Homosexual activists understand the power of words.
Please visit my channel to watch a one-minute video clip in which popular atheist author Richard Dawkins admits that homosexual activists "hijacked the word 'gay'".
The word "homosexual" is more appropriate and accurate because it, unlike the word "gay", actually describes the behavior/attraction/relationship being discussed.
The word "gay" helps homosexual activists push their agenda.
I love the hurdy gurdy, but really, she could have done a much better job of presenting and championing it. She did seem rushed, so it's possible it might've been a time thing, though. Maybe she was just the preamble to something else. I mean, I doubt all those people filed into that room for less than 6 minutes of hurdy gurdy lecture and music. Still, I'd love to know what, say, Gilles Chabenat would've done in the same 6 minutes.
The drone string(s) can likely be tuned (more/less tension) within a fairly narrow range to change the drone. The key of the melody may merely be a position shift within the range of the keyboard.
I appreciate keeping the instrument alive and all that, but if you're going to get on stage and demand the audience cheer for you to BEGIN playing, you need some notoriety.
Being able to play it before you get on stage would help win the crowd over.
I love how it has the dollar symbol with a strike through it- on the bottom right hand side, just before the nearly 3 Minute elegant commercial by Rolex. Quite oxymoronic.
Hey, its also big in Germany with bands like Subway to Sally, In Extremo, Schandmaul, Corvus Corax etc. together with Bagpipes and E-Guitars it creates awesome medival-rock music wich has a big szene over here! German Name is "Drehleier"
I watched one bloody TedTalksDirector movie about a year ago and it still comes up on my recommended videos to watch without being subscribed it's getting very annoying (and yes this is the only video i've watched since that one a year ago). Go away!
@jimius It's one of those things you either love or hate. I personally love the sound. With respect to familiarity (or lack thereof), I think there are other factors involved - they are prohibitively expensive (not something the average person can just pick up) - and the cheapos (what few there are) sound like absolute crap and fall to pieces rapidly. They tend to be high maintenance instruments (changing cotton, applying rosin, adjusting the trompette), and are very sensitive to humidity...
@xxxFaustusxxx Check out Reincarnatus here on youtube. Not so much metal, but sort of a progressive rock feel featuring gurdys, nyckelharpas, and an assortment of other period instruments...
Personally, I really enjoyed this. I'm not too sure what everyone's complaining about. I've never personally seen a hurdy-gurdy, much less heard one played, so I thought this video was really interesting.
if your going to cherry pick what videos you put up at least pick videos that are about science not fucking a woman pretending she's at a concert. "do you want to hear it?!!" " even they barely said yes.
@ThePsychoReturns - As I understand it, "the dog" refers to a form factor. The buzzing bridge sort of looks like the silhouette of a dog. Not sure which world Caroline Phillips is from or why she was picked for this talk because her knowledge of the instrument was superficial and limited at best. Neil Brook or even Ina Lemm could have produced a far superior talk on the topic (and maybe even won over some of those that called this vid "crap.") :-) Oh well, can't win 'em all.
I think this could have been a fantastic talk, but I'm not sure she was the person to do it. There are some brilliant luthiers who could speak much more articulately on the topic and kicked this up to another level entirely. Oh well, HGs are always interesting...Not sure I like the design of this HG - reminds me of a muffler. But she plays well enough and sings nicely.
Sorry - I LIKE THIS TALK... But did she just say "This has a SSSSELTIC feel"!?!?!?...
That is really annoying.
It is pronounced, quite obviously, as KELTIC... even though it is spelled with a C, if you knew anything about Scandinavian and North West European language it would be really obvious.... Surprised she is taking her pronunciation cues from The Bostons Celtics or Glasgow Celtic (which are both the exceptions which prove the rule).
@Vortex42 What a silly thing to say. I am not allowed to have a personal judgement on something unless I'm 'owed' it?
Am I not allowed to complain about there being too many adverts, or something equally trivial, because I should be eternally thankful that I even get the channel I'm watching it on? Same situation, different sub-context.
Either way, as a fireman I am given very little - money-wise and respect-wise (from some youths, at least), so I like to feel I'm entitled to a good moan. :P

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of this sort of stuff on TED, but I do recognise that it fits the remit to some degree, and whilst it may not blow MY mind, someone creative out there might get some real inspiration from it.
I love the hurdy-gurdy, awesome for music with a medieval feel to it. I've seen it used quite a few times by different musicians here in Sweden. In Swedish it's called vevlira :)
@TodayInMyWorld It was about the T the E and the D in TED... It's a technological marvel, as it was designed and made very fart back in European history, and even today is an innovative instrument. It's used for entertainment, and the songs she played did entertain. And the thing is designed beautifully. Over all, it encompasses everything TED stands for.
Right all you moaners just get lost and watch something else. When you consider the entire content of the web and it's quality, this is somewhere near the top for culture and variety.
