@Mailme81 Don't forget professional athletes were not allowed to participate in the Olympics so these are our college players going against grown men. Had our pro's been in there you bet we'd be sweeping the floor with the Russians.
@Minkki82 History is re-written everyday. I'm not sure why you think "history will always say Russians were better in these games" which I presume you meant hockey because they haven't won gold in Olympic hockey since 88 when they were the soviet union and Canada has more gold medals than them...
the russians were allies with the nazis, lost the cold war so the ussr is dead and cheated to win this game. yeah mother russia is a whore pig slut ass.
the russians followed the rules, the americans lost this game, it was a fair play, they are losing their country now, soon will be fucked upside down by the mexicans, and they are father fucker fagots with wet asses ready for a shove. Pants down yankees, the russians are coming...
@bonzie1645 That's exactly what happened. FIBA rules give the on-court officials absolute authority. Jones ORDERED the timekeeper to put 3 seconds back on the clock, thus giving the Soviets another chance AFTER the on-court officials had ruled time had expired. In direct violation of FIBA and tournament rules. The game technically isn't official-one of the officials refused to sign the scorebook.
how give evidence give specific examples, and why that is wrong, and regardless it still is disrespectful the Soviets had to be good enough to get to the final, and make it a close game.
@893160007 Why did they get two chances to inbound the basketball? The clock runs out, the game is over? No wait, the Soviets didn't score, it is not over! Get serious! Evidence!?!?!?!?!1
They called a time out, but there was score keeper error so it was not granted, the play continued, but a Soviet coach ran out to the score keeping table and the clock was stopped with 1 second. The refs then allowed the Soviets to inbound, and the clock was supposed to be at 3 seconds, since the time out was not originally given, but it had not been reseted so the buzzer went early. The clock was then reset and the play went and the Soviets score.
@893160007 Regardless the rules were still violated. Whatever the previous error may be as soon as that final clock runs out the game is over. Period, Done, No second chances. Yea the soviets would of got fucked and it would of been wrong but that's how it should of been. There were no reviewing past plays like there is today. I honostly don't care about a game 40 years ago but instead of USSR getting fucked they fucked USA. All unintentional but still very wrong.
The plays did not need to be reviewed to be proved wrong though. If there were no challenges in football or reviewed goals in hockey there would be way more controversy and games that went the wrong way.
@893160007 The timeout wasn't granted because you can't call a timeout once the ball is in the hands of the shooter during free throws (in this case, Doug Collins). Technically, the Soviets should have been assessed a technical foul for charging onto the court (violation of FIBA rules). The timeout was granted with 1 second left, then Jones (FIBA secretary-general, who has no authority during a game) wrongly ordered the scorekeeper to put 3 seconds back on the clock.
@893160007 Because they didn't. The German scorekeeper, at the press conference where the FIBA ruling was announced, directly told the head of the board (Yapp) that he was wrong on several of the facts used to back the ruling in favor of the Soviets. As he told the world, "under FIBA rules, the US won."
@893160007 Because the US team didn't earn silver, they earned gold. As the scorekeeper told everyone, under FIBA rules, the US won. The refs DID know what to do. It was a man (R. William Jones) who had no authority who changed the game.
Let me see: 3 seconds were transformed in 6 seconds. It was very weird. I'm not a patriot. I'm Brazilian. But this was very, very strange. What's up with these referees?
You don't have to be American to realize how brutal this is.
Anyone who thinks that the complaints are unjustified probably doesn't understand basketball and/or the video.
The first attempt the soviets throw the ball down the court and no shot is taken.
Then they get a second chance, the soviet player catches the ball, lands, with 3 steps which was blatant travel, also the game clock would have expired, because its physically impossible to catch a 94 ft. pass, land, take 3 steps, and shoot.
@MrEdelius Not official. The Brazilian referee didn't sign the scorebook, in fact blatantly refused to do so, in protest of the blatant rule violations. He would later declare, in press interviews, "under FIBA rules, the US won."
@partyneedsme yes a Canadian invented the game but in the USA. The game has its origins in the USA and became popular and played here first. Arguing otherwise is just be contentious for the sake of argument. Nasmith invented the game in the US taught in the US and coached in the US at the University of Kansas. French soldiers played ice hockey first in Canada so does that make ice hockey French. No its Canadian. Basketball was a game the US taught to the rest of the globe and you know this
I am not really one who understand basketball at all, but I have seen a couple games. I do not get what I just saw. It looked like 1 team took the ball from "their" end and started to work their way down the court and then went back and did it again. And then apparantly lost the ball but then got it back and then threw the ball into the court for a third time and then shot a basket and then what did time expire at that point. Does someone understand what rules are governing this?
I'm with you, can anyone explain what happened here? It didn't even look like the ball went in. Or was that a very quick ally oop? (literally only know what an ally oop is from watching Scrubs)
Ok, I cannot be bothered going around in circles, USA lost that match, simple as. By the way it was Pland, Hungary and Cuba. The Secretary I repeat again was from the WEST! Why would he let the Soviets win? Why would he be biased against the West? There is no logic...
Sorry, friend, it's not the WEST the secretary was againstc but the USA. He even later said that the "Americans must learn to lose." It grated on FIBA's leaders that the US had never lost an olympic basketball tournament. The secretary (his name's R. William Jones, btw) believed it would be "good for International basketball" if a team other than the US won an olympic tournament. It was more than east vs. west, it was a desire that someone beat the US and win, for the "good of the game."
@smartalek65 so you mean the secretary general wanted the US to lose so badly that he has to step up and do his thing taking control of the game over the refs??? is that what he mean of "The US must learn how to lose"??? that's B.S!! if they want to beat the US, beat them in a fair game.
oh by the way under the FIBA rules, the US won that game.
There was more done than what I've highlighted here. The US leading scorer (Dwight Jones) was ejected for merely raising a fist at a Soviet player who flagrantly fouled him; Jim Brewer was savagely knocked to the floor and left the game with a concussion from it; then add the savage undercut of Doug Collins; as well as the secretary-general's granting a timeout that the rules forbade (that's on top of granting the Soviets another chance). Point is, TeamUSA didn't lose, they were cheated.
What, my fine fellow? Confronted with the truth you're going to run away? You're the one touting this win as some great moment, now you find out what an unjust travesty it is. You want some Soviet team to be proud of, try the 1988 olympic team. That team was much better, had more talent and class, and won without any controversy. The names of the players on that team are legendary.
Yes, think about it this way - what if it was the other way around? USA would argue the same arguments. Claiming Political Bias is poor and besides was the Secretary not in favour of the West? Do you see you can go all day and all night arguing about this? I am going to go and play some Ball tomorrow and enjoy the game because I love it and if something controversial comes up then will vote.If I am on the losing side I will still accept my Silver medal and not cower in the corner and cry! Peace!
Sorry, that line doesn't work. The "what if?" The political bias was factual. The 3 judges voting in favor of the USSR were all from Soviet blok nations (Poland, Bulgaria, and Cuba as I recall). Don't give me some baloney story about what you say you would do. Face it, the USSR was awarded that game, by violation of the rules. That's the bottom line, friend.
Nope, sorry, FIBA's secretary made an unlawful order to put time on the clock. The on-court officials (who called the game ended after the second attempt) have complete authority, and the secretary usurped it. FIBA's own rules state this, and the secretary violated them. Further, if I were you, I wouldn't be too proud of a team that acted more like thugs in the closing moments than hoops players, especially the one that should have been ejected for the brutal fashion he fouled Doug Collins.
Forget the Secretary, this was later justified by a 5 Judge Panel, (read your history), 3 judges on appeal ruled in favour of the USSR Gold Medals, 2 ruled against, on majority you lost the appeal: FACT! Please accept this and stop crying :-) You win some, you lose some! Is that not an American saying? Take care and remember this valueable lesson from history, never give up until it is trully over, Peace!
Oh, yes, right. 3 SOVIET BLOCK judges voted in favor of USSR and the illegal action of the secretary, two (non-soviet block) judges voted against the illegal actions of the secretary. That, too, is a FACT, friend. It's hardly "crying" when someone points out the travesty that was carried out that day.
omfg I just read what happened and by all means that was insulting. If I were Russian I would not be proud of that gold medal knowing the circumstances that took place. Clearly there was some politics involved in the scoreboard and the officiating. But coldwar times what do you expect? Still they could have found more creative ways to cheat like sending them to the ft line like they do today.
I am totally lost...on the scoreboard when the first celebration is going on why does it say :50 left on the clock? Guess i am going to have to read up to see what happened here.
What a sham! Three tries at it and they win. U.S.A. won this game and were cheated, period. If you were around to watch it, it would still be the worst case of cheating in sports history in your memory. Anyone who says different, is kidding themselves or a liar.
The American team had every reason to defy the silver metal that truly belonged to Russia on that very game. In the ceremony after that game, the second place podium was completely vacant.
One of the players said in an interview that if they'd been beaten, he'd have been proud to accept the silver medal; but they were cheated. FIBA's own rules were violated by its own secretary that gave the soviets that last chance.
Bullshit, if u count on the 2nd in-bound u can clearly count,,,,,,1....2.....3....HORN,,,,,,dont care if the idiots reset it properly or not,,,,,doesnt matter CHEATERS<<<<ps on the appel finishing 3-2.....3 judge were cumminsts hahahaha funny no....(ps im nor american,,,nor russian,,,,just sports lover) cunts
Sorry, boys, but if you check the clock closely (at 0:37), it shows :50--it had not been reset to :03 before the ball was inbounded. They were right to redo the play.
Quite frankly, I think the members of Team USA should man up and accept the silver medals. They treat that as the worst moment of those Games--remember, there were athletes KILLED during those Games! Compare that to not getting the gold.
You don't endorse cheating by the IOC, FIBA, and every other anti-American agency by accepting sham medals. I would just as soon put a couple of warheads on FIBA headquarters as I would watch one of their games after this sham.
