Forget the pitch problems peppered throughout this performance, she literally had to shriek her way through the chorus to even be able to reach the notes. And her ridiculously harsh pronounciation of "dreamt a hundred thousand dreams before" illustrates how far she was in over her head with this song.

@demonhoopa I don't think that's always necessarily true; some people won't respond to a negative/harsh opinion because often the best policy is to simply ignore it...but I think it's all based on a matter of preference rather than a matter of fact. Everything in art is preference especially which is "better". However, whether or not someone is straining to hit notes is a matter of fact, it can be measured. And I guarantee you that any vocal coach worth their salt will confirm that Diana is straining and Fantasia is not.
If straining to get through a song to the degree that your body is locked in a rigid posture is someone's preference, that's ok.
@demonhoopa She is visibly straining but I don't think it's a problem that's impossible to fix. A vocal coach taught me that emotional tension can have a huge impact on the quality of one's singing. I've observed both Fantasia and Diana closely and they have their strengths and weaknesses just like any other artist. They both have good voices but I just personally prefer Diana's. If you prefer Fantasia's, cool, but please respect that everyone's tastes are not 100% identical.

This performance pretty much is on the edge with Fantasia's version but the thing is, her performances during the showdown was a complete disaster especially her second performance of Don't Cry Out Loud.
When I saw that she did that performance in the finals, I never questioned the decision.
At the end she belts it out. She's got a very good control over her belting. I really like it :). I think the song also would have been a big hit with Diana. But the song was obviously made for Fantasia :)
For all of you saying she sucks you obviously didnt watch this season. Unfortuantely, diana was weirdly not as good on the finale probs cause she was nervous (i mean she was 16!!!). What really bakes my noodle is that the vote for this was a slim paper thin margin. Fantasia BARELY one the vote after giving arguably the most powerful finals performance in the history of the show. Then again, after the debacle of Adam Lambert and Crystal Bowersox losing to inferior competition the last two years, America's voting should not surprise me.

I'm not going to criticize diana; she was just a kid. She definitely didnt have a good night. but in all fairness to Diana Degarmo this was a gospel tinged song that was a better fit for Fantasia; miss thing had to kill it.

Diana played it harder than Fantasia (she has a bigger range and shows it off), her high notes are a lot cleaner (Fantasia ALWAYS growls and yells on her high notes), and the most important part, she doesn't need to over-emote songs or dance around the stage to convince the audience and the judges. This performance pretty much is on the edge with Fantasia's version but the thing is, her performances during the showdown was a complete disaster especially her second performance of Don't Cry Out Loud.
When I saw that she did that performance in the finals, I never questioned the decision.

For all of you saying she sucks you obviously didnt watch this season. Unfortuantely, diana was weirdly not as good on the finale probs cause she was nervous (i mean she was 16!!!). Al other weeks shee was amazing. Just look at her rendition of dont cry out loud!!!! and this was not even that bad. SHE MADE KELLY CLARKSON CRY DURING THIS PERFORMANCE (as ryan said at the end). in the end, she lost by 3% of votes whcih means fantasia couldnt have neen so much better. i think diana is farr better!!!

What really bakes my noodle is that the vote for this was a slim paper thin margin. Fantasia BARELY one the vote after giving arguably the most powerful finals performance in the history of the show. Then again, after the debacle of Adam Lambert and Crystal Bowersox losing to inferior competition the last two years, America's voting should not surprise me.

beginning and middle i thought ok disaster...but the end was amazing theres no denying that...when comparing the 2 songs..Fantasia is pretty pitchy is some places... dont get me wrong obviously the good undoubtly outweighed the bad by a mile and trust me fantasia absolutely wipes the floor with Diana with the song...but I think the MAJOR difference is that Fantasia really wanted it more, like you could really really feel her emotion in the song whereas Diana was just singing a song well...

@a999op the girl is like, 26 years old, she's only 3 years older than me, she isn't ancient old to the point where she would only relate to "older" audiences. I would rather have a larger audience than just one type of person, it gets your music played faster. I don't listen to "mainstream radio" because it's the same song every 20 minutes.

Ever since Diana came in runner-up at only 16 nearly 7 years ago, people have forgotten how amazing of a vocalist Diana still is. Diana OWNS this song by miles! Diana played it harder than Fantasia (she has a bigger range and shows it off), her high notes are a lot cleaner (Fantasia ALWAYS growls and yells on her high notes), and the most important part, she doesn't need to over-emote songs or dance around the stage to convince the audience and the judges. Just listen to that last note... there's no way Fantasia could do that EVER in her life!

While Fantasia has been on and off drugs, going bankrupt and putting her trashy family on television, Diana has been extremely successful starring in multiple Broadway shows since idol. She just left Hair for the pre-production of a new show where she will be originating her role. Now I'm no going to sit here and say who should have won, but lets get our facts straight.
