There were Liberal(traditional, not Progressive), moderate and conservative Repubs who supported civil rights. There has been a systematic move to get American citizens (those of color in particular) to "voluntarily" give up their Constitutional rights and freedoms and submit to a nationalized centralized government that treats them like cattle. FDR helped this along with subsidy monies offered to hurting farmers (a lot of them black). In 1942 the Supreme Court ruled in Wickerd VS Filburn that what the fed. gov. subsidizes/finances, it has the right to REGULATE. Then Johnson's Great Society came along...

Read up on the Southern Stategy, conservative swine. Dixiecrats, i.e., Southerns Dems, were always conservative. Party labels change over time and parties always undergo realignment. During the civil rights era, Dems started to court blacks, and the Dixiecrats left the party in droves and are now Republicans.

In 1888 there was a anti- civil rights movement in the REPUBLICAN party itself. It was called the LILY WHITE MOVEMENT. This was WHITE CONSERVATIVE groups in the REPUBLICAN party who were against black and tan delegates obtaining office. The 1968 election cycle that brought Nixon to presidency and Nixon introduced affirmation as president(which really was the Southern Strategy.)?
Herbert Hoover did drive Blacks from the Repub party. He was a Progressive, not a conservative. The Hayes Compromise occurred in 1877, not 1875.

@Aegius absolutely Carter won the entire south in 1976. Georgia didnt switch till 2002, Louisiana had 2 dems till 2004. In Fact Democrats were strong, in the 1990 senate race, both arkansas and georgia were pretty unopposed by Republicans in the senate race

Georgia didnt have 2 republican senators till 2002, Louisiana was controlled by democrats till 2004. If your logic is correct, why didnt majority of the southern segregationist senators keep elected as DEMOCRATS! Democrats was very strong in the south till 1994 republican revolution.

The Democrats lost the South over time via being in favor of big gov and not via opposing racism, which really came much more from Repubs. Just look over the debate on gov run HC. The strongest opposition has come from MO, VA and TX, all Southern states. TX now has Loser Pays which Repubs advocate yet Dems oppose. This commentator leaves out a lot of information. The parties of the 1800s are nothing like the parties of today. He seems to be inferring that modern Democrats are KKK members, which most are not.
The Republicans where originally made up of everyone that was anti-slaver no matter what party the person came from, (there where a few different parties at that time, like the Wigs and all anti-slave democrats joined them). At the time the Democrats where the Liberals (look the word up).

Generally speaking, after World War I the Republican party became the more conservative of the two major parties, with its support coming from the upper middle class and from the corporate, financial, and farming interests.
For anyone that might argue due to current propaganda about the world "Liberal", it is just someone that wants more freedom. If you ever read the book 1984 you would understand what they are trying to do with the word, make good things bad, no one wants them.

in the 60's after Kennedy died LBJ pushed through all his plans (special civil rights) LBJ was from the south and they felt betrayed. All the southern democrats switch to the republican party while the republicans switch to the democratic party. This is basic text book Knowledge. Long story short, Democrats use to be called republicans up until the 60's visa versa. I'm horrified every time I see people not know this.

@SuperBlackWoman1 you also do realize that a lot of southern whites were only racist to fit in and if they werent they were discriminated against as well(not saying it was ok) but this also had an effect on the change when they were able to allow how they actually felt and vote however they wanted without discrimination, people were threatened if they did not agree so this had a huge effect on the shift in numbers

@SuperBlackWoman1 Strom Thurmond switched to the Republicans in 1964. The Southern Strategy didn't begin until 1968 and it was about providing affirmative action for Blacks. The only Dem Senator to switch parties was Strom Thurmond. All the others stayed Democrat. IN fact most Dixiecrats STAYED Democrat.
The South didn't switch overnight to Repub but over a period of 40 years. It was only last year that the state legislature of NC switched.

@bronxbearbud Truman's presidency was from 1944 to 1953. Strom Thurmond switched to Repub in 1964. The Repubs voted in greater % of 80% to Dems 64% for the Civil Rights Act of 1964. I don't know if race was a factor, but it is unlikely as Repubs were more in favor of civil rights than Dems.

When he sold it (after a leveraged buyout from Pillsbury), it was the nation's 11th largest pizza chain. Success? Hardly. He was NOT Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank. And his work as a statistician for the Navy (which conveniently kept him out of Vietnam) means he was just another big government worker in a taxpayer-funded job in the military. I'll pass, thanks.

Re Godfather's Pizza, it was in the red when Cain took over in 1986. 2 years later costs were cut including the number of restaurants from 725 to 520 and the company became profitable. The reason for it going from 3 to 11 was to cut costs and become profitable. He turned it around as a success. & a big success.

@derfilmmacher Wrong. Southern Democrats continued to vote for Democrats. Nixon continued with civil rights in his term of office from 1969 to 1975. Ridiculous. Seriously, he campaigns avidly for civil rights in 1960 and then in 1968 he changes his tune 180º. That is utterly ridiculous.

There have been six 6 Blacks who served in the US Senate including 2 from MS. They couldn't have gotten there without Whites voting for them.

Repubs voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 at 82% while Dems only 60% and Dems were backed by the KKK and spear-headed antagonism to civil rights legislation. MLK PRAISED the Repub Senator Everett Dirksen from IL for the authoring of all the civil rights legislation. Dems were traditionally aligned w/KKK, while Repubs were opposed and MLK was thrown in jail in Birmingham BY DEMOCRATS.

@rhibac Evert Dirkssen and Calvin Coolidge were ardent supporters of civil rights and they were conservatives. There were Liberal(traditional, not Progressive), moderate and conservative Repubs who supported civil rights. The worst record was with the Progressives like Herbert Hoover who barely allowed any Blacks to serve in his admin and among the Dems Al Gore Sr and Robert Byrd. Barton referred to the last civil rights bill in 1875 and the Dems taking over in 1876 in another video.

The Republicans of today were called Democrats over a century ago. So actually the Republicans started the KKK, they just changed their name. Now they try to fool others into thinking it were the liberals but it's a lie. And Robert Byrd is one of the last of the old Democrats.

There has been a systematic move to get American citizens (those of color in particular) to "voluntarily" give up their Constitutional rights and freedoms and submit to a nationalized centralized government that treats them like cattle. FDR helped this along with subsidy monies offered to hurting farmers (a lot of them black). In 1942 the Supreme Court ruled in Wickerd VS Filburn that what the fed. gov. subsidizes/finances, it has the right to REGULATE. Then Johnson's Great Society came along...

Johnson's welfare/food stamp programs weren't to help people - they were to enslave us, people of color in particular. Giving up your freedoms for perceived safety & help. Read up on the Southern Stategy, conservative swine. Dixiecrats, i.e., Southerns Dems, were always conservative. Party labels change over time and parties always undergo realignment. During the civil rights era, Dems started to court blacks, and the Dixiecrats left the party in droves and are now Republicans.
