Handing over control to the UN would be pointless; NATO can easily afford the war in Afghanistan and western countries would put the most money toward the UN peacekeeping efforts anyway. It's a small band of powerful western nations set up to threaten the USSR - it has absolutely no justification for existing in post cold war times. What will people protest against once all our troops come home?, they will be twiddling their thumbs. I don't have a problem with protesting but like Nick Robinson, if I was trying to do my job and some goon with a sign was getting on my nerves then I'd react as well, and to the person who replied to my last comment, I have watched the news for the last 9 years and it's getting old now, but that doesn't mean I'm not sympathetic to our troops but it's their job and a fine job they are doing.

Handing over control to the UN would be pointless; NATO can easily afford the war in Afghanistan and western countries would put the most money toward the UN peacekeeping efforts anyway. NATO shouldn't withdraw until the Afghan government can adequately defend itself or the taliban have been destroyed.

@bluecode320 The point is to stop pretending that we have a right to make decisions about what happens in other countries. NATO is not the international community. It's a small band of powerful western nations set up to threaten the USSR - it has absolutely no justification for existing in post cold war times. A UN peace keeping force would reduce terrorist recruitment, give the Afghans a more trustworthy group to work with and might give us a chance of not looking like uncivilized thugs.

@inflivia NATO has more right to control Afghanistan than the Taliban does. The Taliban are totalitarians trying to set up a dictatorship to drag Afghanistan back to the bronze age; NATO is attempting to set up a democracy to guarantee at least a degree of freedom for the Afghan people.
If the UN has the same objectives as NATO with regards to Afghanistan then how can it be regarded as more trustworthy?

@inflivia The particular Afghan nationals who set up the taliban government had no more right than NATO; being born in a country does not give one the right to oppress the rest of its citizenry. NATO is the group trying to help the Afghan people set up a Democracy; the Taliban want a dictatorship.
We'd have more blood on our hands if our military withdrew and let the totalitarians take over the country. Withdrawing now wouldn't end the war; we just wouldn't have any control over its outcome.
