I agree that there were balance problems through much of it. That being said, the tone was good, intonation was relatively quite good, expression was good... aside from the balance problems, this is a very good performance. And this is coming from a music teacher.

I LOVE IT.... being a concert choir singer at heart this gives me great pleasure. I don't get a chance to sing like this now that I have graduated from school And Attending a Gospel church doesn't give many opportunities to sing this style of music. But I LOVED IT..
i have heard gospel versions and this..i love them all..this is just an amazing song and you guys sounded awesome!!!! and the sopranos came through which is the most important part of this song
Well, I wanted to listen to how the choir would sound on this song.. because i've heard so many different ways of singing this song... so I was interested in listening to it... And I thought i was magnificent... good job, and well done.. the song was beautiful... and the sopranos' OMG'sh.. .. well done.. well done....
why is it that so many people on this choir lack confidence? I can see it in their posture. But i like this version, it is different and refreshing. Personally I don't like when choirs have their hands at their sides, it looks very awkward. I like when the hands are behind the back, or there is movement, it makes the individuals look less 'mannequin like'. but that's just my opinion.
As a member of BOTH the Moses Hogan Chorale and Singers, this interpretation isn't that bad at all....Moses didn't arrange spirituals for one race to do it better than the other or for it to cause division amongst those of us that have a joy of singing them. The only suggestion I would have is that there would be more "joy" and understanding when singing this piece and others like it. Moses ALWAYS wrote it EXACTLY what he wanted..nothing more, nothing less.
i believe this song was beautifully done, the way the director taught the parts and the presentation is nice..there are thousands of gospel song with thousands of different renditions....let's remember that in God's eyes there is not "black way or white way" just God's way ....I really enjoyed
YOU GUYS SANG BEAUTIFULLY!!! and the ones that are making those racist comments are the same ones that the choir director made get on the back pew to be an usher because they made his alto section sing off key!
I think they did a nice job. I'm an African American man and I'm also here to say, don't let negatives posts on here discourage you. This choir did a nice job of this song. I actually used to sing with the choir that originally recorded this song in 1991. Wilmington Chester Mass Choir.
I'm an African American female and your song is beautiful. Don't let others dismay from being about the Lord's work. As in fashion different people have different styles of speaking and singing. Your song is giving praise and glory to God nothing else mattered. They talked about Jesus Christ they'll certainly talk about you. Keep on keeping on.

It's a wonderful performance considering they only had 10 days to get it. It would have been an even better performance if they made it more spirited.
I am black and I feel that they were singing from there hearts and honoring God. What's wrong with that? When praises go up blessings come down. Everyone doesn't have to sing a song the same way every time. Different interpretations doesn't change the intention behind the praise. Good job!
To say that this song is really good, but the men need to sing louder. I mean the sppranos and altos are surpassing them. It is lame T-T. OH god when the women hit that Bb oh god i was all like Yessss!!!!!!!!!!!!! Amazing other wise. ^-^
@scookie14 GOD BLESS THEM!! In this day and age they could be singing God knows what, God knows where and with who, whom?.....Give these kids a break! Ya'll haters make memad!
@scookie14 Moses Hogan did a masterful job arranging this classic spiritual! It is available for SSAA or SATB voices. I believe that it sounds best for women's voices, as in this performance. The piano part is also skillfully written and performed. These women have done a nice job performing this spiritual. Moses Hogan has done a great service to America, arranging most all of the classic spirituals, and making them available to all choirs to perform. This has been his life work. Great!

We sung this song at my church today. I'm in the choir,Saint Pauls Choir. i f you've never been there you should come for are easter sevice. It'll be spectacular.
I am black also and this is real singing!!! You don't always have to scrawl and holler every song for the LORD. The Lord here it all! As long as we give him all the Praise!!! GREAT SONG BY THE WAY!!!
Lovely! Remember there are many different interpretations of this song. Some groups perform it as a traditional gospel. However, this arrangement is a spiritual which is quite different from gospel.
I am African American, a soprano, and a choir teacher, and I thoroughly enjoyed your performance. It was very well done. The blend is lovely, I could hear all the parts, and excellent job at the end, sopranos! How can you expect cultural understanding if people do not get to experience the music of other ethnicities? I applaud the director for choosing the song, and applaud the choir for doing a good job.
Thank you so much for your comment! I completely agree with you. It's disappointing that many who watch a video of a performance go off of what they want to see instead of all the hard work that is actually there. Here's to hoping that we can all appreciate art for what it is!
@1212musicmom1212 Whatever maestro! Im sure we can still all agree an all black evangelist choir sends this song soaring into the chambers of god himself! It is proof that no one other people loves Jesus more than black folks!
@MattyTheMole I do not deny that fact that a Black choir may "send this song soaring" I do sing Gospel also. But I have to call you on the comment that "no one loves Jesus more than Black folks". That is an unfair, untrue, and racist statement. As MzStylesExperience said, "there is no "black way or white way", just God's way.
If you say that another group sings this song better than this, then I accept your opinion. But if you say that this group is worse because they are white then it doesn't matter how kindly you phrase it, your being racist.
I personally think they did a good job if they only practiced for a week.
you know, people from the african culture have a natural something in their blood for music like this, so NATURALLY they will sound better when they do it, per se, but for a choir who doesn't have this natural feeling, this is an EXCELLANT rendition. Bravissimo!
Why does everything have to be about race. Good gracious. I actually like the song even though the words aren't correct. Also you said it was learned and performed in a week. Did you guys ever perform it again. If so do you have that video? Even though I think it's fine! BRAVO!!
Performed once, this was the South Dakota Honors choir from 2007. We got together for a week, learned the music and had a performance at the end of the week.
who cares that it sounds too white? Who cares as long as the music is still being performed! I love it. I rather see this then a rap video with blacks with their pant half way their butts talking about sex all the time. I love this Bravi
Girls sound a bit shrill. (Could be the acoustics) Also, it's a tad bit slower than it was written so it doesn't flow as well as it should be. The last critique is the mess-up on piano.
The rest sounded great! Great job soloists! Bravo!
Everyone has different clothes on because this is the 2007 South Dakota Honors Choir. We met for a week and put this concert together. Obviously, we were not going to all order the same dresses or tuxes for this one concert. I'm sorry its so distracting though.
Nice job all i have to say is sing with some expression! OMG you guys all look dead! And the girl at the end who looked up just shows she's kinda bored. All i have to say is sing with some expression and it will make it a million times better!
I loved this song when my high school did it 3 years ago.
Gotta love that first soprano part!
I think this is an excellent job! It's a good version, especially since it is WRITTEN AND ARRANGED that way... it's not supposed to be a gospel song. But it is a great song for an SSAA choir. Good job!
There is nothing wrong with the video. The choir just did a different arrangement. People kill me with their ignorance, they hear a song one way and assume that's the way it goes which in reality that may not be the original song but it was arranged another way by someone else....for all the ignorant people..Get a life!!..go read a book!!
A church that I used to attend sang this song, but it was arranged a little differently. I appreciate the difference in both styles. mtd3vv, don't worry. I thought it sounded pretty decent.
Great tone- Sopranos-woah-overpowering, though. I know whomever posted this had nothing to do with blending and overall mixture of sound, but if I was conducting that group, I would have had about 30 Sopranos jump down to Alto 1 and put some more uuumph on the lower parts-they were very understated. HOWEVER, the tone quality of the parts that were most audible was surprisingly crisp and clean-ESPECIALLY for a high school choir-which I'm assuming this is.
I think you guys sound great!!! The best i've heard that song sang...U guys sound very heavenly....and this is coming from a black male not that, that matters but keep up the good work!!!
you peep's did excellent. excellent blending with the solo's that's amazing usually you would have some one trying to out sing the other's but good. and the soul thing come on please leave them . not every can feel EVERY song they sing. they did good. were singing this at all state choir marshill search it on here . =]
Ignore any rude comments. There wasn't much emoting going on, but the sound was great. There was a wonderful blend, and I really enjoyed listening to this.
I thought this was well done. On the other hand it lacked spirit and life. Go checkout the african american gospel choirs on youtube to get a flavor of what I am talking about. I am a grad student at a prestigious music college and it seems college choirs sing techinically correct but lack the one essential element that makes music have/....REAL SPIRIT AND HEART AND DEEP FEELING FOR THE LORD. Go check out the soweto gospel choir on youtube.
It sounds to me like the piece you are (were) singing is actually Ride on Jesus by R. Nathaniel Dett. Which is a great piece as well, and represents a much earlier approach to the setting of negro spirituals in the choral idiom. You should also hear a great solo recording of the same piece, the solo came first then the choral arrangement both by Dett. Try Florence Quivar's recording; Ride On, King Jesus which is a great album if you love spirituals.
This is great, what are you talking about in your info section? It's different than what most people are used to when hearing this particular song, but it definitely isn't horrible by any means.
i agree with the person below me. You guys did a fantasic job. I have played this song on the piano numerous times an di have played it with a black gospel choir. and though its a lil tough it is so much fun to play. Again amazing job it gave me chills as im sure it did for many in the audience.
Actually this isnt stiff...when i was in advanced chorus in high school this is the way i learned it and it was a prominently black school in the hood so to speak...it is a negro spiritual not a gospel tune..we took it and changed it later...so this was well done...
hey cpatter no need for all dat ok but i thought it sounded nice our choir at my skool are doing this also !!! ( yall r wayyyyy better))) hahah luv it and the ppl who worked hard to do this ! awsome! mwahh
it's so stiff, gospel shouldn't be that stif fat the solos that's the only thing i noticed that i didn't like, we had one soloist [who was me] and you had to really get into it none of you did.
itsdevanyo I totally agree. Gospel music makes you move and feel the power of God in a deep and shouting meaningful way. This was just a dry college style performance probably for a grade in a class and that is it.
great job, but the only thing I didn't like was all the moving back and forth between the verses. I feel that the small group should've stayed in place until they were finished with all the verses then re-join the rest of the choir. BUT THAT IS JUST MY OPINION!!!!! But Great job I throughly enjoyed listening to the honor choir.
I think that this is a great performance. Yes, it is suppose to be a negro spiritual. But from the musical prospective it is a job well done. It maybe could go a little faster but other than that, it is good. I don't have the piece in front of me, but i think it was learned by the choir very well. Most people do not understand how complicated it is to teach a choral piece to a large choir. Very good job on this!
Remember, you're voices are not determined by what others think about you. This is a great performance, because you are very original in your performance. I wish you the best and remember that if you are having heated discussions. That means people are attracted to your video for some reason. You just may help to save them and help them meet Jesus. That is your ultimate goal, I believe.
....ok, if the dresses are taking away to much from the performance, don't look at them, just listen to the music. And just to also let everyone know, this was the all girls arrangement of this song.
While I am a fan of the livelier versions, my first love is this rendition written by Moses Hogan. He was truly a musical genius, and he is arguably one of the heavyweights in modern choral music production. He's missed!!!
you know this is Moses Hogan's arrangement of this. I do believe he was black and felt that everyone could take part in singing the spirtuals. I think this wonderful! I also think Moses would have been impressed. I definitely sang in the last choir he conducted here on earth in 2002 and know what he would like.
i think this is sooo great! Granted I do love the Black Gospel version. But I was in a choral choir and I can APPRECIATE the WORK that went into this. Job Well Done!!!
Now it sad to see people who disencourage music and musical expression. Now I am Black and I thought this was a beautiful rendition of Ride On King Jesus. Since when has music has such a defined label. Music is an expression in which individual from all over the world can take a gift and unite to create something beautiful. I say every song doesnt have to be a copy or a mimic it should be unique to the individuals who sing it. Great JOB!!!
I am sorry that everyone believes that this song is performed so horribly. I just want to remind everyone that nobody is forcing you to watch this video, you can turn it off and go outside or something, and we weren't doing this song to copy Black Gospel choir. We were simply singing a song that we thought would be fun to do. Thanks.
I guess I understand that it is an Honors Choir, and I've never heard an All-State/Honors Choir perform anything good... Its just a bunch of good singers, trying to outsing eachother
You know, you would think after you turned it off the first time, you wouldn't come back...but I guess some people are just like that. Thanks for the comment though.
I think it's a sad commentary on society that a choir performing a spiritual song is attacked by so many people. Ironic in the worst way to see so much hate coming to head over a song about Jesus.
Maybe the people in the video aren't as good as you think they should be. Maybe their skin color is lighter than you would prefer. But if you feel the need to post vitriol about them, I have to wonder why. Where is this hate coming from?
This is a bad representation of Moses Hogan and a spiritual. There is too much pop singing going on, where is the beautiul why are the sopranos so under pitch and trying to reach for notes please get it together
How fucking stupid! its only women! =/ Sorry but this piece was written for SATB there are plenty of guys there. Moses hogans music is mostly famous because it features the basses..you can't sing one of his pieces without basses, sorry, this director was retarded
Im sorry but it was VERY poorly preformed.. They sounded VERY southern.. A gospel is not to sound all proper but the words are supposed to be sung correctly? Very poor diction =/
little slower would be cool, but good for most part

star2dasky 2 years ago 4

Good job!
alexthegreat08 2 years ago
There is nothing wrong with the video. The choir just did a different arrangement. People kill me with their ignorance, they hear a song one way and assume that's the way it goes which in reality that may not be the original song but it was arranged another way by someone else....for all the ignorant people..Get a life!!..go read a book!!
Dessie2010 2 years ago

CaramelSista08 3 years ago
you peep's did excellent. excellent blending with the solo's that's amazing usually you would have some one trying to out sing the other's but good. and the soul thing come on please leave them . not every can feel EVERY song they sing. they did good. were singing this at all state choir marshill search it on here . =]

Ignore any rude comments. There wasn't much emoting going on, but the sound was great. There was a wonderful blend, and I really enjoyed listening to this.

It wasn't for a grade in a class. It was a high school choir camp.

We are singing a song called ride on king jesus but it's different it goes:
Ride on king Jesus
ride on king jesus
Ride Ride Conquering King
I wanna go to heaven in the morning.
It's rather very diferent isn't it?
Carlee01beth 3 years ago
Poor white people ain't got no soul in em. :(
Just kidding.
HEADBANGING69 3 years ago
It sounds to me like the piece you are (were) singing is actually Ride on Jesus by R. Nathaniel Dett. Which is a great piece as well, and represents a much earlier approach to the setting of negro spirituals in the choral idiom. You should also hear a great solo recording of the same piece, the solo came first then the choral arrangement both by Dett. Try Florence Quivar's recording; Ride On, King Jesus which is a great album if you love spirituals.
pdmorg02 2 years ago
This is great, what are you talking about in your info section? It's different than what most people are used to when hearing this particular song, but it definitely isn't horrible by any means.

i agree with the person below me. You guys did a fantasic job. I have played this song on the piano numerous times an di have played it with a black gospel choir. and though its a lil tough it is so much fun to play. Again amazing job it gave me chills as im sure it did for many in the audience.
LifesWorthLivin 3 years ago
Who thought the song was performed badly? I think you guys did a great job. Loved the harmony!
mslady247365 3 years ago
we are singing exactly this version in chorus...
a lot of the girls call it a "gosperatic" piece--
gospel/operatic.
it isn't pure gospel, so obviously it's a bit more structured and prim and proper-sounding--
"stiff," as some people have said.
i didn't know there was more than one version,
but the other version is indeed a lot more lively.
not that this isn't incredibly lovely.
^_^
thank you so much for putting it up!
BadLuckCherry 3 years ago
Actually this isnt stiff...when i was in advanced chorus in high school this is the way i learned it and it was a prominently black school in the hood so to speak...it is a negro spiritual not a gospel tune..we took it and changed it later...so this was well done...
people are going to hate no matter what
mstanya60 3 years ago
We're hopefully doing this song for one of our concerts this year. Great job!! I liked this version much more than the level 4 version. ^^
And I wish we could have performed in prom dresses...lol

Very operatic but it is an interesting take on a classical gospel song. Great work!
kolstein2005 3 years ago
To the negative ones:
1. Do you know Who they are singing about?
2. If so, do you think He died and left permission for you to be critical about someone's singing style?
3. If you don't know Him, guess what? He didn't give any of us permission to act unbecomingly.
4. He died to give all believers a way to live forever.
5. If you choose not to believe, I hope you change your mind before it is too late.
6. Manwhile, my Mom says IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANYHING NICE TO SAY, DON'T SAY ANYTHING.

It sounds like it was written, very enjoyable.
My choir did this song last year, but we had men in our choir.
It sounds better without them, personally.
Wonderlandslost 3 years ago
the style is what you make it. this was a great performance.
musicAL722 3 years ago
it's so stiff, gospel shouldn't be that stif fat the solos that's the only thing i noticed that i didn't like, we had one soloist [who was me] and you had to really get into it none of you did.
itsdevanyo 3 years ago
itsdevanyo I totally agree. Gospel music makes you move and feel the power of God in a deep and shouting meaningful way. This was just a dry college style performance probably for a grade in a class and that is it.

u guys hit that shit!!!! and i like this version better, and i think that the choir did AWESOME!!!!!!

I did this song at Pebblebrook. You all are their Chamber Choir material. you keep on singing and ignore the h8trs
Rami22789 3 years ago
great job, but the only thing I didn't like was all the moving back and forth between the verses. I feel that the small group should've stayed in place until they were finished with all the verses then re-join the rest of the choir. BUT THAT IS JUST MY OPINION!!!!! But Great job I throughly enjoyed listening to the honor choir.
anointed1choirmaster 3 years ago
I think that this is a great performance. Yes, it is suppose to be a negro spiritual. But from the musical prospective it is a job well done. It maybe could go a little faster but other than that, it is good. I don't have the piece in front of me, but i think it was learned by the choir very well. Most people do not understand how complicated it is to teach a choral piece to a large choir. Very good job on this!
bosendorferpianoman 3 years ago
This doesnt sound very much like a negro spiritual which is what its suppose to be.

Remember, you're voices are not determined by what others think about you. This is a great performance, because you are very original in your performance. I wish you the best and remember that if you are having heated discussions. That means people are attracted to your video for some reason. You just may help to save them and help them meet Jesus. That is your ultimate goal, I believe.
lantern4christ 3 years ago
when you dont match as a group
it takes away from the performance too
much going on with the dresses.
cant hear the guysss..
stlouisrams1081 3 years ago
....ok, if the dresses are taking away to much from the performance, don't look at them, just listen to the music. And just to also let everyone know, this was the all girls arrangement of this song.

yeah, i was in this choir and i am really glad that you posted the songs!

yes there is, which I think is weird over a choir video. Thats not exactly what I expected.

While I am a fan of the livelier versions, my first love is this rendition written by Moses Hogan. He was truly a musical genius, and he is arguably one of the heavyweights in modern choral music production. He's missed!!!
apotd 3 years ago
you know this is Moses Hogan's arrangement of this. I do believe he was black and felt that everyone could take part in singing the spirtuals. I think this wonderful! I also think Moses would have been impressed. I definitely sang in the last choir he conducted here on earth in 2002 and know what he would like.

Great JOB!!!
ajallenaga 3 years ago 4
Thank you for saying beautifully what I have failed to say properly. I whole heartedly agree. Thank you.
mtd3vv 3 years ago
I am sorry that everyone believes that this song is performed so horribly. I just want to remind everyone that nobody is forcing you to watch this video, you can turn it off and go outside or something, and we weren't doing this song to copy Black Gospel choir. We were simply singing a song that we thought would be fun to do. Thanks.
mtd3vv 3 years ago
I did turn it off, because it WAS so awful
JustinTCoulter 3 years ago
Thank you, I'm glad someone is taking my advice for once.
mtd3vv 3 years ago
I guess I understand that it is an Honors Choir, and I've never heard an All-State/Honors Choir perform anything good... Its just a bunch of good singers, trying to outsing eachother
JustinTCoulter 3 years ago
You know, you would think after you turned it off the first time, you wouldn't come back...but I guess some people are just like that. Thanks for the comment though.
mtd3vv 3 years ago
I think it's a sad commentary on society that a choir performing a spiritual song is attacked by so many people. Ironic in the worst way to see so much hate coming to head over a song about Jesus.
Maybe the people in the video aren't as good as you think they should be. Maybe their skin color is lighter than you would prefer. But if you feel the need to post vitriol about them, I have to wonder why. Where is this hate coming from?
wylkyn 2 years ago 2
NOOOOOOO!!!!! THIS IS SO WRONG!!!!!!
hut765 3 years ago
This is a bad representation of Moses Hogan and a spiritual. There is too much pop singing going on, where is the beautiul why are the sopranos so under pitch and trying to reach for notes please get it together
linkyk 3 years ago
Hello? This is Moses Hogan! A spiritual! As in some facial expressions and movement would be nice. But the vocals were ok other than that.

How fucking stupid! its only women! =/ Sorry but this piece was written for SATB there are plenty of guys there. Moses hogans music is mostly famous because it features the basses..you can't sing one of his pieces without basses, sorry, this director was retarded
