Check out the Wikipedia article on them for the story of what happened and why.
While they are best known for their originality, outrageousness, and live productions, musically they are great in my opinion. The band had a lot of excellent musicians, just not household names.
I had the great, good fortune to see them in performance on their WDYWFL tour. There is a great, accurate video here on YouTube of a live performance of "White Punks On Dope", but not "WDYWFL ". What a shame. :-(
talk to ya later -one of the best tunes from the great 80's - fantastic guitar solo at the end. tremendous vocals back then -- maybe not so much now*---but still I love them and have fond memories ofthat time.
I remember a record review of later "MTV" Tubes and started with.. Are this the same people that did White Punks ? obvious they went comercial...from great to ok.
i saw them last week in Lisboa, It was Nice, Very Nice. One of my favorite LP is "What do you want from Live" and the show just started with Overture, She's a Beauty, White Punks on Dupe, Mondo Bandage and so on. At the End Talk to ya later. It Was Amazing. They perform with Foreigner, Madness and Silicon/carbon.
buncha da,seen them in 1980 cleveland.the props & attire made madonna look like a falling star. too bad cbs is sitting on all that film. also they had a better sound voicewise.
The Tubes were staple of my youth. What's that say about me?? Saw them 16 x's and appreciated the variety of content and the humor they brought to their performances. As much as I like Todd Rundgren, after he produced their TV album they started heading downhill.
I wil always remember "Cowboy Fee and the Hefers dream" . Their alternate name when they didn't want people to know who they were. Funny as hell.
I have seen this song done live twice now, and one thing remains the same- Fee Waybill is still an egotistical ass.
I met everyone in the current line-up, and some of them agreed that I should have a shot at being included- Fee, on the other hand, seems to think he IS the Tubes.
I was fortunate enough to witness the Tubes live on the "What Do You Want From Live" tour at the Warner Theater in Washington D.C., must have been around '76 or '77. Have seen them a half a dozen times since then... but there has never been a show like the first. Good to see they're still sharing their talent.
Man I'd love to see a video of the drum solo from "What Do You Want from Live". I got that album in '79 and turned a ton of people in Austin onto The Tubes back then.
It was 1983 during the Outside Inside tour that i first saw The Tubes in concert at the E.M. Lowes Theatre in Worcester, MA.I was treated to a show of sights and sounds that I would remember for the rest of my life.Saw them many times from 83 to 86 and again in 91.I took my Son (Sushichef871) to this show and he loved it. I'm sure he will remember it for the rest of his life too.
If you hear of The Tubes playing at a venue near you , check them out
Captinfingers...I was at that show at E.M. Lowes too in 83. My buddy and I got to go into the dressing room after the show and meet the the Tubes. They were all bummed out, especially Fee, as the tour wasn't going as well as they expected.
That show was great, though! Wasn't Tod Rundgren's Utopia the other band?
guitartec , Todd Rundgren's Utopia was the opening band during the Love Bomb Tour 85\86? and they did play E M Loews and you are right about that tour not going well.I saw that show 3 times 1.Providence . 2.E.M. Loews , 3. Hampton Beach . i guess it was the begining of tubeulent times for the band .
At the Bull Run Fee mentioned that there was talk about getting the remaining original members of the band back together for the 2008 tour that would include the full stage show
Thaaaaat's right. I saw them once again in the mid-80's with Utopia during the LB tour. Wow, what memories. What a show! What musicians.
I think what REALLY killed the Tubes chances for being taken seriously was the video they did of Sports Fans, where Fee comes out completely nude, floppin' his junk around. The video was pulled, but it was too late. The damage was done. Sort of a Burt Renyolds/Playgirl thing, if you remember that??? It was actually hilarious
The Tubes were going down the career fast pipe at the time and about half way through their set after opening for Utopia, they started insulting the few remaining members of the audience who stuck around after Todd left the stage.
The Tubes will never die
