Everyone knew, including Nader, how close the election 2000 election was going to be. Nader also knew he was going to pull a relatively large percentage.

Instead of conceding to pass a good majority (2/3 Nader supporters were Gore supporters second) of his votes to Gore he kept running. What happened? Bush won by the margin of error.

You say that he pulled a relatively large percentage (of the votes I suppose). If you look at the votes in Florida in 2000 essentially any of the 3rd party candidates had the votes that could have swayed it towards Gore, not just Nader. This demonstrates how Nader is a scapegoat. I don't understand how people can blame someone else for another person failing. That is like a sports team blaming its fans for its loss because they didn't cheer enough... no I believe it was the team failing

1. his campaign, maybe he lost because he didn't do a could job. You get a bad grade on a test because of your performance not because your room mate was watching tv.

2. corruption, there was blatant corruption in this case that was disregarded and if taken into consideration could have helped Gore... like the disenfranchised African American vote.

What would it take to open the debates and mandate instant run-off elections? Without debate participation, 3rd parties are toast. Without instant run-off elections voters fear 2 party spoilage. Entrenched political and corporate power does not benefit from such enhancements and would only lose the duopolistic power they have so carefully engineered by forming the bi-partisan CPD corporation, with its 15% polling requirement and by inciting fear with their spoiler accusations in '00.
