what does this mean, preproduction demo? how many demos do you usually make as a band?

tons, some bands would make 100 different versions of the same song till it sounded right, preproduction means the band recorded it on whatever they had before the producers got ahold of it, to give them a sort of outline of what it'd be like, and sometimes so they could remember how it goes, then the production team would get them to redo it on a better sound system and make changes to it and stuff
