Weird comment, Prince...IF the camera could see him, so could the people with guns shooting at him.
I recall this day. Everyone with a gun and in the area took positions and shot at him, and he shot back. He even killed a man that was looking through a small opening.
This is not a movie, it's real life...sorry to have disappointed you.
PrincalKendrick, I'm not sure you knew this or not one of the victims, Paul Sontag-Paul's grandfather was a personal friend of President & Mrs. Johnson. The First Couple, like so many americans at that time, were besides themselves with grief. I think LBJ was the 1st US President to advocate for gun control based on this event
I did a little digging and I discovered that some really big and prominent doctors took a real good look at his tumor and concluded that he was predisposed to getting it, and that it was going to kill him, no matter what. They said he was going to die young wether or not he went on a rampage. And they were certain that it had an effect on his behavior. They also marveled at how very thin his skull was. I, as well as the victims, see him as an evil animal that was disguised as a human. So evil.
At 4:07 when he shoots out of the little hole, you can see him moving. Spooky and eerie, makes my hair stand on end. I remember watching this on live tv, in another state, now I live down Congress Ave., off Oltorf, and So. 1st Street., You can almost see the Tower from where I live.
Like Denzel Washington's line @ the end of Training Day when he said "What a day! What a muthuf**kin' day!" I don't give a damn if he had a brain tumor or not, that crazy ass NEEDED to be killed. He was evil. If you can kill your own mama then you need to be put down. He was pretty good with a weapon and he had pin-point control over where he wanted to place rounds, but he was a snake son of a bitch to purposely shoot a pregnant woman. She was his1st sniping target. May they all RIP except him.
@lwm762 He did have a tumor but everybody has argued since how much impact it had. Personally I don't think it had any impact at all. Some drs. say it was in the wrong part of the brain, for it to have a impact. Charlie was just a mean little bastard, that wanted to commit police assisted suicide and wanted to drag down as many as he could with him. He had to have known he wasn't coming down alive. He not only murdered his mom but his wife as well, the night before. He killed her in her sleep.
When police and citizens became aware of Whitman's position, they returned fire with rifles. In those days it was not uncommon to see a hunting rifle on a rack in the rear window of a rancher's pickup. Under fire, Whitman used the drain spouts on the walls of the observation deck as shooting portals. During the final assault on the deck, Martinez and McCoy had to crouch below the walls to avoid gunfire coming over the walls and risk being shot by rounds coming through the drain openings.
I believe that by this time (12:30 P.M. CDT; 1:30 P.M. EDT, KLRN's coverage was being fed to and rebroadcast on all three commercial networks. I remember seeing live coverage of this, although I lived (and still do) in New England.
You can see him in the middle hole at 3:50 then shoot in the left hole at 4:04. Charles Whitman killed his wife, mother, a family in the tower and an employee. Also everyone he shot on the ground, his first shot took two lives, with a bullet through a pregnant womans stomach. If you want to read more i suggest the book A Sniper in the Tower the story of Charles Whitman.
FYI. Those "holes" are actually rain spouts. Notice the U-shaped ledge or lip protruding from under each rain spout? And they are larger than the dollar bill somebody stated. That outside wall is 4' tall, so the holes are roughly 1' tall.
I read a bio about Charles a while back, it was pretty good. Explained his life growing up in the scouts and was an ace with a bb gun. Then moving on to the marine corps and marrying his wife. It's so sad he killed his wife and mother before doing this, and the lady in side of the office there, plus some people running up to help her. The bio was a great read though, for reading about a serial killer. How scary this must of been for the people down there.
@primeribs1 yes A mass murder will kill large groups of people at the SAME time. Examples of mass murders: Columbine High School Massacre, Virginia Tech Massacre and the Amish School Shooting. Mass murderers unlike serial killers, rarely have a sexual motive for their killings.
A serial killer will kill, experience a cool down period, and sometime later (days, weeks, months) kill again
Whitman loved amphetamines, which enabled him to become a super-sniper. these videos make it seem as if he's in 3 places simultaneously...is it because of the police and citizens returning fire on the deck??
Does anyone know of a color copy?? Just wondering..
This may sound like an obvious question but is all that chatter we hear the KLRN staff or the police or whoever's out there dealing with the situation?
I think the only moment when you can actually see Whitman move was around 3:50. Look at the middle window, something white seems to rush by. The next shot comes from the window to the left only seconds later. - It´s creepy. It´s said that Whitman was in psychiatric counselling because he felt his aggression got out of control. In his "suicide" note he suggested his brain to be subject to further scientific examination, then he killed his mother and wife, starting the spree kill.
the funny thing is if it werent whitman on the tower, whitman may had been one of the people who grabbed a gun from home and shot at the tower. then he would have been a hero, its like in the movie "taxi driver" :D
ok... at 3:47-48 you can see him move from the Right hole and then at 3:49-50. you can see his white headband move across the middle. Hes moving from the right over to the left
He had many guns, including a sawed off shot gun. However, he used a high powered rifle for the sniping and he used the shot gun to kill the people inside the tower.
I recently responded to a person who wrote that only 14 people had died. My response was of being sarcastic to that question when I said "only 14?". Seems to me the only time that gets people notice is when the killing is at a much larger scale; hence my reply 'only 14?' It seems a pity but it seems to be true.I guess I was not making myself clear.
Charles Whitman had several firearms with him that day. Most people were killed with a Springfield M1-A, a semi automatic version of the M-14. It fires the .308 Winchester round which has an effective range of approximatly 1000 yards.
They did. But the helicopter vibrated and moved arount too much for the sharpshooter to get a decent shot. Whitmans shot at the helicopter about 17 or so times and then the helicopter was instructed to back off a little so that it would be at a safer distance but at the same time appear threatening.
For history buffs like me, i love to see live footage of turning points in American. This is pretty good footage. Just wished you seen more of him instead of the clock just moving. Thanks for finding this video though.
@PrinceKendrick I completely agree. Still, it's so fascinating to watch actual footage taken during the shooting. I wish there were more information on Whitman himself. We hear constantly these anyalizations of Columbine shooters or Timothy McVeigh, yet Whitman seems so much more interesting since there was not only was there no real motivation for him to do it, but since what he did was unprecedented.
His name was David Gunby; he died on November 7, 2001after living for 35 years on weekly dialysis treatments due to injuries suffered in the sniper shootings. He voluntarily decided to discontinue treatment and died a week later, and the Tarrant County coroner listed the cause of death as "homicide", making him Whitman's final victim.
I just typed up the KLRN website and looking through their station history section their original studios on the cmapus of the UT. I know the annoucer doesn't say that exactly but that's what I read on the site.
At about 2:05 you can see movement in the left hole, then the middle, then the right one. Looks like he running or walking toward the right side of the tower. Then about 10-15 seconds later smoke appears from the left side of the tower....
In the account of this event on Wikipedia, it states that Charles Whitman met some tourists on the observation deck shortly after he arrived there with his bag of weapons. Mark Gabour and his aunt Marguerite Lamport died almost instantly; Michael and his mother, Mary, were permanently disabled.
fascinating piece of Texas history & thanks for posting! JFK 'grassy knoll' researchers that argue modern firearms do not emit smoke should see this coverage. I believe Whitman had an M-1, sawed-off shotgun, Remington 700 and several handguns, one of which makes the smoke drifting up across the clock
Tedbundy. LOL. Great name. You are just so tough and so cool. So smart, so REAL. So in touch with the horrible reality of human life. You are special, and different too.
Also, I enjoy it because 1. it doesnt happen everyday 2. Its historical 3. I have a sick fascination with watching fate. My mom likes this stuff for the exact OPPOSITE of why people like you like it. THE HEROES THAT STOPPED HIM.
Yes, I was a kid living in Austin at the time, and this left an indelible mark on me. Mom and we kids were concerned for our father who worked in a jewelry store south of the Capital building.
