Nintendo is vague on the actual relationship, but it's been established that the original Donkey Kong was Cranky Kong. It's not too much of a stretch to think that the current DK may have been DK Jr.

Rare already stated that dk jr is the DK we know of today with the tie. If you played super mario kart for the snes, you'll notice that DK jr is a lot bigger than ever.
@windkai No, I can't say I ever played that one, didn't grow up with that one, I noticed it in a players manual or something that stated that DK from Donkey Kong Country is DK Jr, and Cranky Kong is the Original DK, but then who is the DK Jr in Mario Tennis?!?
@AllHailKingKurt no mystery. That's like saying who's baby mario and baby luigi. It's them, one in the same within the game, as their former younger selves. Mario and Luigi Partners in Time kinda established an idea as to how they can appear in these game if they were truly cannon within a real timeline, but don't look into it so hard. Nintendo just simply wanted to expand the character roster set within the game.
@MrCrazyToad Well, the original hero of DK was not mario, per se. HE was referred to as "Jumpman". This is how a generational leap between Cranky and DK/Mario could occur according to most forms of fanon. NO specific offical connection besides vauge hints in the DKC games.
Donkey Kong before Country = Cranky Kong After Country.
DK Jr = Modern Donkey Kong, when Country came along.
