I love this level music, I think the (first) best part of this theme is at 0:26 (till 0: 41 and over). It amazes me still how artists and programmers created this great music with so little to work with. I think it has something to do with the enormous pressure the people worked under in those times. It clearly states with 5 channels you can create great music!

It's so strange how old games like this using cartridge sounds had such classic themes. I mean, I'm sure nostalgia plays a bit in that, but this shit is worlds better than most of the stuff you find in games these days. I don't care if you've never played Sonic before.

Chrono Trigger is another one that had an unreal soundtrack for a cartridge, but the Sonic games will always occupy a special place in my heart. Especially this theme, Death Egg, Carnival Night from S3 and Metropolis from S2.

@dragondisaster no, actually the old consoles had a limited number of sound channels meaning the composer had to employ very clever part writing often based on baroque contrapuntal principles in order to produce a piece of sufficient interest. essentially a more sophisticated knowledge of composition was mandatory to create great music with four parts, you couldn't just write some garbage, have an orchestra record it and slap it in the game for automatic 'high quality music'
