    Robert

  • I trained Colin back in the early 70's when he came to work for Keith Prowse,he was so sweet and me had some many laughs togeter,I still think if him with great affection

  • Wonderful! I can identify absolutely with this song!!!!!!

  • D Doris was a descendant of Alec Hurley, a celebrated Music Hall singer who was Marie Lloyd's second husband x

  • @westbridgelennie Thank you for the information . He had entertaining in the blood . I miss seeing him and remembering him on stage still brings a smile to my face especially my first recollection at 'The Bridge' in Putney, where with a thunderflash he appeared on stage spinning dressed as' Wonderwoman ' . All stars and stipes as it was July 4th ! A wonderful man and performer.

  • Doris had a heart of gold, i think of him often - we had some great times together geting drunk as judges - always a massive hoot, he was extremely funny, but it was hard to make him laugh.

  • thank you wonderful

  • Great Oldie, but who is the Colin mentioned in comments?

  • Colin Devereaux RIP was a drag "artiste" who sadly died aged 50 a few years ago . His act was based on a character called "Dockyard Doris" and was firmly based on traditional British Music Hall . Bawdy and yet clever Colin was a master of his art and it was tragic that such a wonderful man should die so young.

  • Wasn't 'Dockyard Doris' a relative of 'Lady Docker?'

    Thank you.

    Jennie.

  • im surprised its 40. In those days it was 30. 40 was like 60 is today.

  • My old ma sang this song, and look how I turned out

  • Thank you for posting this. I agree with others, I think that those coming out today will have an easier passage (!) than many of us did, but they also miss out on a true gay community, polari and lock-ins! Its lovely to be reminded of the (truly) Bona Good Old Days!

  • I worked with Colin many times and was one of the many acts who played at his benefit at the Sebright which he was sadly too ill to attend by that time, in spite of hopes for a final personal appearance.

He always used to upstage me by coming on in the middle of my act and playing the spoons during a ukulele solo. Those days were great fun. I still miss Colin enormously. The turnout at his funeral was proof (as if it was needed!) of the love, affection and admiration people had for him.

  • Wonderful ! No truer words.

  • Elsie summed it up the old days were much better like a carry on for me pity the gay people of today. Did Tessie O shea sing this as well? funny camp and wonderful.

  • I really feel sorry for lads coming out nowadays. OK, it was it was ruff, it was hard in our time but at least we had fun, these poor lads have nothing like what we had. In our time their was a gay community.

It's all drugs and having a six pack nowadays, I feel sorry for the poor sods.

Glad I'm not young, not bothering with a six pack, I'm going for a keg!

  • had many tate ah tates with the lovely dockyard doris, great guy god bless him

  • Thanks for your comments . I only knew Colin through his art. He was, for me, a comic genius but privately a shy and likeable man . How sad that he died so relatively young. I don't know whether there is a Heaven but ,if there is, he is surely there.

  • I worked with Colin back in the early 70's at Keith Prowse,he was very quite and timid but a loverly guy,he is sadly missed

  • I also worked with Colin at KP at this time. He was a larger than life personality and he would have us in stitches with his 'Queen Mother' impersonations. He lived his life to the full and will never be forgotton by those who knew him.

  • Hi, I guess I am a little disappointed, I thought I was going to see a clip of Colin doing his 'Dockyard Doris' I remember seeing him at the British Music Hall Society' and to see him go from Shirley Temple to the late Queen Mother via Sophie Tucker was unforgetable. Yes sadly missed indeed.

  • I remember the great shows she did on various stages around London. Very funny, very funny!

    Sadly missed

    A marvelous personality.

Is there any more memorabilia ??

  • Dockyard was an absolute sweety.
