great reputations. So does South Dakota and that state has very little population, but they had a pair of greats in Randy Lewis and Lincoln McIravey.
I bet 10 million dollars that we will never see another olympics where a freestyle wrestler will win gold and go unscored upon throughout the tournament with even half the brutal competition that Gable had in 1972 .........
@tankjujitsu Alexander karelin went 12 years and 3 olympics without giving up a point. In his fourth olympic he let up a penalty point. Even more impressive.
Alexander karelin went 12 years without giving up a point. 3 olympic golds. 1 silver on a referee's decision (which was the only point giving up in 4 olympics and over 15 years. A bit more impressive than Gable. Right?
@jurom7 I don't know whether you are only counting his Olympic career as far as giving up a point, but his streak was "only" six years long. Just saying, even though that is still maybe the most impressive feat in all of wrestling.
@jurom7 nothing negative against karelin b/c he was a beast. here is the thing not many many humans have karelin's genetics. he is 286lb with less than 10% bodyfat. however, many humans have gable's genetics. he has to rely more on skill than pure brute strength like karelin. no wrestler in greco roman rules has the physical power to pick alexander up and throw him. many men have gable's power, but not nearly the skill. Gable's accomplishments are therefore more impressive.
@54tatersalad 2 time champ. In his day freshmen weren't allowed to compete. He won his sophomore and junior years and lost to Owings his senior year in his last collegiate match.
wow, this is great, but i bet that he didn't think that he wouldn't even surrender a single point on the way to becoming a gold medalists. he sets the bar for all wrestlers on all levels, both today and tomorrow
