On the first chord you alternate between these two:

E - A - D - G - B - e

3 - x - 0 - 2 - 2 - x

3 - x - 0 - 4 - 3 - x

You use thumb to play the lowest string, and at the same time hold it over the A-string to mute it.

You use index finger to fret the G and B-string on the second fret,

and then you use middle and ringfinger to hammer on the G and B-string on the 4th and 3rd fret.

Was that possible to understand?

Between his pointer and middle finger. Have the "pointier" side of the pick towards your palm. It does take some practice, but it's not too hard. I use it all the time now.

Using a pick is fine, but in some cases some musicians (such as john mayer or Jeff beck, from whom John borrowed this very particular finger plucking technique -or at least Beck made it popular) finger pick to have a smoother sound. it really does make a difference, the pick has a slightly brighter and more precise sound to it, whereas fingers make it more mellow =]

But sometimes, it's just that the piece requires finger to play some parts, and a pick to play other parts (for solos)
