Absoloute legend, never knew he was born in Johanessburg, always thought he was Cockney, maybe thats cos he played the parts so well, but watching lot of these clips on here, you can sense the accent now.
Sid James was my hero when I was little, my parents used to watch Carry On Up The Khyber all the time and it just sorta rubbed off on me. Up the Khyber is still my favourite, even though i now own close to all the carry on's! Thankyou for posting this little clip. (is it just me or does sid james always look the same, no matter how old he is?)
@thatobsessed4eva you are right that loveable craggy face never changed over the years. He died too young but what a way to go. On stage to the laughter of the audience being the last thing he heard and looking down the cleavage of an actress. God bless you Sid the world is a poorer place without you.
He was very likable as a performer. The limitation of his appeal only becomes clear in Hancock's Half Hour, where, beside Tony Hancock, you kind of wish he'd go away.
well u can understand that what with it being "Hancocks Half Hour" not the sid and tone show, also Hancock always moved on and he did respect Sid for his advice, see the documentary also on youtube called the unseen hancock and hear the touching things sid says about tony its really quite heartbreaking
Image him doing shakespear?? You bet! Richard II, Bottom, Lord Capulet, Polonius, George from Rich III, the gate guard from McB, any of a number of roles in Taming of the Shrew, and probably best of all, Sir Toby Belch from Twelvth Night.
sid, you woulda been great in Shakespeare! The dooman in Macbeth, Polonius in Hamlet (or the Gravedigger!), Clarence in Richard III, TONS of roles with you written all over 'em.
What? You can be an icon of British film wherever you're from , as long as the films are British . There are a lot of people in Britain who consider themselves British and Jewish . One's their nationality , the other their faith .
@TheDiddlysquat if what you say is true, than his real persona fits perfectly the Sid James in Hancock's half hour. anyway, he's very very loveable.

Actually, when playing with Hancock, it was always Sid that made me laugh. I wished Tony would go away!
hiyadroogs 3 years ago
They were actually regarded as a bit of a double act which is why Hancock fired him.
Sid was also VERY important in directing alot of the scenes including camera shots and where Tony, and others, should be standing or facing.
He was technically accomplished and a legend!
