When this scene ended, the only thing I could feel was a deep, overwhelming feeling of sadness and rage. Like if I had been betrayed. The most incredible thing in human history, and a single person, a maniac, a madman, would destroy it just out of religious convictions.
The sad part, though, is that it could happen. I can picture this happening. I can imagine a religious extremist, no matter what his beliefs would actually be, planting a bomb in the Machine.
Contact is one of the most realistic Alien Contact movie out there, it incorporates relatively accurate Science, and most important of all, it incorporates how Religion would react when the edge of this ultimate contact is about to happen.
Unable to contain its stupidity, Religion will self destruct along with everyone else it could take with it.
I think contact is one of the best movies ever made it isnt full of way out stupid special efects from start to finish like most alien movies are now days and the story is real easy to follow again not like some of the alien moves that have been served up to us the creators of contact deserve a huge pat on the back like I said it is a fantastic movie does anyone share my view on this movie .....
Heart stopping scene, imagine spending all that money on building tbe machine only for it to be blown up. I'd definitely be like "(deep breath) FUUUUUCKKL!!!!"
Stunning visual effects and realism before its time, my favorite scene . . . I was an extra in the Congressional testimony scene, Zemeckis repeated that scene like 13-14 takes, each take seeking to capture an increasingly intense performance from Ms. Foster, the final chosen from somewhere in the middle of the bunch. Being there to experience the process was amazing.
this movie is the imagination of a good writer,,and what's the problem with you viewers, that you cannot accept what lies ahead , fiction is fiction ,until you open your minds, religion has no place here..
I just saw this today, I was utterly shocked. How they managed to really get you into it and make you feel like you just experienced that, it's amazing. Really great scene
@bman99ss Why a let down? I think it puts your thoughts in motion. It's science versus religion, and in my opinion it's an even battle in this movie. I'm atheïst myself but seeing this movie does make you understand why believers believe in the first place, or at least why they hold on to their believe so tight.
Asiats1 and Ythyn - I haven't seen the movie since its initial run, so I can't break down the ending in great detail. All I remember is being dissappointed with the encounter near the end. Perhaps I'll watch it again soon with a fresh perspective . . .
You are a legend man, thankyou for uploading, this is EPIC! All the hard work of finding the message, decoding and building this machine to culminate to this.
This sequence is one of the starkest memories I have of attending films in theaters. I saw it the day after general release in summer 1997, when there was little if any word of mouth yet. The audience had no preparation for this. That night in a local cineplex stadium theater, I experienced a cold wave of horror as it moved through the audience from the front row right up to the top row. This remains one of the few times I have felt that sort of audience emotion in a commercial theater.
@ACM1216 The guy blew it up because he was a Christian fanatic, and thought this machine will bring about the Apocalypse. (Earlier in the movie you can see him preaching against the government, science, ect.)
@AdHominus I dont know for that manner either but he has been saying that science causes destruction. this has caused a debate in this movie that science and religion can be perplexed together. God gave us the knowledge of science for our own purposes to help others or to extend ourselves to more advanced breakthroughs in our course in the future.
@zgrillo2004 Alright, but I don't see why he(crazy guy) isn't Christian. I mean Sagan himself said he was Christian.
The very idea of science is secular. Religion cannot possibly interact with science without destroying it's very ethos.
Also the plot of this movie isn't very good. First there is a deus ex machina in the form of another ship in Japan, and then lesson about faith being completely unnecessary because they had evidence to prove that she was right anyway.
@AdHominus because IMHO people who are too obsessed with religion as in zealous that would otherwise endanger people are not of any belief system. about faith. You will always have faith to prove something. I have faith too that we are not alone in this vast universe. Look at the sky at one night and imagine yourself. "wow. this is big.".
@zgrillo2004 "I have faith too that we are not alone in this vast universe. Look at the sky at one night and imagine yourself. "wow. this is big."
I have done this already, trust me. It doesn't require "faith". Faith is not necessary to believe we are not alone, thinking about the likeliness that we are the only planet with life can bring us to that conclusion.
Faith only makes you comfortable, it obliterates any unknowns. It stunts growth by restricting our boundaries.
One of my favourite movie scenes of all time. Absolutely epic! Thanks for uploading it. I guess I should get the book and read it.

Only one answer: seek your truth.

@soulierinvestments I agree, I think the only time anything like this has had a similar effect was real life terrorism with the 9/11 attacks.
