Hey there dogtrainingworks, I can't help myself from feeling a bit repelled off from what you're saying.
In my opinion this cannot be the case or the workaround for every dog I can only use my own as an example.
My dog eats human food (very rarely without having obeyed an order to receive it though) and it's allowed anywhere I am, couch, bed etc. I pet him whenever i want nomatter if he has been submissive or not.
And the result is that my dog DOES know I'm the alpha dog ---
