Phillip Zarrilli, a professor at the University of Exeter and one of the few Western authorities on kalari payat, estimates that the art dates back to at least the 12th century CE. The historian Elamkulam Kunjan Pillai attributes the birth of kalari payat to an extended period of warfare between the Cheras and the Cholas in the 11th century CE.
In Sangam, Kalari was not used as a martial act according to Dick Luijendijk, a researcher at the university of Nijmegen. "Kalari" is a centre of learning in Kerala. they taught language, math etc. later on, there were fight schools, thats what "payattu kalari" means.
Hey mate ramsen i can tell you that you need to do more research ok because shaoling temple martial art never originated from the south indian guy named bodhidharma. It was originated from kirata mongoloied race of himalaya or nepal and traveled to the india and china.Buddha himself was mongoloied man from nepal not india.Aryans were not inventor of martial art it was kirata mongoloied race of himalaya.
@caorunisa Isn't Kalarippayattu considered closest to the origin of all martial arts? To see that it's still alive and being practiced is amazing to me :)..
This martial art called " Kalari Payattu" is the source for all the other forms of self defence, Budhist monks took it to China and other parts and later under went changes. "Kalari" means the special and sacred place where you learn the various steps and positions." Payattu " means the act of doing it or wielding the equipments,it may be a stic or sword and shield and may be even your hands or legs,BBC made a documentary about it many yeras ago,
You sound like you quite know about Kalari. That video is quite good. But one thing, no Kalari master will practice Marma vidya on living human bodies if he truely knows what Marma is. True Kalari master means not only the person who holds the secret knowledge of fight and healing, but also the person of compassion and peace. Such a master will never practice Marma Vidya especially on his students.. No chance for that.
8th century! So Young ! Kalarippayat and Marma knowledge is even before the Buddhism period ( 5 BC ), much much before the birth of Jesus christ. Many Asian martial arts have very very old traditions, much older than Greek martial arts. Please Study the World History !
Hello ! Thanks for your constant interest in Kalari ! I am very happy that someone likes what is my life passion :) Sorry if I sound argumentative. The pre-arranged movements have not only protection value but it teaches a practitioner some secret knowledge. But I can not tell you further. How to find out the secrets, how to apply it for fight, and healing..... So many things are hidden in each Kalari forms.
You have a very sharp insight ! Yeah many people believe that Kalarippayat is the one Boddhidharma brought to China along with Zen( dyana ) Buddhism. When you go to Shaolin temples, you will see many cave paintings of Chinese monks and dark-skinned monks( probably Indians ), practicing martial arts together. Personally I am sure that Boddhidharma taught Chinese monks Kalarippayat. And later he even went to Japan. Matsushima( name of the city in Japan) is famous for that.
@jesuskopp I don't know how reliable the source was but i think it said a little bit about the belief that the deity Dharma taught Kalarippayattu to the people, but i don't know for sure.
it's not likely, greeks occupied the lands in the north which are not even apart of present day india, in pakistan, and afghanistan, known as bactria. Chandragupta is an indian king who is credited with destroying the macedonian garrisons, ending their occupation.
Kalari is a martial art from the south part of india, in kerala.
check out more kalari videos. you will see what you haven't seen in any other martial art its a promise. its doesn't have flashy moves but its simply fatal. if you will fight with a kalari warrior he will be done way too soon regardless of who you are -- an mma or taek wan do or what ever.
i was fortunate to observe it very closely.....i mean i have said it before but let me tell you its truly fatal. I mean they have not worked on how the moves look like they simply want to take the opponent down. Did you know that most of the kalari masters are also healers? its because the knowledge of vulnerable parts of the body is a must for this art. also check out "marm vidhya" most secret side of kalari.
but let me tell you one truth now a days, you won't find a true marmvidhya expert. But if you wanna get a taste of how marma expert are suppose to be (I don't think any are left.) Watch a movie called "hindustani" by kamal hasan (you can prob. watch it on youtube.) To attain that level of experties in marma, the masters used to practice marma point 8 - 10 hours a day 7 days a week on live students for 8 years (Or so I heard.)

I see kalari as a mother art.
I wonder if they received some of their knowlege from the greeks during their occupation?
jesuskopp 2 years ago
ah I dont think so. Do you have any reason you think like that? Do Greeks have their traditional martial arts?
caorunisa 2 years ago
The Greeks have the most traditional arts of wrestling, boxing, and armed combat.
Our earliest literary sources for Greek athletics can be found in the epic poems o f Homer, The "Iliad and the Odyssey."
This was around the middle of the eighth century!

Very interesting, Many Asian arts are the same way with many hidden elements contained within the forms.
I guess technically Kalari is a Asian Art.
I wonder if this is the art that Bodidarma introduced to the Chinesse monks (please look over the bad spelling)?
