Oh my!! I am quite disappointed to see this. I mean, you don't expect that "one of the greatest scientific minds of our time" would stoop so low as to DO A TELEVISION COMMERCIAL!!! And not only that, then he goes ahead and allows his "voice" to be used by Pink Floyd on one of their songs!! Does he really need the cash that badly? I don't think so. In my mind, this is simply a sellout for money, and puts a big dent in his motivation for anything else he says or does.
@Frozensquirrel Fine. You don't like "sellout" because it has negative conotations. I can live with that. The real question becomes, "is someone else manipulating that voice synthesizer of his?" I really find it hard to imagine why the "greatest mind of our times" made a friggin phone company commercial. Okay, maybe "sellout" is too much. How about, "pathetic"? The next thing you will tell me is that he refused payment because next to physics, he deeply admires the phone company. Gag me.
@BombShelterChoir There's no way of knowing what his motivations were for sure, so your opinion is as good as mine. Being a huge supporter (and having a huge interest) in communication I just really love this quote. Maybe he thinks about the topic as strongly as I do and wanted a place to voice it. Or maybe he just wanted to be on a commercial (which is something I would personally love, haha).
@Frozensquirrel Well, I respect your opinion and I understand the rationale of your support. I admire your intelligence and logic. I am just surprised that Stephen Hawking, who could afford to make his own commercial to promote communication, participates with a commercial business endeavor. In my opinion, it just makes him appear materialistic and a "brand promoter" rather than a promoter of what is good and true.
What pretentious fuck crap - a translation of what he is saying - give me a big enough check and I will sell any old shit you like. Lesson when it comes to money mankind are all gready fucking pigs that will fuck you over or suck you off if you pay them enough. Even Steven Hawkins will peddle your shit if you offer him enough cash - what a fucking world we live in.
I have No idea where you could find just the speech without the music but you reckon it would be easier to find a Steven hawking voice emulator and make it yourself? im sure there must be one somewhere
and its greatest failures by not talking. it doesn't have to be like this. our greatest hopes could become reality in the future. with the technology at our disposal the possibilities are unbounded. all we need to do is make sure we keep talking.
for millions of years, mankind lived just like the animals. then something happened which unleashed the power of our imagination. we learned to talk. we learned to listen. speech has allowed the communication of ideas, enabling human beings to work together, to build the impossible. mankind's greatest achievements have come about by talking;
i based my animated film on this commercial and Stephen Hawking's words. I wonder if these were Stephen's own words or if BT gave them to him to speak. In any case, I believe so strongly in this message. I'll be uploading my film soon.
I forgot now what made me think about this advert, but I'm so glad I found it. Bit surprised that it's the only copy on here and, like some others, I would have liked to have seen a better quality version, but it's the voice and the music that does it for me, so thank you, tciking, for uploading it.
OMG I have looked for this ad for about ten years solid on the net. It only ran for a month or two on British TV and I never saw it again. Thanks for posting it so much. One of the best ads EVER.
Great quality:

@BombShelterChoir How come whenever anyone does anything someone has to shout "SELLOUT!?"

Why can't adverts still be as meaningful as this?

Wow...
That's beautifully well said, and so deeply delivered considering Hawking's situation.
