  • Good Video!!!

  • good video, I like this ^__^

  • it's pronounced keltic not seltic

  • @withoutnameorplace In french it's pronounced Seltic, so it's an error french speaker are often making.

  • Your videos are the best

  • i NEED to know who makes these hurdy gurdies. They look absolutely nice... Not traditional at all, but really interesting...

  • She said Selltic lol.

  • Now from the makers of Guitar hero and Rock band and only available on Playstation Network, Hurdy-Gurdy Hero. (controllers start at 1200$)

  • That is one of the most beautiful hurdy gurdies that I've seen. Anyone know who the maker of that hurdy gurdy is?

  • In italian is not "Gironda" but "GHIRONDA" ... the "GH" has hard and NOT soft pronunciation..

  • she forgot to say it was also an dutch and german instrument in mediaeval times.

  • This is great! I'd never seen or heard of that instrument.

  • in italy: ghironda not gironda xD

  • BEAUTIFUL instrument. I wonder how much it cost...

  • @homsar456 2-5k USD

  • I love the hurdy gurdy, but really, she could have done a much better job of presenting and championing it. She did seem rushed, so it's possible it might've been a time thing, though. Maybe she was just the preamble to something else. I mean, I doubt all those people filed into that room for less than 6 minutes of hurdy gurdy lecture and music. Still, I'd love to know what, say, Gilles Chabenat would've done in the same 6 minutes.

  • Sorry, but I cant find any appeal in instruments/music that come with drone strings or pipes. Just too monotonous for me.

  • This is the muppet show chef's favorite instrument

  • chris crocker os sitting up frount

  • sounds awful sorry.

  • lol more like the Hurrdy Durrdy amirite?

  • Bask women are hot. They will kick your butt though

    kewl video.

  • the music for the first half of the rolex commercial is like a tim burton soundtrack

  • This instrument does have aesthetic appeal and cultural value, but don't go pretending it's a good practical instrument. It is pretty cool though.

  • Does it only play in C? Like anyone would know... ; )

  • @jay81rd I think capos can be used as a way to do play in other keys. Not familiar with how they work, but I read it somewhere...

  • @jay81rd

The drone string(s) can likely be tuned (more/less tension) within a fairly narrow range to change the drone. The key of the melody may merely be a position shift within the range of the keyboard.

  • The instrument sounds like someone is playing a reverse satanic message ^^

  • folklore great sound!

  • Sweet, I want one of those! Very interesting looking instrument.

  • I appreciate keeping the instrument alive and all that, but if you're going to get on stage and demand the audience cheer for you to BEGIN playing, you need some notoriety.

Being able to play it before you get on stage would help win the crowd over.

  • nice 3 minute rolex stuff :)

  • pretty cool stuff. Makes me wonder where I could get one and start to learn to play.

  • i like the drone... but keys like a piano... no they are like a hurdy-gurdy

  • Weird instrument

  • Oh gawd, IT'S KEITH COURAGE IN ALPHA ZONES!

  • useless talk.

  • my dog sounds like a fucking robot

  • *YOU* sound like a barking dog !

  • Awesome i want one.

  • he looks like phuyol defender from spain football team....

  • that basque song starts off so haunting

  • Now I understand why I've never heard one of these.

  • interesting :)

  • i want one

  • 5:00 - Man with absolutely no sense of rhythm starts clapping completely out of tune.

  • @tcorp fyi you can't clap out of tune, just out of time...no offence or anything. The word tune refers to sound pitches

  • @Solis1112 *facepalm*

  • @tcorp uhhh...of course it's out of tune, it's fucking clapping. you try and tune a clap.

  • I love how it has the dollar symbol with a strike through it- on the bottom right hand side, just before the nearly 3 Minute elegant commercial by Rolex. Quite oxymoronic.

  • i'd love to hear the "metal" version

  • need more cowbell ! (j/k)

  • Put this in some videogame and it will be popular. IT WILL BE. LOL!

  • I love this instrument! The sound stirs my blood. Reminds me a bit of bagpipes. Love love love!

  • Motorize that bitch!!!

  • Hey, its also big in Germany with bands like Subway to Sally, In Extremo, Schandmaul, Corvus Corax etc. together with Bagpipes and E-Guitars it creates awesome medival-rock music wich has a big szene over here! German Name is "Drehleier"

  • fucking kill it with fire!

  • Hurdy Gurdy,

    Funny word(s)

  • I watched one bloody TedTalksDirector movie about a year ago and it still comes up on my recommended videos to watch without being subscribed it's getting very annoying (and yes this is the only video i've watched since that one a year ago). Go away!

  • @PocusUK lol you've made it worse now by watching this

  • @SobaniForce I know!! lol :)

  • omg what a horrid instrument >.>

  • @TheGenghisKhunt The Hurdy Gurdy doesn't sound too bad, though. :)

    Kidding..kidding. :)

  • Interresting device, but it sounds very unpleasant. Guess that's why it's such an unknown instrument despite it's terrific appearance.

  • @jimius It's one of those things you either love or hate. I personally love the sound. With respect to familiarity (or lack thereof), I think there are other factors involved - they are prohibitively expensive (not something the average person can just pick up) - and the cheapos (what few there are) sound like absolute crap and fall to pieces rapidly. They tend to be high maintenance instruments (changing cotton, applying rosin, adjusting the trompette), and are very sensitive to humidity...

  • @xxxFaustusxxx Check out Reincarnatus here on youtube. Not so much metal, but sort of a progressive rock feel featuring gurdys, nyckelharpas, and an assortment of other period instruments...

  • She pronounced Celt as 'selt'! Ouch!

  • Hurdy Gurdy Hero!!!

  • @IH8WRONGPPL ahahahah YEAH!

  • I love her voice. I always was intrigued by the instrument. It's nice to see something like this. Makes me want one now!

  • Personally, I really enjoyed this. I'm not too sure what everyone's complaining about. I've never personally seen a hurdy-gurdy, much less heard one played, so I thought this video was really interesting.

  • 4:57 bald guy... look at me i'm clapping my own special way! what an ass...

  • @carvin160 The nerve of some people, huh? What an ass.

  • @carvin160 5:17 doesnt last long does he?

  • I know I'm the bad guy, but it sounds extra silly when Americans say "hurdy gurdy"

  • I think this is interesting. I want to play one

  • wtf is this?

  • meh, I couldn't get the rhythm of the song she sang and it felt like there were plenty of mistakes. Did not like. Instrument is still interesting.

  • if your going to cherry pick what videos you put up at least pick videos that are about science not fucking a woman pretending she's at a concert. "do you want to hear it?!!" " even they barely said yes.

  • I loved it!

  • Hurdy gurdy turns up in the most unlikely places. For example, a Metallica song: Low Man's Lyric, from the album ReLoad.

  • I don't get what everyone's so upset about. I just learned something new. Fantastic! AND it didn't involve Jersey Shore

  • Shure SM58 FTW!

  • The Rolex ad was better...

  • Look up the song "Hurdy Gurdy Man"

  • That was very random rofl

    informative, but random!

  • what an annoying instrument :)

  • I know the word "hurdy-gurdy" solely because it was the name of a ringtone on my first cellphone. Nokia 3110.

  • I need one of those.

  • just play it

  • I think it's kind of cool

  • She needs to learn to play "I Gotta Feeling"

  • Audience looks bored... lol

  • Someone needs to invent the electric Hurdy-gurdy.

  • @zarkoff45 Haha, that's what i was thinking during the vid but then i saw a cable already coming from the instrument :O

  • The Basque 'country' where she lives, in the 'region' of France and Spain. Not a small dig for Basque nationalism there. ;-)

  • has anyone ever made an instrument called a HERP DERP ?

  • @roidroid HURDY HURRR DURRR. I only Hurr after I Derp

  • wonderful!

  • @ThePsychoReturns Hahaha omg nothing's real.

  • @ThePsychoReturns - As I understand it, "the dog" refers to a form factor. The buzzing bridge sort of looks like the silhouette of a dog. Not sure which world Caroline Phillips is from or why she was picked for this talk because her knowledge of the instrument was superficial and limited at best. Neil Brook or even Ina Lemm could have produced a far superior talk on the topic (and maybe even won over some of those that called this vid "crap.") :-) Oh well, can't win 'em all.

  • @ThePsychoReturns This chick's fuckin nuts if she thinks dogs bark like that

  • .... and i thought bagpipes were annoying!

  • I just like how much shes into it,

Hurdy gurdy. . . sounds like something you wanna get a room to do. . .nudge nudge wink wink

    Liked her singing

  • was advert longer then the TEDTalk - Performance?

  • I think this could have been a fantastic talk, but I'm not sure she was the person to do it. There are some brilliant luthiers who could speak much more articulately on the topic and kicked this up to another level entirely. Oh well, HGs are always interesting...Not sure I like the design of this HG - reminds me of a muffler. But she plays well enough and sings nicely.

  • UK france italy and spain

So it's not popular in germany? good I have never heard of this instrument oO

  • Generally I don't care much for the "Entertainment" part of TED, but that one was really cool, and informative.

  • would totally have that chick at my party

  • Nice voice... when she isn't speaking! ;o)

  • Sorry - I LIKE THIS TALK... But did she just say "This has a SSSSELTIC feel"!?!?!?...

    That is really annoying.

It is pronounced, quite obviously, as KELTIC... even though it is spelled with a C, if you knew anything about Scandinavian and North West European language it would be really obvious.... Surprised she is taking her pronunciation cues from The Bostons Celtics or Glasgow Celtic (which are both the exceptions which prove the rule).

  • Comment removed

  • I want a rolex :)

  • Right, there's no entertainment, design or technology involved in music or musical instruments. Geez, not sure what all the cry-babying is about.

Anyway, what kind of HG is that? Certainly not a traditional design...

  • This was great... when her ego wasn't getting in the way.

  • It must have look like magic to people of a 1000 yeas ago.

  • Probably my most favorite instrument besides a Nycleharpa

  • The "Basque Country" IS in Spain. Not between Spain and France. Guessing she's an ETA supporter?

  • @andresico2 : Is that a bad thing?

  • @Vortex42 well considering ETA is a terrorist organization, then yes I'd consider that a bad thing.

  • @andresico2 : Some of the people claiming to be ETA conduct abhorrent activities, but ETA themselves are simply freedom fighters.

  • More crap from TED... I remember when they put out fascinating and really fucking intriguing videos, but now they're just this sort of stuff...

Fine, put something out like this once in a while, but it has been about 4 or 5 weeks since an interesting new TED release... And counting.

  • @tomroutledge : As Louis CK, might say... How quickly the World OWES you something. Get a GRIP!!!

  • @Vortex42 What a silly thing to say. I am not allowed to have a personal judgement on something unless I'm 'owed' it?

Am I not allowed to complain about there being too many adverts, or something equally trivial, because I should be eternally thankful that I even get the channel I'm watching it on? Same situation, different sub-context.

Either way, as a fireman I am given very little - money-wise and respect-wise (from some youths, at least), so I like to feel I'm entitled to a good moan. :P

  • @tomroutledge : Well, seeing as you are a fireman, fair enough. You've no doubt earned a right to moan about things. Here's to Firemen!!!

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of this sort of stuff on TED, but I do recognise that it fits the remit to some degree, and whilst it may not blow MY mind, someone creative out there might get some real inspiration from it.

  • @Vortex42 Indeed, that is a fair point.

I think I was just frustrated at the time I watched this.

  • The Tromba Marina has a similar buzzing bridge.

  • TED - Technology Entertainment Design... well this is the entertainment part so if you only want technology and design just watch those videos.

  • We sell these!!!

  • It is me or is she kinda sexy? Probably because of what she is doing?

  • It is me or is she kinda sexy?

  • I love the hurdy-gurdy, awesome for music with a medieval feel to it. I've seen it used quite a few times by different musicians here in Sweden. In Swedish it's called vevlira :)

  • Thumbs up is you think TED TALK has changed!! it used to be really good! and now....!!!

  • My god. I own that shirt.

  • That is an awesome instrument, I have never seen that instrument before.

  • In my experience, an instrument sounds so much more beautiful when I know how it works. Thank you TEDtalks!

  • What a lame-ass thing.

  • Always refreshing. Thanks.

  • I don't care about the E in TED. It should just be TD talks.

  • @devourerofbabies Nobody made you listen to it. Quitcherbitchen and use the back button.

  • Has a kinda techno sound to it lol

  • Popular consensus: Nobody gives a fuck about Hurdy Gurdys. I always wondered what one looked like though.

  • sorry I fell asleep while watching this...can someone tell me what this pivotal TED talk was about?

  • @TodayInMyWorld It was about the T the E and the D in TED... It's a technological marvel, as it was designed and made very fart back in European history, and even today is an innovative instrument. It's used for entertainment, and the songs she played did entertain. And the thing is designed beautifully. Over all, it encompasses everything TED stands for.

  • Hans Wildorf!!!!!

  • the crowd sounds like they're hating this...

  • Right all you moaners just get lost and watch something else. When you consider the entire content of the web and it's quality, this is somewhere near the top for culture and variety. It's something I can show my 5 years old son, and quite frankly, sometimes it's a lot harder to find a wide cultural/musical and educational content on this world wide web than it should be.

  • can it play heavy metal????????

  • @frilink yes

  • No offense but do we really need a 3 minute commercial breakdown of a Rolex watch at the end? I know TED needs to pay the bills but 33% of the talk is now taken up by commercial... for a watch at that...

  • @bigshel99

You are free to skip it , so i see no reason to complain.

  • @ragnarocks0 You were also free to skip my comment but decided to comment... Same difference.

  • :) fab!

  • Jeez hurdy-gurdy? Seriously how lame can you call such a beautifull instrument! If you also like it, check out Żywiołak, an amazing Polish band ;).

  • Isn't ted supposed to be about ideas?

  • @Silhouette93 ted = technology entertainment design

  • like a bag-pipe accordion! very cool but...TED YOU CAN DO BETTER.

  • I love me a good Hurdy Gurdy. They are used a lot in viking music too.

  • Tbh, the rolex commercial at the end was better than the tedtalk itself, anyone agrees?

  • Am I the only one who thinks she should've played the Rocky theme?

  • This is amazing! I want one!

Also, fuck da haters. Hurdy Gurdy for life.

  • All you detractors must not be musicians. This is very interesting. I'm sure this instrument is very difficult to play and you have to give kudos to those who can play it!

It also takes me way back to my [much] younger years when The Hurdy-Gurdy Man by Donovan was a hit. Look it up.

If you don't like or are not interested in a certain subject covered on TED, don't watch it. It's simple. No need to complain about it.

  • @ranhawes I hope it was as hard to play as it was to listen to

  • This is all nice and shit.. but this ain't what i subscribed to!

  • @GooDpropeller

You say that as if being subscribed to this channel wasn't completely free, and as if this wasn't a TED Talk.

  • @Chimerathon And what, everything surrounds about money? If it doesn't cost anything well then it must be free! No, I had put my time and energy on this so this wasn't for "free" and it sure wasn't a TED talk, just some kind of TED "song".
