  • You conquered me! I knew somehow this had to be. What a great interpretation. Mr. Cole, my hat is off.

  • Such a sweet song...

  • Rod who Stewart?

  • Rod Stewart sings it better.

  • @barokkorab Oh for crying out loud, no chance. Next you're going to tell me Brian Ferry sings this better than Nat also. No offense to Rod Stewart, but he can't stand up to Nat on this song.

  • @barokkorab

OHMYACHINGSIDES!!! Rod Stewart sings this better than NAT?? That's the best laugh I've gotten all year! Thanks for your achingly bad judgment & poor taste, barokkorab!

    Sign Me- LMAO

  • Nat at His peak-AND with the world's greatest arranger....

  • from the album "Just One Of Those Things", with Billy May Orchestra. The whole album is just wonderful.

  • It was written about Anna May Wong

  • fabuleux,

  • Yet another definitive indelible interpretation of a standard by the King.

  • This is absolutely perfect.

  • Not surprising that Nat King Cole is ranked the #1 male Jazz singer of all-time! So pure, so simple, perfect pitch,...I agree with many of the other comments,...where has all the great music gone?

  • Beautiful song

  • Whatever happened to this? Why is our world so vile in it's melody, so spoiled in it's tunes? These foolish things remind me of the good times!

By the way, I'm fourteen years old. I don't like "Rap" or "Country" but Metal and 50's classics are the greatest things ever!

  • This might be the graphic designer in me, but that blue closing apostrophe "These Foolish Things "(blue) bugged me the whole time.

    These foolish things!

  • Perfect music to cuddle up and stay warm to on a cold night like this!

  • absolutely.

  • My mum who has now passed away loved this guy but I was into Led Zeppelin and Free and other rock bands and couldnt see what she liked about him, but I guess a lot of peoples tastes change as they get older and mine certainly have, I think Nat King Cole is superb and thank you for putting this on you tube. I love this song/

  • My then g-friend, and now wife, and I used to listen to this lovely song when we used to date and we still love it as much as ever...

  • i learned to play this song on piano but have never heard it sung. this is absolutly beutiful

  • we love you Anna May!

  • @LibertarianBiker

    yes we do.

  • still moves me

  • what a fantastic arrangement by Billy May - pure genius! Sweet, seductive, grinding and Nat's vocals are, well, incomparable! He swings and purrs through this one with such ease and style. Boy what a song! 2'33 - 3'08 just builds and builds!!!

  • We will never hear songs like this ever again, no one knows how to write them.

  • @MrLostHorizons They may not be written anymore, but some of them are still presented and performed live from Max Raabe's Palastorchester. Look at here: "watch?v=vlRBcX_ujgg" and go to minute 6:50. He preforms quite a few Cole Porter songs because he loves them. Ok - it is not like the original, but better than nothing too ;). He performs also "This foolish thing". Cheek to Cheek. Under my skin. And he does it nowadays in 2010, together with a brilliant orchestra.

  • Why dont they write song like this anymore??

  • No one knows how to, they just don't know how to write romantic music.

  • @bamboodraws Just my opinion. The world is getting darker, cruder, and more vulgar. These beautiful sentiments in this song are not alive any more in contemporary artist. Look that the piece of feces ga ga and you can see and hear it on display. Beauty doesn't sell, vulgarity does. It will even get worse. I despise new music.

  • @IrmaCerrutti nasty

  • When I think of my mother at the piano, this song would be one of the first she played. Thank Mom, this song reminds me of you...

  • there is no doubt that this song is one of the most beautiful songs on the planet...if only music could go back in time to when it was real like this, when it was beautiful and about the kinda love we all need to be reminded of....

  • true. Even though it's not comparable, I like the work of those who bring it back nowadays. They keep it alive and make it mainstream... they're not the same. These "oldies" had a vibe and a consistence that will never be reproduced, but still, someone reminds us of them with their work. Such as Connick Jr, Buble, Botti, Krall...and so many others.

  • I''m on the cusp of a spiritual experience when I hear this song

  • Follow by the legendary Sammy Davis Jr.

  • Simply.....The Very Best!!!!

  • Hearing this song is like feeling the frostdust silver my beaver collar as I sleigh past the river Neva, off to a ball where the young girls shall train their lorgnettes upon me.

  • Nat King Cole is the master! Please don't mention a joke like Rod Stewart in the same breath. To think he is making a mint selling his retreads to yuppies is sickning. I love how the arrangement picks up tempo twords the end. Very classy, this is the real thing! "The park at midnight when the bell has sounded".

  • I agree with you 100% I am glad that there is somebody else out there that feels the same way I do. Stewart shouldn't be allowed to touch a song from The Great American Songbook. His voice is HORRIBLE!

  • Why does this comment refer to 'American' songbook? Wasn't the lyricist a Cambridge man with a connection with the BBC? And the lyrical 'you' a lady called Anna Wong? As to taste and fancy for versions, check out the Carroll Gibbons one. Vocals by Turner Layton, with the best 'BBC english' ever sung by an american?

  • So true. Have a listen to the Billie Holiday version, also sublime.

  • You really need a soulful voice to pull it off for this song. Both Nat King Cole and Rod Steward are my my favorite singers for this song.

  • dont forget Sam Cooke

  • I could listen to this voice 24/7 for years and never get bored. Thats how good nat kings voice sounds. Legend.

  • My favorite version of this song ever! Thanks for posting.

  • Great Version!

  • i love the part where he sings, a tinkling piano in the next apartment, and the piano plays a few keys, it sounds so flirtatious! :)

  • @alternativeX94Xrock

that sounds even better and adding some more in bryan ferry's version

  • still my favourite version of this song. he sings it so lovely.

  • Wonderful - reminds me of the man I love...

  • Fabuloso como siempre N K C!!!!

  • Hello,

Thanks very much for sharing this wonderful romantic song with us, we enjoyed the singing of Nat King Cole very much.

Best regards Chris and Mayka from The Netherlands - Europe - YouTube chrismayka.

  • I'm waiting for Natalie's version. Her voice is just burnished enough now.

  • It would be nice if the composer(s) got just a little credit.

  • Words and music by Harry Link, Holt Marvell and Jack Strachey.

  • An orchestral arrangement of this piece opens up Pasolini's final film "Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom."

  • What wonderful lyrics! The essence of romance from a vanished era.Cigarette that bears a lipstick's traces/An airline ticket to romantic places. The park at evening when the bell has sounded/The Ile-de-France with all the gulls around it.The sigh of midnight trains in empty stations/silk stockings thrown aside, dance invitations. The tinkling piano in the next apartment...Ah, how the ghost of you clings...

  • One of Nat's all time greatest recordings
